Dear friends:

Spring has come and gone and come and gone again! April showers might bring

May flowers but one thing is certain; spring brings stray cats and litters of kittens!

Our dedicated volunteers are ready and the calls have started coming in. We are

anxious to rescue as many of these precious little furry friends as possible.

Mississauga Humane Society always receives more calls to rescue surrendered or

abandoned cats and kittens. We are proud to report that since January 2012 we

have rescued 135 animals; either as surrenders, strays or from high kill pounds.

The beginning of 2012 has been a busy one for us. In March, the Naughty Nadz Bar

& Restaurant on Dundas St hosted an event, “Comedic Paws” with all proceeds

going to Mississauga Humane Society. There were stand-up comics, a musical

showcase and raffles. It was very successful! For details please go to Page 10.

It is our goal and always has been, to rescue as many animals as our resources will

allow. With the generosity of our monthly donors, annual donors, corporate

sponsors, fundraisers and the many volunteers that dedicate their time, we are

able to reach for the stars – or should I say, the animals!!!

Daisy – a biting dog

or a sleeping dog?

DAISY, a young and sweet dog, just got adopted from a shelter by a loving family. She had

a full life ahead of her, until that fateful day. Daisy was sleeping/laying down on her bed.

The child of the family decided that he would go over and give her a hug. When he started

putting his arm around her, Daisy was startled, she growled and then bit him. Because the

child’s face was closest, she caught his lip; two stitches were required. Daisy was taken

right away to Mississauga Animal Services. Her family decided to give her up as their

child became afraid of the dog. Due to the biting incident, Daisy would be killed after the

quarantine period, per protocol of most shelters. Her owner asked us for help.

It’s difficult to find dogs with a biting record(s) a foster home, let alone an adoptive home.

However, the fact is that many of these biting incidents were provoked due to the

ignorance/lack of supervision of the dog owner. In the case of Daisy, the biting would never

have happened if the child was taught never to disturb a sleeping or eating dog (please

read article Let a Sleeping Dog Lie on page 8)! For most of the biting dogs, all it takes is

the right home that can provide the proper supervision/training. Sadly, many of them were

not given that chance and ended up killed. Since there was a reason for the biting, I really

felt Daisy deserved a SECOND CHANCE. I called the shelter and offered to rescue her.

As a responsible charity, we always give a temperament assessment on these biting dogs

in order to ensure they are not dangerous to the public. In Daisy’s case this is especially

imperative as a child was involved. On the last day of the 10-day quarantine, Dahlia

Ayoub, our dog trainer, went to the animal shelter and assessed Daisy. I was very happy

when Dahlia called and told me Daisy passed the test, but wanted to cry when she asked

another question: Where is she going? Anyway, the papers were signed with Daisy’s

owner for us to take over her dog. Daisy is now ours - another problem dog !!.

Daisy needed to be taken out of the Animal Services shelter right away. With no foster

homes available, boarding was the only option at the time. So, right after getting out of the

quarantine, poor Daisy had to stay in another kennel run, but this time she knew she

would be SAFE in our hands. Besides, I always arrange dog walkers (including myself)

to give our boarding dogs at least a walk daily. Miracles do happen! On the first night of

Daisy’s boarding, Monika Sandhu, one of the volunteers at our Cat Room at the clinic, took

Daisy out for a walk… fell in love with her… and offered to foster her!! Monika was

informed of the biting incident and was very understanding. She took Daisy home the next

day. This was 3 months ago. Last week, Monika told me that her family decided to adopt

Daisy as they could not part with such a loving dog! .

From all these pictures of Daisy being cuddled by every member of her family, we know

she has hit the jackpot! Thanks, Monika and your family, and Dahlia too. Together we

have made a difference in Daisy’s LIFE.

Very soon we will be flooded with nursing moms and kittens.

Is this just another one of those annoying idioms or are we all mistaken? First of, all I would like to break it down into a simpler form. The word lie; as in lounge, laze, stretch out – not as in untruthful, fib, or tall-tale. I mean, how can a sleeping dog lie? Better yet, can a dog lie? I’ll tell you – If I find out that my dog knows where she hid my slippers and is not telling me then maybe I should quit my day job!* Dogs don’t lie – they don’t tell fibs, they can’t talk! The phrase is said to have originated from Geoffrey Chaucer who used a similar phrase in his story, Troilus and Criseyde, published in 1374. “It is nought good a sleepyng hound to wake” Duh…now in layman terms – It is not good if a sleeping dog wakes up. Exactly! But what is the meaning behind this? According to the Collins Dictionary; LET SLEEPING DOGS LIE means “To leave things undisturbed”. Why is it that, after over 600 years, this saying still exists? Maybe because it has taken that long for humans to understand exactly what it means? So here goes my rant: I am a dog trainer. I work with many dogs, good and bad, big and small, ones with homes and ones on death row. I have assessed many dogs and let me tell you, the worry caused by knowing I will be assessing a dog that bit is not something you would want to go through, time after time. So I show up and with a bit of background I check in on the dog, anxiously whining from the slightest motion of attention from me. Quivering - because it is scared to death, sitting in a concrete jail cell in Quarantine with no clue in the world that its life will possibly end in less than 2 weeks. “ “My dog is not aggressive”. “Rover wouldn’t hurt a fly!” I’m sure you can picture the faces of these ignorant people as they explain how docile their dogs are to me when I tell them my story. Now picture this; “It’s my fault! I shouldn’t have done that but I was drunk!”. “It’s my fault! I wasn’t watching the kids and before I knew it…” It’s too late. The dog is taken away, the victim rushed to the hospital and the owner now terrified of their own dog. It’s too late. Cry. Cry for the happy-go-lucky 9 month old puppy that nipped someone in the face for abruptly giving it a bear hug while it slept. Show your anger. Be enraged by the overwhelming feeling of a 10 year old senior that lived its whole life with its family in a comfortable home, only to be straddled by a child that leaned on its sore back while it dreamt. It now lies on a cold, hard cement floor. Its joints ache but nobody is able to give it any comfort because most dogs that end up in quarantine are not allowed to even be walked, let alone touched because of the liability that they will bite again. Remember, they are deemed dangerous.

Look at your dog. See that tail wag? Yeees, Oh! Oh! Now it’s a full body wag! He loves you! Now don’t call him over, he has already gotten up and is leaning against you thinking he is going for a walk. Hug him. Go ahead! Hug him tight! Now promise him that you will never attempt to disturb him in his sleep. After your snuggle session and take as long as you like, make it a point to tell the next 10 people you come into contact with that own a dog what you just read. Ask them if they love their dog. Tell them my story. Thank them on behalf of all who help animals. Thank them because they care. Most of all thank them because they just saved a life!

FUND RAISER When Richelle Camara, one of our

adopters, heard about our shortage of

funds, she decided to do something to

help. She hosted a BAKE SALE at

her workplace.

“Well, I wanted to give money but we

just adopted a dog & renovated our

Kitchen so funds are tight. I love

baking so I told my girlfriend that I was

going to bake & sell them at work to

raise funds for the animals. She

said she wanted to bake, then she told

her mom, so her mom did too, then I

told a co-worker & he wanted to bake

too. We made cinnamon buns, fruit

loafs cookies rice crispy squares,

cornflake rolls. I emailed people at

my workplace. By 2 pm everything

was gone!

We raised $300 all together! I

couldn't believe the success! People

want me to do this more often so I will.

I am so happy that we could help! I

would like to do it every 3

months….”

MHS IN the CLASSROOM

MHS is now helping our community even more as it started its involvement with school education! As part of our Term 2 Learning Journey (a grade-wide, term-long project), students of the Erin Centre Middle School are investigating how

to become better global citizens under the guiding question: What is the best way to bring about positive social change? As a component of this a Charity Fair

was organised to expose all grade 8 students to some of the exemplary organizations in the GTA that are effectively creating such positive change. The goal was for the

students to have the opportunity to talk with representatives from each charity and ask them - what makes an effective charity?

MHS was invited to participate in the Fair. which took place on March 26, 2012. Thanks to Lily Chan, Director, who gave presentation to 8 classes of students in one morning!

x Comedic Paws, another fun-filled event benefitting Mississauga Humane Society, was

held on the night of Friday, March 30 at the NAUGHTY NADZ BAR & RESTAURANT. It was a stand-up and music showcase with comedians Kenny Robinson, K. Trevor Wilson and Marianne Gibson ….. There were also great prizes for the raffle. The show was amazing! The feature comedian Kenny Robinson did not want to get off the stage because the audience was great! A total of $1090.00 was raised.

A cat café in Japan must obtain a licence and comply with the strict requirements and

regulations of the local Animal Treatment/Protection Laws. The cafe rules are set up strictly

in favour of the cats; in particular, seeking to ensure that the cats are not disturbed by excessive and unwanted attention, such as by young children or when sleeping. A no-tail-pulling mandate means the cat cannot be hoisted. Let sleeping cats lie is another strict rule.

Visitors pay US$8-$12 an hour for the cat service. There can be 10-16 well-brushed and shampooed cats hanging out. After a thorough hand wash, the visitor can pet and play with the cats, or just relax by watching the cats while having a coffee. Many cat cafés also seek to raise awareness of cat welfare issues. Posters are put up for abandoned cats seeking homes. Pet dumping is a big problem in Japan, where about 240,000 homeless cats and 160,000 dogs are gassed each year, according to government data.

Editor’s note: While doing the research, I was surprised to find there’s actually a cat café in Hong Kong, my home city!

Invasive animal testing conducted on chimpanzees may be coming to an end. Using captive chimpanzees for animal testing began in the United States in the 1920s.In the 1950s, the Air Force started breeding them for the space program. In the mid-1970s, the importation of chimpanzees caught in the wild was banned due to concern for the preservation of threatened species. But in the 1980s, chimpanzees were used in AIDS research, which turned out to be unsuccessful. Recently, Roscoe G. Bartlett, a Republican Representative from Maryland, .has introduced bi-partisan legislation which, if passed, will finally put into action plans to phase out invasive research on these magnificent great apes in the United States.

Rep. Bartlett believes that these experiments are unnecessary. Furthermore, he does not believe that these experiments ethically, financially or scientifically justify the significant humane costs in using primates for research. Underlining the fact that we now have a much greater understanding of how invasive biomedical research on primates greatly affects them adversely, and in order to protect the researchers that need to physically restrain the animals while they are undergoing research (which causes them tremendous stress), Rep. Bartlett stresses in his article that alternatives, such as in-vitro methods, by-passes the need for using “whole” animals.Fortunately, many scientific breakthroughs have lessened the numbers in primate research. More up-to-date technologies across the board have shown that “whole” animal research is becoming increasingly less necessary.

This scene will never be seen in North America. While having tea or

coffee, or even noodles, customers are surrounded by cats, some on

the chairs and some on the table! Yet, this is not uncommon in

Japan. The world's first CAT CAFE was opened in Taiwan in 1998,

but became famous in Japan and has attracted many Japanese

tourists as well as domestic visitors. In Japan, the first cat cafe was

opened in Osaka in 2004, and Tokyo now has at least 39 cat cafés.

This is attributed to the fact that in Japan many apartments forbid

pets. The cat cafés provide relaxing companionship in what may

otherwise be a stressful and lonesome urban life.

Savory Apples ‘n Onion

This was once a pioneer favorite. Take 2 large apples

(they are in season right now and are very cheap), wash

and chop into cubes. Do likewise for a large sweet

onion (also inexpensive). Double the amounts if you are

having a guest. Saute in a pan over medium heat –

adding occasional small dashes of salt, cumin, balsamic

vinegar and the tiniest pat of butter (vegans can use

olive oil). When the onions are clear, you’re done. Yes,

it sounds weird, but it’s delicious. You’ll want to have

something to go with this that has some protein, like a

garden burger or a brown rice packet, both of which you can microwave. Apples ‘n onions only takes about 10 minutes, a few dollars and it’s delicious as a topping for rice or even by itself for a light snack.
