Stop the germs, stay healthy, WASH YOUR HANDS! Keeping our hands clean is one of the most important things we can do to stop the spread of germs and stay healthy, especially in Jakarta. Many germs that cause diarrhea and respiratory infections can be spread by not washing our hands with soap and clean, running water and this is because: People frequently touch their eyes, nose, and mouth without even realizing it. Germs can get into the body through the

eyes, nose and mouth and make us sick. Germs from unwashed hands can get into foods and drinks during its preparation. Germs can multiply in some types of

foods or drinks, under certain conditions, and make people sick. Germs from unwashed hands can be transferred to other objects, like handrails, door handles, keyboards, table tops, or

toys, and then transferred to another person’s hands.

Are you paying attention to how you are washing your hands? Clean running water should be used with soap. Soap lifts dirt and microbes from the skin. Be sure to lather the backs of your hands, between the fingers and under the nails. Scrub your hands for at least 20 seconds (sing the Happy Birthday song twice). The temperature of the water does not matter. It is important that you thoroughly dry your hands after rinsing. While soap and water is the most effective way of reducing microbes on your skin, hand sanitizers can also be used as they do eliminate some types of germs. The hand sanitizer should contain at least 60% alcohol and should be rubbed into the skin until your hands are dry (do not rub off excess). Common brands include Dettol® and Purell®.

So remember…wash your hands frequently and remind your family members to do the same! Wash before and after food preparation, before meals, after using the restroom, after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing and after any other time in which you think you touched a frequently used or contaminated surface. Always carry an alcohol based hand sanitizer in the event where water and soap are not readily available. Hand hygiene information obtained from the Centre for Disease Control, USA http://www.cdc.gov

5 Reasons You Should Hire the Well Traveled What does racking up air miles have to do with high performance at work? An INSEAD professor explains.

Forwarded by Laura Berardi-Consular

When you're hiring for your business you probably look at a candidate's education, their professional experience, and their personality. Chances are one thing you're not currently considering is how much time they've spent abroad. But according to one business school professor, you might want to start factoring in not only a candidate's job history, but their travel history as well. On INSEAD Knowledge recently, professor Linda Brimm makes the case that a special class of workers brings special benefits to their employers, a group she terms global cosmopolitans.

Why you should hire global cosmopolitans:

Who are they? In a previous post she defined them as "people who have lived, worked, and studied for extensive periods in different countries." All that expat living has a profound effect on these folks. They "have views of the world and themselves that are profoundly affected by the reality of cross-border living and coping with the challenges that emerge on their diverse journeys," she notes. Which sounds personally enriching for the well-traveled themselves, but what's that got to do with the average entre preneur? This pool of talent brings unusual and valuable skills to their jobs, Brimm argues, and business owners would be well advised to give them special consideration when hiring. She outlines five key abilities international living tends to develop:

1. Global cosmopolitans see change as normal.

2. As outsiders to fixed cultural rules, they rely on creative thinking.

3. They reinvent themselves and experiment with new identities.

4. They are expert at the subtle and emotional aspects of transition.

5. They easily learn and use new ways of thinking.

Supplementing CVs with stories.

But while these inveterate border crossers might bring rare and valuable talents to your company, they can be misunderstood and underutilized by organizations. "They often end up leaving their roles because their cookie-cutter corporate jobs leave them feeling cut off from their deeper dreams and talents," Brimm warns. In order to get the best out of this group, Brimm has a simple suggestion for their managers (and would-be managers)--go beyond their CVs, which might not capture all the subtle benefits of their globe-crossing lives, and really listen to their stories. "Sometimes, they have done such a seamless job of adapting that it is hard to see their potential for bringing other skills to their work. The best way to overcome this is to get to know the individual," she writes. So next time a resume full of international travel crosses your desk, perhaps you should give it a second look. And if you decide to call that global cosmopolitan in for an interview, spend a little extra time delving into her life story to get at what skills that cross-border experience may quietly have nurtured. What's been your experience of hiring or working with the well traveled? http://www.inc.com/jessica-stillman/5-reasons-you-should-hire-the-well-traveled.html

Ibu Feby (available full time M-F) for work in Jakarta, namely the Menteng area, and for Surabaya. Feby has worked for me from August 2012 until June 2015. In addition, she worked for many other Embassy personnel over the past several years including the former CLO and Financial Officer. She was always on time and would always responsibly complete her duties without unexcused absences. She was rarely sick and had no unscheduled absences. At Executive Menteng, she has a close relationship with the building staff and was able to get many things taken care of to include avoiding a flood by making sure a leaking air conditioner was repaired. She also took great care of the enjoyable task of laundry and ironing. She is definitely a good cook and knows how to make most dishes, especially fabulous Indonesian ones. She even once made sushi rolls. Her spoken English is quite practical. Ibu Feby is a great employee and helped make my stay in Jakarta a pleasant one. Please contact Feby at +6285692338887. I would be pleased to provide more details about her work for me. I can be contacted at: [email protected]. (5/21) Bu Diah-- Great Pembantu Available We are leaving Jakarta and highly recommend our pembantu. She cooks, cleans, shops for us, adapts quickly to our preferences and has even helped to watch our daughter when our nanny was unavailable. She is very trustworthy and has become a part of our family. Please contact her directly at 081283339564. We would love to see her go to a good family! (5/21) Bu Gini?Wonderful Nanny Available Our nanny will be available this transfer season and we cannot recommend me her more highly. She has been a great addition to our family and we would love to see her go to a good household. While her primary responsibility was taking care of our two-year-old, she always went out of her way to cook, clean, shop, and do anything else we needed around the house. She is highly trustworthy and would be a great addition to any family! Please contact her directly at 081298423705. (5/21) We highly recommend Pak Sukarni as a driver. For the past three years, he has been reliable and always willing to work OT and weekends. He has worked for Embassy families for several years, so he is familiar with nearly all Embassy buildings, residences, and both JIS campuses. He knows which shortcuts to take and does errands such as dry cleaning and shoe repair runs. continued on next column

Classifieds He prefers to work for an Embassy employee living in South Jakarta, preferably for someone without a dog. He will be available starting July 10. For information, please contact Grace Choi at [email protected]. (5/21) Dependable Gardener/Jaga, available late June: Pak Rubi has worked for us for 5 years, and for other U.S. Embassy families for 8 years before that (references available). He is friendly, honest, and a nonsmoker. He always has a smile on his face. Our yard looks nice. He is quick to answer the gate if there are visitors, and is diligent about security. Willing to work overtime for parties, etc. He knows where to go if you need shoes repaired, a tailor, etc. He rarely misses work. When we go out of the country, he takes care of our house, including feeding the fish. I trust him completely. Limited English. Contact: Blair, 0811-940-2358 or [email protected]. (5/13) Very Good Housekeeper/Cook, available August 1 (after Idul Fitri) Ibu Juju has worked for us for 18 months, and before that has worked for other U.S. Embassy, Australian Embassy, and private sector Australian families for more than 25 years. She is reliable, pleasant, hard-working, and a nonsmoker. She has excellent standards of hygiene, is a very good cook of both Indonesian and foreign dishes, and enjoys learning how to cook new dishes. She is also diligent about the housework, keeping the house clean, the dishes washed, and the laundry done. She is very careful with the iron, so as not to damage our clothes. She is available to work in South Jakarta only (e.g., Kebayoran Baru, Kemang). Passive English. Contact: Blair, 0811-940-2358 or [email protected]. (5/13) Looking for a larger minivan I’m moving to Jakarta this August and would like to buy a larger minivan. We’re a family of six, and could use more space than the Innovas and Avanzas most people seem to have. If you have a Toyota Alphard, Honda Odyssey, etc. let me know. Hello! My name is Sayuri. I am a Sugar Glider http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sugar_glider. I belong to the marsupial family and a lot of people describe me as a very petit flying squirrel. In the past two months I have been living with a family that rescued me from being left all alone in Jakarta. They are looking for a loving family that can take care of me before they send me out into a dubious “sugar glider rescue facility” because they are moving away for good and cannot take me with them. I love eating fruit and honey is my absolute favorite treat! There is a good online shop that specializes in selling sugar glider food but I am also quite happy eating sunflower seeds and dried fruits, all of which you can find at the grocery store. If you are truly interested and a real animal lover I would absolutely like to cuddle and play with you. Please take me seriously because unfortunately the person that first bought me didn’t and, if it weren’t for this family that agreed to take me in at. Literally, the last minute, I don’t know where I would even be now. For further information please call or email Giovanna at 65 82311433751 [email protected] (5/13)

Ibu Meti is fantastic! She is looking for full time work in South Jakarta. She came highly recommended and deserves the praise. Her previous employer left in April, 2015 and Ibu Meti has been filling in part time for me until my pembantu starts June 1

st (I need someone who is comfortable with

bigger dogs). Ibu Meti is honest, reliable, resourceful, punctual, and pleasant. Please feel free to contact me by email at [email protected]. (5/21)

From the Australian CLO

[email protected] PAK ADE Ade is a wonderful driver and kind hearted man. He has been driving for our family for 2.5 years. He is presently rostered to drive six-days a week and has always been willing to work evenings and Sundays as required. Ade primarily ferries our two children between home and two different schools, runs errands (i.e. dry cleaning) and takes the children to after school activities / play dates. He provides reliable estimations on travel times based on his sound knowledge of routes and conditions. His ability to provide alternate route options has been invaluable during unexpected delays. We have especially valued his watchfulness over our children: making sure seat belts are on, choosing safe stopping locations and ensuring they are assisted getting in and out of the car. His English is basic, though sufficient to support a family with little or no Indonesian language skills. He has an assertive – yet safe and smooth – driving style, and keeps our car in an immaculate condition. Ade will be available early July. For further information please contact [email protected] PAK MAIMAN Our driver, Pak Maiman has been working for embassy families for over ten years. He has been with us for the past four years and has been exemplary. Pak Maiman is extremely reliable, honest and good-natured – he always keeps his calm even in the midst of the worst macet in Jakarta. He is a competent and cautious driver who is very familiar with Jakarta roads and shortcuts, and can be relied upon to run various errands. Pak Maiman speaks some English and we have no trouble communicating with him. Pak Maiman is available from early May 2015. Please contact us for further information, Valeska 08111085038 or Andrew 082114073948, or email [email protected] IBU DEVI (nanny/maid) A true gem. Devi has been working with our family for 2.5 years, initially as our maid but moved permanently into the role of nanny nearly 2 years ago. continued to next column

Classifieds She works five-days a week, but is always happy to work evenings or weekends as required. She is trustworthy, caring and a happy influence on the children. During her time with us Devi has cared for our daughter (infant to 2 year old) and son (4 to 6 year old). She is wonderful with both of them. Devi follows our instructions well in caring for the children, including hygiene, health and discipline. Devi has always communicated well keeping us up to date on the children's movements throughout the day and any issues that have occurred. Devi attended many 'Mighty Minds' early childhood classes with our daughter and it was pleasing to see her using similar ideas and activities at home. Devi is careful to divide her attention fairly between the children. She has been excellent at monitoring their schedules and appointments. Devi has completed her First Aid certificate. Devi assists with maid work where practicable. She has a strong work ethic (as nanny or maid). She is a good cook, capable of a variety of dishes (she mostly cooked western dishes for our family, including Italian, Greek and French sweet and savoury dishes) and is always keen to try something new from an English recipe. When not responsible for the children Devi conducts a variety of errands, including shopping. She has demonstrated absolute integrity in all things, including handling and accounting of cash. Devi has great English language skills. We have been supporting her to complete her high school education on weekends (completed March 2015). Devi has been a wonderful part of our family and we will miss her deeply. Devi will be available early July. For further information please contact [email protected] (08121084914 / 0404032257) or [email protected] (08119522924 / 0410600753). IBU LESTARI (maid/nanny) Lestari has been working as our pembantu for about 2 years. She works six-days a week and has always been happy to work evenings/weekends as required. Lestari's primary duties have included house cleaning, laundry and cooking. Her work is performed to a high standard. She is trustworthy and reliable. She is a good worker and follows instructions well. She has kept our home in great order. Lestari performs basic errands, including shopping. She has demonstrated integrity in all things, including handling and accounting of cash. Lestari has basic+ English skills, which have improved markedly during her time with us. Her English is sufficient for a family with little or no Indonesian language skills. She is a good cook, capable of a variety of dishes (she mostly enjoys cooking Indonesian dishes and has picked up several basic western dishes). As required Lestari performs the role of Nanny for our children (2 yo and 4yo).

Page 20 May 21, 2015

She is wonderful with both of them and although not her primary role she enjoys spending time with them. Lestari has completed basic first aid instruction at the Australian Embassy Clinic. Lestari has been a great help and we will miss her deeply. Lestari will be available early July. For further information please contact [email protected] (08121084914 / 0404032257) or [email protected] (08119522924 / 0410600753). IBU SUMIATI Sumiati has been our nanny and housekeeper for the past 2 years. She is incredible. She has taken excellent care of our three children, now aged 2,6 and 8, including from when our youngest was only 2 months old. She is kind, caring and sensible. Our children love and respect Sumiati and we feel 100% confident leaving them in her care. She has many years experience as a nanny, cook and housekeeper. She has good English, a sense of humour, initiative, and is exceptionally hard working. She is always willing to work overtime. For previous families she has looked after children while their parents have travelled outside of Jakarta. Contact Rachel on 08119592550 or [email protected] if you would like more information or would like to meet our staff. IBU SULI Suli has been our cook and housekeeper for the past year and a half. She is a great cook! She can read recipes, speak English, does all our shopping (including from local markets to ensure we get fresh produce), and demonstrates initiative. Her repertoire of recipes is wide – Thai and Indian curries, fresh pasta and pizza, Mexican food and Indonesian food. She also bakes (including fresh bread and cinnamon rolls). She is very kind and honest. Please contact Rachel on 08119592550 or [email protected] you would like more information or would like to meet our staff. Suli and Sumiati share responsibility for cleaning, washing and ironing. They work very well together and would like to keep working together if possible, but understand that that may not be possible. They would like to find work in the Kebayoran Baru, Kemang, Cipete . IBU YANTI Our housekeeper, Ibu Yanti, is looking for a part time or full time position. She is available immediately and prefers a live-out position. Ibu Yanti has been with us for three years and she has been simply wonderful. Ibu Yanti has worked with a number of expatriate families in the past and speaks reasonable English. A mature lady with easy-going disposition, she is diligent and does her duties well. continued on next column

Classifieds She is also honest and reliable and non-intrusive. Ibu Yanti helps with our food preparation. We haven’t tried her dishes but previous referees said that she can cook both Indonesian and Western dishes well. Please contact Valeska at 08111085038 or Andrew at 082114073948 or email [email protected] for further information. IBU TETI Teti has worked for us for the past 3 years as a part-time cleaner. Teti is very hard working. She is friendly, polite and gets on with her work quietly and effectively. Teti does all of the “heavy cleaning” (mopping, bathrooms etc.) but has also helped out with other household duties (including washing, ironing and food preparation) when needed, and has baby-sat on occasion. Teti is looking for part time work (3-5 half days) as she has another job in Kebayoran Baru. Please contact Rachel on 08119592550 or [email protected] if you would like more information or would like to meet our staff. IBU ANI Ani has worked as pembantu for me during the past 3 years, and for previous Embassy staff before me. Having lived in Australia previously she speaks good English and is easily understood. Her duties included cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing and other household tasks. She is a hard worker, reliable, trustworthy and loyal. I cannot speak highly enough of Ani. If you would like further information please contact me on [email protected] or +61407154419. IBU ROSE I am leaving Jakarta and would like to find employment for the BEST housekeeper in Jakarta! I went through five housekeepers before I found Rose. She cooks anything, just give her a recipe. She speaks and reads in English. Rose follows instruction, but more importantly she takes initiative. She is also very comfortable with dogs of all sizes (I have three). She is always pleasant to be around and willing to work over-time for parties. She has cared for my house and dogs in my absence and I trust her completely. I cannot speak highly enough of Rose. Rose would prefer to be in Jakarta Selatan and she does not wish to be a nanny to small children. Please call or text me for more information: Bernadette +85776405198 or contact Rose directly at 081283113671. Rose will be available at the end of May 2015.
