INSIDE THE BIRD’S NEST Issue 1 Sport Cave Hill (SCH) @SCH_Blackbirds Inside the BIRD’S NEST ONE FLIES, ALL SOAR IN THIS ISSUE Hockey (Feb 20) In the female category, the women were narrowly bumped out of a Scrimfest Hockey finals spot, losing to Combermere School Old Scholars in a sudden death penalty shootout. The girls held the opposition to a 11 tie at the end of regulation before bowing out. The men suffered the same fate being outplayed 83 by eventual tournament winners ‘Cool Runnings’. Both teams finished 4 th . Despite this however, the UWI Blackbirds Hockey Club in conjunction with the Academy of Sport Cave Hill hosted a successful tournament. Women’s Basketball (Feb 24) The Blackbirds were victorious in their season opener, trouncing the Tigers 6846. Sade Clarke top scored with 25 points while Toni Atherley chipped in with 16. (Feb 26) The girls made it two consecutive wins, thrashing Challengers 6923. Toni Atherley got the team off to a flying start, netting 12 of the team’s 25 points in the first quarter. Tennis (Feb 16 & 23) The tennis team had a rough start to their 2013 Barbados Tennis Association Interclub campaign, going down to both Yacht Club and Tennis Centre in their first two ties. In the first, the Blackbirds were outplayed by the Yacht Club, with a final score of 4928. In the second, the team had a better showing against Tennis Centre finishing with 4 victories, 1 more than their opponent. However, unfortunately for the Blackbirds, the winner of a tie is judged based on the total number of games garnered throughout the entire tie. The Blackbirds lost 3833. UWI Games 2013 The Academy of Sport Cave Hill’s sports programme got off to an intensive start this semester, as the Cave Hill Blackbirds prepare for the 2013 UWI Games. May 2130 will see a contingent of 150 head off to Jamaica, where the Blackbirds will defend their title in the 10 sporting disciplines.
