The ladies copped the award for best dressed team. Track & Field (March 22 & 23) A small Blackbirds Track & Field contingent flew to the land of reggae, where they participated in the UWI Mona Track & Field Invitational. Jermain Hinds, Raphael Jordan, John Phillips and Kirk Austin all gave creditable performances, while competing in a field of experienced athletes from renowned track clubs. Track clubs at the meet included UTech, UWI Mona, UWI St. Augustine, and Mobay Comets amongst others. Hinds and Jordan finished 17 th and 28 th respectively in the Men’s 100m, out of a field of 37 athletes, with times of 11.13 and 11.58. Hinds was back in action again in the 200m, and although not finishing on the podium, was 9 th in the finals with a time of 22.84. Not to be kept off the podium entirely, the Blackbirds secured some hardware in the men’s long and high jump competitions. Phillips topped his competitors with a height of 2.00m to secure gold, while Austin finished 3 rd with his effort of 7.31m in the long jump. Jordan finished 14 th out of field of 19 in the long jump with a leap of 6.22m and 6 th out of 10 in triple jump with a 13.61m effort. Hockey (March 22 & 23) Heated hockey action flicked off at Trents on the weekend, in a 9aside mixed hockey grass competition. Banks International Hockey Competition’s 2012 Mixed Champs title holders, the UWI Blackbirds, were the tournament favourites, but were unable to claim top spot this time around. The team had an outstanding run in the preliminary round but failed to secure three important points which would have propelled them into the finals, resulting in a 3 rd place finish. A good showing by the team,, just a few months before they seek to defend their title at Banks 2013. Hockey Cont’d (March 28) The UWI Blackbirds had a  rough time  at  the  BHF  Indoor  Competition which was  staged  at  the  Sir  Garfield  Sobers Gymnasium.  The  men  were  outplayed  in their  preliminary  round matches,  while  the women could only manage one victory. A 4‐0 thrashing  of  Banks  by  the  women  was  the only  consolation  for  the  club  team,  as both teams bowed out of  the  competition  in  the preliminary stage.

Men’s Football

(March  18)  Division  1:  The  Blackbirds remained undefeated  in the season thus far, playing  to  a  1‐1  draw  against  Benfica.  The guys  failed  to  capitalise  on  early opportunities and paid for this in the last play of  the  first  half,  when  Benfica  took advantage  of  a  defensive  error.  Not  to  be outplayed,  the  Blackbirds  fought  back, beating  the  opposing  goalkeeper  with  a stunning  strike  on  the  volley  by  Dean Bradshaw to share the points.   (March  20) Division  2:  The men  dominated possession in first half action against Dayrells Road  and drew  first blood, when Brad Taitt made the most of a one on one opportunity with the goalkeeper, before half time.  In the second  half  however, momentum  swung  to the opposition. With Ricardo ‘Inches’ Spencer lost to injury and Taitt substituted during the break,  the  Blackbirds’  attacking  force  was weakened.  Dayrell’s  Road  subsequently converted  a  penalty,  and  capitalized  on  a defensive blunder to walk away with the full three points.

(March  22) Division  1:  In  a  top  of  the  table clash,  the  Cave  Hill  Blackbirds  could  only manage  a  draw  when  they  took  on  Parish Land in Christ Church.  Playing on an uneven surface,  the  men  had  a  tough  time maintaining  possession  of  the  ball.  Parish Land  fared  better  in  the  first  half,  in  home conditions, capitalizing in attack to take a 1‐0 lead  before  the  break.  Not  to  leave  empty handed, the Blackbirds  increased pressure  in the  second  half  and  equalized  10  minutes before the end of regulation time. Kyle Smith slotted home  for Cave Hill  from close  range from a corner kick.  (March  25)  Division  1:  In  a  tough  post‐Kaduwival  encounter  against  Pinelands,  the UWI  Blackbirds  dropped  to  second  position in  the standings, after being edged 1‐0. The men  conceded  a  goal  in  the  first  half when Pinelands  penetrated  the  Blackbirds’ defense.  As  the  second  half  got  underway, both  teams  were  equally  matched,  but neither hit the target.  (March 27) Division 1: After Maxwell climbed to  the  top  of  the  table,  the  revived  UWI Blackbirds  edged  them  1‐0  in  an  exciting match  up,  rebounding  from  a  loss  in  their previous fixture. Henderson Forde scored the lone goal for the Blackbirds to regain 1

st place

in the standings.  (March  30)  The  UWI  Blackbirds  were defeated  2‐0  in  the  KFC  Knockout Competition,  after Brittons Hill  converted  2 early goals and held on for the win.

Women’s Basketball

(March 30) Blackbirds maintain great form in the  BABA Women’s  competition,  defeating Combined School Hoopsters 63‐59.
