                                        MESSAGE FROM THE CHIEF

Happy New Year!

On January 9th, 2018, the first incident of the New Year in our dis‐

trict was a 25+ acre fire on Buckhorn Lane, called the Buckhorn Fire.

This fire underscores some things we all need to remember;

Fire can come at any me, any day and any me of year. Al‐

ways be prepared no ma er the season or the condi ons.

Make a plan with your family about what you will do if there is

a fire in your area. Do you have an evacua on plan?

Do you have all of your important papers readily accessible if you need them?

Do you have necessary medica ons ready? Are your pets prepared for evacua on?

Even when we’ve had a period of snow or other moisture in our district, it takes constant moisture over a

period of me before the fire danger is reduced significantly.

See page 8 for the new policy on Fire Burning, which explains the new process. CALL BEFORE YOU BURN.

Avoid possible penal es for not following the new procedure.

Call for non‐emergency : 719‐275‐3058

Stay informed of fire danger levels in our District, County and State. Be aware that the danger changes eve‐

ry day and some mes throughout the day. Be aware of Red Flag warnings and know how all of these

warnings can affect your outdoor ac vi es. If there is a Red Flag Warning, DO NOT BURN. Stay aware of

fire bans and condi ons in our district.

We have links to Fremont County and Colorado State fire danger informa on on our fire danger webpage.

Visit our Fire Danger webpage:

www.tallahasseevfd.com/fire‐danger.html

Fire is a significant risk to your safety and property in our community. Stay aware of fire dangers and look for

opportuni es to mi gate the danger around your home.

SAFETY TIPS Check you smoke detectors

Now is the time to check your smoke detectors to ensure they are in good working order. A monthly check involves testing the battery by pushing the test button. January is a good time for your yearly check. Check the date on your smoke detector; they are good for 10 years. Make sure to clean / dust your detector to keep it working its best.

Keep extra supplies at home

Potential winter storms don’t have to be a struggle, if you are prepared. Keep extra batteries for flashlights in case of power outages. Stock the pantry with extra non-perishable food items in case bad weather prevents you from leaving the house for a few days. Only use approved indoor heating devices; never use heating devices that produce carbon monoxide (propane heaters).

Check on neighbors

The winter months can be a challenging time for some. Checking on a neigh-bor can really go a long way to ensure their safety and well-being. Helping to clear snow and ice from an elderly neighbor’s walkway might be the differ-ence between a trip to get the mail and a trip to the hospital.
