yourselves and would like to learn about how
to use them with your pets.

Discover The Joy Of Sharing Essential Oils With Animals
History of Essential Oils Evidence has been found of the essential oils having been utilized by the Egyptians and by
the Chinese at the same time. Essential oils have been incorporated for systemic support for
over 3000 years in India. (460-377 B.C.E.) Essential Oils are mentioned in the Bible 1100
times either directly or indirectly.
“But You have exalted my horn like that of the wild ox; I have been anointed with fresh oil.”
Psalm 92:10
What Is an Essential Oil? Essential oils can be distilled from many parts of a plant: stems, branches, fruits, flowers,
seeds, roots, bark, needles, and leaves. They are the life blood of the plant. Each essential
oil is composed of its own molecular structure. Chemical compounds of essential oils include
phenols, phenylpropanoids, monoterpenes and sesquiterpenes which serve different
purposes in the supporting the body.
How Do Essential Oils Work? Oils have intelligence and go where they are needed in the body. They seek
cells that resonate with a similar frequency. They listen for cells to resonate
like their own; that is how they know the location they are needed.
I frequently utilize essential oils for physical and emotional support. When
inhaled, essential oils interact with the olfactory nerves and the limbic system
which controls several systems of the body.
Essential oils serve you and your animal family members by providing:
• Support for the nervous system
• Helps with periodic upset/sour stomach
• A safe, toxin free way to clean your home
• Supports a healthy immune system
• Supports the lungs and sinuses
• Assists in healthy joint and cartilage function
• Helps promote emotional well-being
• and so much more!

My Top 3 Essential Oils Picks
These are my “go to” oils that I use with my animals, family members and clients:
FACTOID! Did you know? The National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health studied 2,983 ingredients in our
products at home-and found 884 toxic ingredients. 146 they knew caused cancer tumors-but were still
allowed in the United States, even though they were banned in other countries around the world. Many of
these chemicals are allowed in common cleaning supplies in the United States-things under your cabinets
right now.
There is a low cost, all-around cleaning product that is safe for pets and family members of all ages
(see page 11). And now many veterinary hospitals are using essential oils for cleaning and more too!1

The Safety Of Using Essential Oils With Animals
There has been some confusion and controversy surrounding the use of essential oils with animals.
Unfortunately, much of this concern has come about from the use of inferior essential oils. Young Living
Essential Oils are the only essential oils that I will use for myself and with my animals. This is because of the
thoroughness that has gone into the distillation process of these essential oils. You can find more information
about the 5-step Seed to Seal® process http://seedtoseal.com/en/seedtoseal.
In addition, it is important to dilute the oils properly when working with animals. I have provided some dilution
amounts at the end of this resource.
Cautionary Tales: Using Essential Oils with Cats
Particular attention has involved the use of essential oils with cats. This
concern has arisen because cats have special considerations since they
lack a liver enzyme called glucuronyl transferase that humans possess.
Essential oils are metabolized by the liver. The argument has been that
since cats lack this enzyme they are not able to metabolize essential oils.
Essential Oils Can Help Support Positive Relationships However, there is plenty of information available that supports the use of essential oils and cats. I have
worked directly with holistic veterinarians who support the use of essential oils with animals (including cats).
Tea Tree Oil (Melaluca Alternifolia) and Cats What I have found is that when concern about the use of essential
oils, this is the oil that is often brought up. Tea tree oils contain
phenolics to which cats have a special sensitivity. While
veterinarians have used tea tree oils with cats, there are
alternatives. This oil has been used by veterinarians, so if you are
interested please consult with a veterinarian who is experienced
in the use of this oil with animals.

Using Essential Oils With Animals
Dr. Jean Valnet studied and had a good part in bringing the use of essential oils to the public. Taught that
essential oils can reach any part of the body quickly because their molecules are so small they can travel
transdermally. There are three schools of aromatherapy. Originally applied to people they are now also
used with animals.
1. English model: Small drop of oil in vegetable oil. Used for stress reduction via massage
2. French model: Neat and or ingestion. Essential oil is frequently added to agave nectar, honey, a
small amount of bread.
3. German model: Focuses on the inhalation of essential oils - true aromatherapy.
I have provided methods of application for animals specifically in the “May Use as Follows” section of this
guide.
Massaging Meesha
Essential Oils Enhance the Massage Experience! There are often times when targeting a certain area
of the body for support that essential oils are
applied to specific locations. For example, for relief
of occasional mild head tension, may place essential
oils at the base of the head, on the temples or sinuses.
Another example is The Aroma Harmony Technique
(discussed more below) which involves oils being
placed on the Vita Flex points (feet for people but
paws are considered not an option for most animals
since they would not sit still for that) and spine in a
certain sequence. There is also the auricular
technique (spinal column and occipital ridge to
provide support to the nervous system). Diffusing
essential oils is an excellent method of providing periodic mood, sinus, lung, stress, and sleep support.
I also apply essential oils to chakra’s (see below) of an animal based upon my intuitive sense as well as
learned knowledge about the connection between chakras and emotional and physical wellbeing. Often,
I am drawn to apply oils to the heart area, between the shoulders, the brain stem, or the base of the spine.
If you have any energy work experience this is an appropriate time to combine these techniques with
essential oils.

Potential Methods of Using Essential Oils with Animals
How to Use Carrier Oils with Essential Oils
Petting Applications
This method involves diluting the oils by rubbing them into the palm of your hand. This can be done either
straight or with an organic diluting oil. This is followed by swirling the oils in your hand.
Varying amounts of the oils depending upon the needs and size of the animal are applied petted onto the
animal, i.e. a smaller animal, such as a rabbit, would receive almost dried oils from the hand. It is not actually
necessary to separate the fur to apply the oil. The oils will be absorbed via the hair follicles.
Often, I will pet the essential oils onto the animals where I am intuitively guided. This might include the base
of the skull/neck area for periodic calming, stomach for brief digestive support, or paws.
Please only apply to paws if you are sure that your home and any areas the animal walks on are free of
toxins (includes chemical household cleaners, see Thieves for non-toxic cleaning). Do not apply to open wound.
Always take into consideration the size of the animal.
Essential oils are often diluted in V6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil
Complex. If not available, organic olive oil or coconut oil
may be used.
2 drops of essential oil in one teaspoon–one tablespoon of
V6 carrier oil.
For smaller animals like cats and small dogs, use 1-2 drops. Be sure to dilute 80–90% (e.g., for every 1 drop of oil, use 4–
5 drops of a diluting agent, such as V-6™ Vegetable Oil
Complex.
For larger animals, like large dogs, start with 3–5 drops.
Unless otherwise indicated on the product label, dilution is
unnecessary.
For very large animals, like horses and cattle, start with 10
drops. Unless otherwise indicated on the product label,
dilution is unnecessary.
Humans – most oils can be applied “neat” or without dilution although there are certain “hot” oils that may require more dilution. For more about the safe use of
essential oils please read: www.youngliving.com
Insider Secrets to Using Essential Oils with Animals 17
Water Diffusion • Generally, 1-4 drops of essential oil are added to an essential oils diffuser. Can be used for sleep
or daytime.
• Aroma Harmony Technique combines the art of aromatherapy with the techniques of Vita Flex and
massage in the application of essential oils to various areas of the body. This collection provides a
revolutionary means of bringing balance and harmony to the body - physically, mentally, and
emotionally.
• Drip diluted oils from 6 inches above the body from tail to base of neck. Dropping from 6 inches
above. Allows the oils to pass through and benefit the energy field of the animal.
Kitty Aroma Harmony Technique • 4 drops of each oil in a 1-ounce (30mL) bottle.
• Dilute by filling the remainder of the bottle with V-6 Enhanced Vegetable Oil to fill the bottle.
• Additional oils can be added (up to 3).
Canine Aroma Harmony Technique • Small Dogs (less than 20 lbs.): 2-3 drops of each undiluted oil.
• Medium Dogs (20-50 lbs.): 3-5 drops of each undiluted oil
• Large Dogs (over 50 lbs.): 6-8 drops of each undiluted oil
Important Tips for Using Essential Oils
I have found that intention is an important aspect of essential oils. As an intuitive, I can sense that focusing on
the purpose (either for your animals, yourself, or others) increases the benefits of the essential oils. I have
also experienced the combination of prayer with essential oils to be extremely valuable.
A study by Bruce Taninio found that frequencies of oils are affected by thoughts. Prayer raised the frequency
the highest up to 15 MHz compared to 12 MHz with positive thinking alone.

Frequently Asked Questions About Essential Oils
Since animals clean themselves with their tongues, are these oils safe for animals? Diluting the essential oils (see below) before applying them to an animal means that they will receive only a limited amount of the essential oils if they clean themselves. Ingesting the essential oils is ok as long you are using 100 percent therapeutic grade essential oils.
How exactly do the oils work for emotional support? Essential oils can be received by the cells of the body via skin, fur (hair follicles), inhalation or ingestion. Essential oils can cross the “Blood Brain Barrier.” They do so because upon inhalation through the back passages of the nose and go to the amygdala in the brain. The amygdala houses the limbic system. The limbic system is the location of all emotional experiences and cannot be communicated with through spoken or written language and responds only to smell. Therefore, this non-verbal part of the brain can be contacted via essential oils. Animals can receive the benefits of inhaling essential oils for emotional support using a diffuser, applying oils to the body, putting a few drops on a cotton ball near where an animal sleeps or putting a small amount on a collar.
Do essential oils take time to work? In my experience, this depends on the individual (animal or human). You may need to apply once or twice to notice an effect or it may take a few days, a week or even weeks. If an animal shows sensitivity (pawing at nose, rubbing face on the ground) after using an oil, I will decrease the amount of the oil or the length of time I diffuse an oil. You can further dilute an oil using for example, V6 carrier oil, if it appears to be too much. NOTE: do not dilute the oils with water as it will make it worse
What, if any, conflict is there in taking the oils along with supplements? Are there any potential hazards to using them? Always discuss with your veterinarian or your doctor when taking prescription medication or supplements. Most of the time essential oils can be utilized at the same time. For more on safety and essential oils: http://www.youngliving.com/en_US/discover/essential-oil-safety
Why do I only use young living essential oils for my animal family and myself? I personally have utilized Young Living Essential oils for a variety of issues and for general support. Simply put, I use these oils because I have seen their positive effects and because I trust their purity. From the Young Living website:
Young Living is proud to set the standard for essential oil purity and authenticity by carefully monitoring the production of our oils through our unique Seed to Seal® process. From the time the seed is sourced, until the oil is sealed in the bottle, we apply the most rigorous quality controls possible to ensure that you are receiving essential oils exactly the way nature intended. http://seedtoseal.com/en/seedtoseal.
According to Dr. Herve Casabianca (Ph.D.), Chairman of the International Standards Organization (ISO) Committee on Essential Oil Standards (a European agency whose acronym is AFNOR), there is only one company in North America who regularly sends samples to the AFNOR laboratory in France for testing to be measured against the international standards for therapeutic quality, and that is Young Living, Inc. Center for Aromatherapy Research and Education
"Therefore, "says Dr. Casabianca, "Young Living oils are the only therapeutic grade oils, of which I am aware, produced and/or marketed by an American company."

Ready To Get Started?
Here’s How to Order Young Living Oils
The best option I have found is to enroll as a distributor. This is because you are receiving a discount
on the diffuser that you won’t be eligible for otherwise. You will also receive 24% wholesale
discount on Young Living products.
Ideal if you think you might purchase $50.00 or more of essential oils per year. You’re under no
obligation to keep up the $50.00 per year order. If you don’t, you will simply no longer be eligible
for the wholesale discount. You will have already met that with your premium starter kit purchase.

support your animal during our sessions.
One of my greatest passions is teaching others how to better
