Healing and Health are derived from similar Old English words, haelp, which meanswholeness, sound or well, and haelan, which means cure; save; make whole, sound and well. So it shouldn’t be surprising that Inspira Health Network is focused on bothhealing and health.

As we proceed along the health care reform journey, one thing is certain – health organizations, such as Inspira, must sharpen their focus on fostering, promoting andpreserving good health. It may sound strange, but our health network leadership is developing strategies to keep you out of our hospital beds.

As a leading regional health care organization, we recognize that we must do morethan heal. We must be partners in support of healthier communities. What can we, as ahealth care organization, do to help each person in our service area live a healthier life? That’s a question that gets asked often at Inspira Health Network. It’s also a questionwe regularly discuss with our partners from various health alliances and collaboratives.

There are many strategies and tactics that we employ to help bring about the healthiercommunities we all hope for. In this annual report you will see samples of what we aredoing to support the health and wellness of our communities. I hope you read throughthese pages, and keep an eye out for expanded and new programs that we will be introducing in the next 12 months.

Sincerely,

John A. DiAngelo

And part of fulfilling that mission is offering care in more locations across three counties. Some recent examples of how our network has expanded care to meet community needs include:

We’re partnering with skilled pediatricians and neonatologists from Nemours/Alfred I. duPontHospital for Children in Wilmington right here in our community. These experts support pediatric inpatient units and pediatric emergency rooms at our medical centers in Vinelandand Woodbury.

We’ve enhanced cardiac care throughout our region by adding emergency angioplasty services at Inspira Medical Center Vineland. Inspira Medical Center Woodbury boasts a five-year track record of excellent outcomes for this life-saving procedure for heart attack patients.

With inpatient and outpatient programs for children, adolescents and adults, Inspira offers acomprehensive array of behavioral health services in Bridgeton and Woodbury. Now we’ve introduced an adolescent outpatient unit in Woodbury, as well as a grant-funded program inBridgeton and Woodbury that assists patients with both mental health and addiction needs.Earlier this year we completed an $18 million multi-year renovation project, benefitting these programs.

We’re teaching the physicians of tomorrow in our graduate medical education programs offered through a partnership with the Rowan University School of Osteopathic Medicine and Thomas Jefferson University. The network’s growing residency programs in Vineland andWoodbury bring new physicians to our region, some of whom stay and practice medicine in our communities. Our Vineland residency program is now the second fastest growing one in the country.

Advancements in information technology have become essential to providing high qualitycare for our patients. Inspira is continually implementing network-wide digital systems thatenhance care and allow physicians and patients to easily access their medical informationdigitally. Later this year, we will complete a $4 million upgrade at Inspira Medical CenterWoodbury, enhancing communications and providing for the seamless transfer of clinical, business and patient business services data between our hospitals.

and Wellness Alliance will focus on five priority health factors through 2015.• High Risk Behaviors

The remarkable changes to our nation’s health care system have created both great opportunity and difficultchallenges. These challenges and opportunities are linkedto the “Triple Aim” of health care reform: improving theexperience of care, improving the health of populations, and reducing per capita costs of health care.

To remain financially viable in this era of shifting paradigms and shrinking reimbursements, every decisionwe make must be weighed against today’s reality andour most educated guess about what the future holds. Our continued strength as an organization is critical toour mission of improving the lives of all we serve.

As a not-for-profit health network, we are committed to providing high-quality health care services to all individuals in a nondiscriminatory manner, regardless of ability to pay. We strive to remove financial barriersto health care for every person who is vulnerable, unin-sured or underinsured. Inspira Health Network offerscharity care to anyone without insurance who earns up to 200 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines;substantial discounts are available to those earning up to 550 percent of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.

Our goal is to work with each individual to fully explorepayment options and financial assistance. Financialcounselors make every effort to assist patients with eligibility and enrollment in all available federal, state and local programs. Recognizing that there are circumstances where a patient may not qualify, additional financial assistance is available through

the Inspira Health Network Financial Assistance Program(internal charity care). When needed, translation and interpreter services are always provided to improve access to care for all.

$49.78 million – non-reimbursed Medicare and Medicaid costs of careIn most cases, government-sponsored health insuranceprograms, such as Medicare and Medicaid, do not coverthe entire cost of care, resulting in millions of dollars ofuncompensated care. In 2013, Inspira Health Network’s(Bridgeton, Elmer and Vineland campuses) Medicareshortfall totaled $23.84 million; the Medicaid shortfalltotaled $7.19 million. Inspira Medical Center Woodbury’sMedicare shortfall totaled $17.80 million; the Medicaidshortfall totaled $947,007.

$46.08 million – charity care to the uninsured and underserved (at cost) This care helps meet the needs of patients who have no health coverage and cannot afford to pay for healthcare services. In 2013, Inspira Health Network(Bridgeton, Elmer and Vineland campuses) provided$16.51 million in NJ Charity Care and $16.31 millionworth of health services to community residentsthrough Inspira Health Network’s internal charity care.Inspira Medical Center Woodbury provided $6.72 million in NJ Charity Care and $6.54 million worth of health services to community residents through Inspira Health Network’s internal charity care.
