Siding- aluminum .024 gauge w/ deep wood grain Elevation soft metal- custom bent aluminum Gutter/Downspout- 5k seamless Observation and Inspection Dispute Roof- Hail like damage found to lower and upper steep slope on all elevations. Hail damage was most likely due to the recent hailstorm from 8/2/15. The hail like damage is consistent with the damage found on the soft metal roof vents and downspouts. Wind damage found to all slopes of the roof. The uplift that unsealed the shingles was caused by wind. The debris under the shingles was caused by wind. The shingles are no longer sealable as the manufacturer intended. Shingles are manufactured to unseal for reparability purpose. Shingles are also manufactured to seal for water shedding purpose. Unsealed shingles was most likely caused by the 8/2/15 wind/hail storm and 2/19/16 windstorm. The negative and positive pressure from wind causes uplifts. With a strong enough uplift, shingles will at first unseal and eventually crease or break if not repaired immediately. Hail like damage and wind debris damage found to the aluminum siding on all elevations.

Conclusion

Most claims representatives are taught to handle claims honestly and ethically. Indeed, the standard textbook for claims handlers, which leads to an Associate in Claims designation, is James J. Markham's, The Claims Environment (1st ed., Insurance Institute of America 1993). Markham's textbook sets forth simple, clear claims handling principles including:

Markham at vii."When a covered loss occurs, the insurance company's obligation under its promise to pay is triggered. The claim function should ensure the prompt, fair and efficient delivery of this promise."

Markham at 6."Therefore, the claim representative's chief task is to seek and find coverage, not to seek and find coverage controversies or to deny or dispute claims."

Markham at 13."...the insurance company should not place its interests above the insured's."

Markham at 13."The claim professional handling claims should honor the company's obligations under the implied covenant of good faith and fair dealings."

Markham at 274"When an insurance company fails to pay claims it owes or engages in other wrongful practices, contractual damages are inadequate. It is hardly a penalty to require an insurer to pay the insured what it owed all along."

Markham at 277-278"Upper management also has a responsibility to maintain proper claim-handling standards and practices."

When Is It Too Cold Or

Too Hot To Shingle A

Home?

Theoretically, there is no lower or upper temperature limit governing when asphalt fiberglass shingles may be applied as long as appropriate precautions are taken. In cold weather, for easiest handling, temperatures should be above 40° F. In hot weather, for easiest handling, temperatures should be below 90° F.

Cold Weather Tips For

Easier Installation And

To Prevent Damage…

GAF suggests the following…. for easier installation and to prevent damage during cold weather: Store shingles in a heated area above 70° F for at least 24 hrs, if possible, prior to use. This will

make the shingles more pliable and easier to install. For more information on storage, seeTechnical Point #122 on Proper Shingle Storage.

GAF prefers that the racking method not be used and special care should be taken in coldweather. Racking requires the lifting/bending of the shingles to place the last nail. This methodmay cause them to crack or break along the bend either immediately or in the future.

Sealing time for the shingles will vary depending on slope of roof, its orientation, and theamount of sun/heat exposure that the shingles receive. Hand sealing of shingles may berequired if the temperature is too cold to activate the Dura-Grip® adhesive relatively promptly. For more details on hand sealing, see Technical Point #114.

Hot Weather Tips For

Easier Installation And

To Prevent Damage…

GAF suggests the following…. for easier installation and to prevent damage during hot weather: Store shingles in a shaded area out of the sun, if possible, prior to use. This will help prevent

them from sticking in the bundle. For more information on storage, see Technical Point #122on Proper Shingle Storage.

Wear soft soled shoes to prevent scuffing or other damage to the shingle.

What Issues May Be

Encountered When It Is

Hot Or Cold During

Installation?

During very cold weather, shingles may: Become brittle and possibly crack or break where bent. Need to be hand sealed. Have a condition known as “cold curl”. (shingle edges curl up due to cold)During very hot weather, shingles may: Stick together in the wrapper or on the roof. Be more easily damaged by foot traffic. Tear during installation.

Is My Warranty

Affected?

No, the GAF Limited Warranty for the shingles will remain in effect. However, any damage such as cracking, lack of sealing, foot damage or tearing is the responsibility of the applicator and is excluded from GAF’s responsibility under the terms of our Limited Warranty, which covers only manufacturing defects.

Is Damage Immediately

Noticeable?

Not always… hail impact may cause a gradual loss of granules that can, over time, result in premature aging of the shingles.

Without visual damage, there is no real way to be sure how much damage shingles have encountered. Outward damage may not be apparent until months or years later.

How Can I Tell If The

Roof Was Damaged?

Generally, damage can be seen as indentations and/or fractures in the shingles surface. Hailstones vary in size, shape, and hardness and can create a random pattern of dents or depressions. If this is not evident, look for indentations on metal flashings, siding, chimney caps, or even skylight flashings. After some time, clusters of granules may come off (at the point of impact) in a random pattern and expose the asphalt.

What Are The Possible

Types Of Damage?

Granule loss at points of impact, which may be accompanied by surface depression. Cracks in the surfacing, which may radiate outward from points of impact. Exposed fiberglass mat, where the granule-asphalt surfacing has been shattered and

has broken away from the mat. A fractured fiberglass mat, which may or may not be immediately visible. A fractured

mat may result in tears radiating out from the points of impact. Furthermore, hiddendamage to the mat can manifest and develop into cracks and tears at a later point intime as the shingles wear.

Storm damage may result in the loosening of the self-seal strip. This damage may beimmediately visible or may weaken the seal integrity, creating the possibility of futureshingle blow off.

Warranty Coverage? Shingle blow-offs or broken sealant bonds caused by winds greater than the wind

warranty coverage of the shingle is excluded from the GAF Shingle Limited

Warranty. Note: Warranty coverage for shingle blow-offs or broken sealant bonds lasts

from 5 to 15 years depending on the type of shingle.

Other types of damage caused by storms, such as granule loss or that caused by flying

debris or hail, are not covered. Granule loss and impact damage may be immediately

visible or can be latent, causing the shingles to deteriorate prematurely.
