5SELF COACHING SCHOLARS

SCS | WELCOME

Hello!

Brooke I BELIEVE IN YOU.

Coaching work has given me the courage to show up anyway and offer value to the world in my small way. And that value has been received beyond my wildest expectations. I live what I am teaching. I set the example by being generous with my offerings and over-delivering value so my students can see how much benefit comes from focusing on delivering and over-delivering value to the people we are offering to help.

Success is the byproduct of self coaching and making a valuable contribution. In this magazine you will read just a handful of the success stories we receive daily. These are men and women who decided that repeating a past they weren’t satisfied with was unacceptable. The courage and energy they have put into showing up as the best versions of themselves makes my eyes water every time I hear their stories. In fact, their success is their contribution.

Let my students inspire you. Don’t sit back and admire them, although there is so much to admire. Instead, take their valuable contribution as a gift and follow their example. Go get YOURS, and in doing so you will make your life an inspiration to the round of students who follow.

I often tell my students that the work they want to create for the world matters, and I mean really matters. Nowhere have I proven this more true than in the work I do with Self Coaching Scholars.

I created this program out of love for my students and it has been an incredible example of contribution, meeting value, and all around success. These are the three things that make entrepreneurship and coaching work.

Let’s start with contribution. I have put my life’s work into Scholars. Scholars is a very affordable membership program where someone can, in one month, get full exposure to my lifetime of knowledge and creation.

Inside of Scholars is all my work on The Model and Self Coaching. There are modules on Feeling Better and Buffering. Members can spend hours listening to my teachings on Overeating and Overdrinking, two of the most impactful courses I have been able to share with my clients, that took over a decade to create. And finally, they get to learn my tools on Entrepeneurship, Money, Relationships, and Outcome Creation. Scholars is the ultimate gift I have to offer, everything I have spent my life learning, and I offer it as my contribution to each of my students and to the field of Life Coaching in general.

Contribution is what I’m able to do because I did the work on myself to not be afraid. I’m able to show up to the world and teach what I know with the willingness to be rejected, ridiculed or even ignored. The Self thelifecoachschool.com

“I WAS LOOKING FOR ‘MY’ COACH. SCHOLARS WAS

THE ANSWER. I LOVE THAT I HAVE A FRAMEWORK, THE

MODEL, OF COURSE, FOR ANYTHING THAT COMES UP.

IT’S LIKE ‘OH I HAVE THE MODEL, EVERYTHING IS NO BIG DEAL, I CAN HANDLE IT,

I’VE GOT THIS’.” LAURA CONLEY, 34,

Life Coach/Yoga Teacher and New Mom!

CHRISTINA KOLB, 34, Pharmaceutical Sales

When I first joined Scholars, if I had trouble working The Model, I would ask my brother to walk through them with me. He is so grateful for this! I love the changes that have come into my own life, but it means so much to see this work impacting the people I love.

SUZANNE SMITH, 35 Sports Dietitian

I have taken advantage of being coached live with Brooke and learning from watching her coach others. Getting coached on Ask a Coach has also been very helpful for me. I think in both scenarios I’m able to work through a model or sticking point quicker than on my own.

RANDI RUBENSTEIN, 46, Parent Coach

I love how Brooke combines coaching and teaching. I love The Self Coaching Scholars Model. I was able to coach live with Brooke and in about 15 minutes, she healed a major issue in my life...a deep rooted mom thing. Pretty big stuff, if you ask me.

Each of our lives matter so much more than most of us realize. The Self Coaching Scholars you will read about here have literally changed the world by becoming more of who they truly are.

By taking responsibility for how they think, feel, act, and for what they create, they have added more consciousness and deliberateness to the world.

This is not indulgent, it’s the opposite. By doing the work and getting the results, they show you, the reader, that this is not only possible, but incredibly fun and exciting. They are special for sure, but not any more special than you.

If they can do it, you most certainly can do it too. Why not blow your own damn mind? Why not be one of our next success stories?

THE SELF COACHING MODEL The Model is a foundational tool that explains a universal truth - every result in your life was created by a thought. How we think about things determines how we feel about things. How we feel determines what we do. What we do or don’t do creates our results. The sum results in our lives creates our life. Period. This model is life altering, because it brings awareness to why our lives are the way they are, and how to create change by deliberately choosing how we think.

WENDY MATHER, 56, Respite Worker

I am waking up! I am learning to love myself more deeply and unconditionally. Life has gone from grayscale to vibrant color. I am learning to cry for the first time in my life. It’s beautiful!

I SMILE MORE. I LAUGH MORE. I HAVE MORE ENERGY BOTH FROM EATING BETTER, MASSIVE ACTION TO PROPEL ME FORWARD, AND JUST HAPPINESS IN GENERAL. WHILE I STILL HAVE WORK TO DO IN CHANGING MANY, MANY LIVES OF OTHER AUTISTIC MOMS, I KNOW THAT I AM ON THE RIGHT PATH. GINA BAKER, 37, Parent Coach

GAIL TOLBERT, 46, Leadership Development Coach

Every time I see Brooke coaching on live video sessions, I learn something valuable about myself. Brooke is the epitome of what it looks like to show up as your authentic self every day, embracing each moment.

ANDREA POZZI, 51, Family Fitness Club CFO

I had been distracting myself with Facebook for 3 hours a day, sometimes more. Through Self Coaching Scholars I learned that this was a form of buffering. I am not buffering with Facebook and it has been life changing to have walked away.

GINA TVETEN, 52, Certified Life/Weight Coach

I’m now a 52 year old women with dreams that I can touch. I know that I have thoughts that aren’t always healthy for me. And I know I can change them. I understand that this is hard stuff, but the most powerful knowledge I’ve gained is that I can do hard stuff.

EMILY WASHBURN, 29, Office Manager/ Massage Therapist

The Self Coaching Model is like glorious water to a thirsty soul - I moved beyond depression and suicidal thoughts/plans, and I’m so much lighter and more peaceful. I know I can handle anything now because I’ve learned how to handle my emotions and not run away from them.

JAMI SCOTT, 37, Information Technology Audit

I have never felt more successful at being a mom. When my baby was born I wasn’t sure I could do it. I fought to control this tiny human and was just waiting for things to be better. Now, I know I can handle anything. I’ve never felt more myself and ready to show up in this world. There is so much possibility.

CHRISTINE PLAMANN, 39, Photographer

I met my 2017 revenue goal in early September, almost four months ahead of schedule. Creating time to focus on my business in a meaningful way has freed up even more time to focus on expansion. I’ve taught a local class for four years and because of Scholars, I’m now preparing to launch an online class which will double my revenue. Instead of spending my busy season in a state of overwhelm, I am focused, calm and ready to make this year the most successful of my 13-year career. I have more love, more time, and more money.

KENDRA HUFFMAN, 37, Life Coach/Mom of 4

Going through Scholars taught me about what love truly means. I applied all Brooke’s tools on relationships and it completely changed our marriage. I stopped seeking my husband’s attention to feel validated and lovable. I learned to love myself and not take on his emotions. Our marriage is on a whole new level now.

“I USED THE WORK THAT WE DID IN MAY ON RELATIONSHIPS, TO CHOOSE TO FALL IN LOVE WITH MY HUSBAND AGAIN. HE IS STILL THE SAME GUY DOING THE SAME STUFF THAT USED TO MAKE ME THINK WE WERE DOOMED. AFTER WORKING HARD USING THE TOOLS I’VE TRANSFORMED MY MARRIAGE”. JENNIE SCOBY, 53, Mortgage Loan Originator

“SCHOLARS HAS BROUGHT COMMITMENT AND DISCIPLINE TO MY LIFE. I HAVE THE UNDERSTANDING THAT THIS IS AN INVESTMENT IN BUILDING MY CAPABILITIES AND IN TURN, MY CONFIDENCE. AT TIMES, I STILL FEEL SELF-CONSCIOUS AND DOUBTFUL, BUT I’M LEARNING TO FEEL IT AND TAKE ACTION ANYWAY - IT’S ALL WORKING. I’M HELPING PEOPLE WITH THE CONTENT ON MY WEBSITE. I’M WRITING. I’M TEACHING. I’M COACHING.”ANGIE MERCED, 42, Speech-Language Pathologist/Life Coach

OUR SCHOLARS WHO HAVE MASTERED THE MODEL UNDERSTAND...• How powerful they

are and how much control they have over every aspect of their lives.

• Why recognizing the difference between a thought and a circumstance is crucial to exercising this control.

• That nothing outside of them needs to change in order for them to feel better.

• That the past has no control over them until they have a thought about it

• That the worst thing that can happen is a feeling.

• That we need the contrast of negative feelings to recognize and appreciate the positive.

• How to think in order to achieve any goal.

“I WANTED TO FEEL BETTER AND IMPROVE MY BUSINESS AND MONEY MINDSET. I FEEL LIKE I HAVE THE SECRET TO LIFE AND ALL THE TOOLS I NEED TO KEEP GROWING AND EVOLVING. I REALIZED THE POWER OF MY THINKING AND I FEEL SO EMPOWERED TO CREATE THE RESULTS I WANT. I AM EXCITED ABOUT MY FUTURE BECAUSE I KNOW THAT I CAN DO ANYTHING.”ARIANNA VARGAS, 32, Entrepreneur

CONQUERING EMOTIONAL

EATINGPediatrician’s weight loss leads to newfound athleticism and a zeal for life.

Right: Being at a healthier weight has opened my world to enjoying many outdoor recreational activities with my husband. Together, we have taken up yoga, paddleboarding, cross-country and downhill skiing.

When I was only nine months old, my pediatrician put me on my first diet. This started a lifelong preoccupation with weight and dieting. To compensate, I purposely put myself in places

where I could excel. I was the fat girl in school, but I was also the smart girl and the talented musician.

In high school, I was at a normal weight but that was only because I was bulimic. My weight, and how I felt about it, caused me to have a great deal of self-doubt. I put so much pressure on myself to be good at everything. After high school, whenever I relaxed and tried to live life “normally”, the weight would come back on. I weighed 200 pounds when I graduated college.

LIFE WEIGHED ON ME, TOOI went on to become a successful doctor. While I don’t think

my weight affected my career, I always felt that people were questioning how I could be so overweight if I knew so much about health. The weight definitely impacted my quality of life. Being on my feet all day was almost unbearable. I would come home completely exhausted with no energy left for my family life. I wondered how long I would make it. Would I collapse one day and that would be it?

My husband has supported me from 127-260 pounds. His only concern was for me to be healthy. However, he’s a triathlete and

I couldn’t do most of the things he enjoys - hiking, biking, and other physical activities. I wanted to be able to share in the fun.

Looking back, I think of my past preoccupation with weight as a filter that I saw the world through. Every day I would wake up and think “I have to lose weight.” It invaded my thoughts and feelings on a daily basis. On my birthday, I would feel guilty eating cake and thinking “Why should a fat person enjoy cake?” It was continually gnawing at me. For instance, instead of enjoying the planning of our sons’ graduation trips to Hawaii and Belize, all I could think about was that I would have to wear a swimsuit and be in the water. I just never enjoyed things the way that I wanted to.

ADDRESSING EMOTIONAL EATINGIn 2014, at 260 pounds, I was preparing for a hip operation when I came upon Brooke’s book entitled If I’m so Smart, Why Can’t I Lose Weight. I was worried about having surgery at that weight and going through the recovery process. Her book totally resonated with me and I started her online program right away. I went on to join her weight loss school and later her ›

Stop Overeating Master Class so that I could get more intensive coaching. Now I’m in Self Coaching Scholars and the results are far more than I imagined.

I’ve lost more weight than I ever dared to hope for – 110 pounds overall. I lost 40 pounds those first few months, but realized that I still wasn’t dealing with my emotional eating. I began to understand there had been and still was a restlessness in my body that was a trigger for me and I would eat to numb it out. The feelings would stop when I ate, but come back afterward. I also struggled with discomfort around so many other things in my life.

Work as a pediatrician was a big challenge for me. The pressure of feeling that I had to fix everything weighed heavily on me. It grew to the point of being fearful every time I walked into an examining room. I would be thinking “What if I can’t fix the problem this time?” This fear began to subside as I developed a practice of meditation. I used The Model to change my negative thoughts about work to “It is my responsibility to coach, educate, and inspire my patients and their parents, but it is not my responsibility to fix everyone.” Now, I partner with my patients and they take responsibility for their health and the health of their young children.

This has made all the difference in the world! I can handle a crazy busy day without chocolate and without

“BEING FREE OF EMOTIONAL EATING HAS BEEN AN INCREDIBLE LIFT IN MY LIFE. I HAVE LEARNED HOW TO FEEL MY FEELINGS AND DEAL WITH THEM WITHOUT BUFFERING.”

too much stress. Work is much more joyful now. My partners and I laugh with each other and with the patients, too. We go home happy at the end of the day. The change in me has been so apparent, it has inspired one of my partners to take up meditation, as well.

I CAN DO HARD THINGSBeing free of emotional eating has been an incredible lift in my life. I have learned how to feel my feelings and deal with them without buffering. Bad things still happen. The difference is how I choose to deal with them and whether I decide to pile on layers of worry and self-blame. This is the true benefit of the mindset work. I describe it as being sort of ‘on to yourself ’, and being on to yourself gives you a choice of how to look at a situation, how to feel about it and how to deal with it.

I also learned that I can do things that are really hard. Setting goals and being able to achieve them has given me a tremendous amount of confidence. The skills and tools I’ve learned in Self Coaching Scholars have helped me in all areas of my life.

My husband and I have an active lifestyle together. We took up paddleboarding and I started a yoga practice. We competed in a 22-mile cross-country ski race. It was very hard, but I realized much of athletic accomplishment is a mind game, and I used my newfound self coaching skills to conquer each new physical goal.

I’ve learned that I don’t need to settle for good enough and that it’s okay to set high goals. For example, I thought I was happy enough in our humble home, but we recently decided to buy an amazing house in a neighborhood closer to work. It has cut down on my commute, giving me more free time for family and hobbies – Yay!

I used to come home at night and crash. We are so active now. One of our sons recently told a friend “I have to check before I come home, because I never know where my parents are or what they are going to be doing.”

I finally believe that what I have to say matters. I can voice my opinion at work without fear. I’m more comfortable with who I am and this has led to more connected relationships with my partners and with my patients, which makes my days more rewarding.

People look to me for inspiration and see me as a positive example. This is a new role that I am happily getting used to. In the past, I never wanted to draw attention to myself. Now I’m seeing that I have something to share with people and that it’s okay to lead by example. I want people to know that they can have what they want in life, too.

“I FINALLY BELIEVE

THAT WHAT I HAVE TO SAY

MATTERS.”

Understand the real causes of excess weight and work with your body for permanant weight loss.

You know you need to stop overeating, and you’ve tried everything, but you keep failing. You feel stuck, hopeless and ashamed, and you wonder what’s wrong with you and

why you can’t get this. If you take one thing from this article, know that there is nothing wrong with you,

and you don’t need more willpower. In Scholars, we use current science to address the three real causes of excess weight — overhunger, overdesire, and emotional eating — to lose and

maintain your weight without ever dieting again.

OVERHUNGEROverhunger is a result of hormonal imbalance which is caused by following the nutrition advice of well-meaning but misguided experts. In Scholars, we teach you how to address overhunger by eating in a way that balances your hormones, especially insulin, so that your body learns to use your own fat for fuel, and you learn what true physical hunger feels like, possibly for the first time in your adult life.

OVERDESIREOverdesire is caused by your brain, which is programmed to seek pleasure. We were designed to elicit dopamine, our pleasure chemical, when we engage in activities that ensure our survival, like eating and sex. The problem is that our brains get used to being flooded with an abnormal amount of dopamine when we eat certain foods, and so we we start to desire more and more. That’s why, when you try restrict your eating, you experience cravings that you can only fight for so long. Your brain is making you desperate for it’s dopamine hit.

In Scholars, we learn how to manage our cravings, and to modulate our dopamine response, so that we learn to experience the pleasure that comes from true wellbeing, and we lose our desire for the fleeting and false pleasure we get from overeating.

EMOTIONAL EATINGEmotional eating is caused by using using food to cope with feelings. This is something most of us learned as children, and we are strongly programmed to seek relief from our sadness, loneliness, overwhelm, boredom and stress, with food. In Scholars we call this buffering - we use food and other false pleasures to to provide a buffer between ourselves and our emotions. You don’t have to do this. You must  find  the  cause  of  your  emotions,  which  are  always  thoughts, and then learn how to manage your thinking in order to choose how you want to feel. The Self Coaching Model is the best way to do this, and it’s what we learn and practice daily in Self Coaching Scholars. Bonus, you can use this model to solve any other problem that you have, because all problems originate in our minds.

Hundreds of Scholars have used this comprehensive approach to address the causes of overeating and lose thousands of pounds. They weigh what they want to weigh, and they know how to do it permanently.

“THE FREEDOM FROM FOOD ADDICTION HAS BEEN SOMETHING I HAVE WANTED MY ENTIRE LIFE. EVERY DAY I WAKE UP GIDDY THAT I HAVE GIVEN MYSELF THE GIFT OF BEING AT GOAL WEIGHT FOR SO LONG AND FINALLY FOREVER.” MARGARET HOSTERMAN, 65, Retired

HOW WE

SCHOLAR SUCCESSLearning how to stop overeating by managing their minds is key to our Scholars weight loss triumph.

VALERIE BESTLAND, 45, Flight Paramedic

Thank you. You have saved my life. The irony is, I save lives for a living. Yet, I had never thought to save my own. With your tools and knowledge I’ve lost 30 pounds, taken a break from drinking alcohol, improved relationships with myself, husband, and co-workers.

IVY SUN, 48, Optometrist

Without your program, I would likely have lived the rest of my life with suboptimal mental and physical health. My frequent cycles of depression are almost gone! I can finally wear my “skinny” clothes and a bikini! I am much happier in my marriage. I am a much kinder and more patient mother.

AMY D’ANNIBALE, 48, IT Manager

Scholars has been a game changer. I use every type of tool in one way or another and I’ve lost 40 pounds, stopped putting in hours and hours weekends for my job, and made a process flow for house cleaning. Done. And done.

Jeff Gardner

STOPPING OVERDRINKING

Jeff Gardner shares his journey to free himself from the urge to drink.

WHAT WAS YOUR LIFE LIKE BEFORE YOU ENROLLED IN SELF COACHING SCHOLARS? My business, that had once been very

successful, was deteriorating. I had pulled back from it because it just wasn’t fulfilling anymore. I was playing it small and safe so that no one would judge me. On the outside, everything looked okay but on the inside I was miserable. I felt a ton of stress, fear, overwhelm, and frustration. I was looking for someone with a lantern to guide me out of this place.

I was also struggling with a heavy drinking habit that started when I went through a nasty divorce 15 years ago. Instead of owning the problem, I was blaming my partner because he would drink at night and I would join him. This led to many alcohol-induced arguments that added a lot of tension to our relationship. I felt stuck and didn’t know how to change that.

WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO DO THIS PROGRAM? After deciding that I was unhappy working in my business, I was thinking about what to do next when I stumbled on Brooke’s podcasts. Of all the courses I had taken in personal development and all the speakers I had listened to, no one had resonated with me the way Brooke and her teachings did. I listened to all her podcasts, at the time there were 150. I listened in the car, at the gym, and at home. I couldn’t get enough of them. Everything she was saying just connected with me. I was feeling great and wanted more.

That’s when Brooke announced the Self Coaching Scholars program. The podcasts were the listening and learning. The Self Coaching Scholars program was the

“FREEING MYSELF FROM THE URGE TO

DRINK WAS JUST THE

BEGINNING.”

applying and the doing. I decided to jump in. Through this program and the Stop Overdrinking training, I learned how to stop drinking altogether and that has made a tremendous difference in my life. I’ve also developed skills and tools to deal with the rest of my life in a powerful and positive way.

WHAT’S IT LIKE FOR YOU TO BE IN THE PROGRAM?The experience of being in this program has been phenomenal! It’s been great to do the work and be supported and guided along the way. Whenever I needed help or advice, there was a live coaching call, the Ask a Coach section, or another class. Every time I fell down, I volunteered to be coached because every drinking situation in my life created a different negative thought. For example, not drinking at home was a different challenge than not drinking at a club. The Model and the coaching helped me with each thought and helped me move through the process. I also learned a lot from the coaching that was given to other people as well. It broadened my perspective on my own situation.I worked on issues that triggered my drinking. One of them was a feeling that there was something wrong with me. I would feel anxiety in social situations worrying that people were judging me and possibly rejecting me. Alcohol helped me deal with it in the moment but I had never developed the skills to free myself from this anxiety. I was just buffering.

This may sound ironic, but in a way, I’m actually comfortable when anxiety hits me now - in fact, I think it’s pretty normal. The answer in these situations is to do The Model in my head and realize that it’s just a ›

negative thought that’s triggering the difficult feelings. This allows me to release the anxiety, relax, and socialize. Nowadays I can be comfortable in every situation I’m in without drinking.

When I stopped drinking, I never said anything to my partner about it. I was afraid I would not follow through and look foolish. I just went through the process of cutting back. I stopped blaming him for my drinking and just let him be him. He started to gradually reduce his drinking on his own, eventually cutting out about 95% of his drinking. Without the alcohol-fuelled arguments, our relationship is now better than it has been in many years.

HOW HAS THE WORK YOU’VE DONE IN SCS HELPED YOU IN OTHER AREAS OF YOUR LIFE?I went from hating my business to not hating it. Then I transitioned it to another business that I love.

I’ve completely stopped stress eating.I have a better relationship with my parents. I can

relax and just love them for who they are in every single moment. This has been wonderful!

My relationship with my daughter is better than ever. I’m more confident in my parenting and more relaxed with her. Because of that, she is able to be more relaxed and open with me as well.

Today, I am happy because I choose to be happy. I know that I’m growing all the time. I can honestly say that I love myself. These are the thoughts I have on a daily basis and it’s phenomenal!

HOW WE

stop overdesiringin Scholars

The tools Jeff used to stop overdrinking can be applied to anything you have too much desire for.

We teach you why cutting back using willpower doesn’t work – you only have a limited amount of willpower available to you each day, and once it depletes, you give in, drink, and that strengthens your conditioned desire.

We understand that you drink more than you want. That you can’t cut back and you can’t quit. You’re suffering from hangovers, embarrassing drunk moments, disturbed sleep, extra weight,

fogginess, and irritability. And you don’t want to ask for help because you’re scared of being stigmatized or being told to stop drinking. We get it. In Scholars, we don’t ask you to label yourself or give up alcohol altogether.

Instead, we first study the cause of overdrinking, which is overdesire, in order to solve this problem. Your desire for alcohol is a conditioned, learned response. You unknowingly programmed your automatic brain to desire more alcohol than your conscious brain wants.

Here’s how it works - every time you thought “a drink will relax me”, this thought caused you to feel desire. When you answered that desire with a drink, you got the reward of feeling relaxed. Your brain learned that alcohol feels good, and by now you’ve reinforced it so many times that it’s a practiced neural pathway that feels like an automatic desire. That’s why it feels as if your drinking is out of control.

We know you’re blaming yourself, and you’re lonely. You will learn that there’s nothing wrong with you and that your brain is functioning normally.

We develop new, intentional, conditioned patterns of thinking and behaving to teach ourselves to drink less. Then we practice and repeat, until our conscious brain is in charge, and we are in full control of when and how much we drink. It works. It takes time and repetition, but it works.

We use the science of learning and conditioning, the exact mechanism that caused the problem, to solve the problem. So clever. We retrain our brains so we unlearn and extinguish our desire and automatic response to alcohol. When you have less desire for a drink, you don’t have to work against yourself using willpower or force.

Whitney Roehl

PERSEVERANCE & COURAGE

We sat down with Whitney Roehl to learn how she turned pain and loneliness into a purpose-inspired business.

WHAT WAS LIFE LIKE BEFORE SELF COACHING SCHOLARS? I was feeling really lonely. I was immersed in the bar scene trying to connect with my friends, but craving a healthier lifestyle. The more I tried to become healthy the lonelier I got, because my friends were hanging out in the bars.

I tried to give up alcohol for six months before Self Coaching Scholars but then my sugar and food binges skyrocketed. I was starting a business, FitBar, which required me to be fit and here I was gaining more and more weight! I was feeling defeated in my business and in my life.

I would go to coffee shops and try to connect with people but it was hard. Through research, I learned that loneliness is a growing epidemic in our culture. We are created to be social beings so there is a huge negative effect on our bodies when we feel disconnected and depressed - worse than the effects of obesity and tobacco. Technology has helped us live more alone than ever before, with many people preferring to go on Facebook than to go out and truly connect with people. When they do socialize, alcohol is the center of the evening “Where are we going to get wine?” “What bar are we going to tonight?”

From this realization came a strong desire to make a difference. What kind of solution could I come up with that’s creative and doesn’t center on alcohol? I first tried to bring a healthier experience to the bar scene by having fitness classes

in bars and hosting a Happy Hour afterward. It’s not surprising that this first setting and business plan failed as it only fueled my own alcohol use.

I wanted to find a solution to the problem of loneliness that did not center on alcohol. So I took the program out of the bars and into salons and coffee shops. It was hard getting places on board and I quit the business for the time being.

WHY DID YOU JOIN SELF COACHING SCHOLARS?I was in my bed in a fetal position, sobbing, when I got a text from a friend telling me about Brooke’s podcast. I took that as a sign that maybe I should look into this. I started studying Brooke’s teachings, playing the podcasts over and over and listening to the tools on how to become an emotional adult vs. an emotional child.

Brooke’s work was so powerful. When she would talk about eating and buffering, I could see why the fitness and social concept was not coming together. Because of my inability to manage my emotions, I was constantly feeling pulled into the false pleasure of food and alcohol. I wanted instant gratification because I didn’t know how to tune into my feelings and deal with them.

During this time I met Jake. We would both listen to The Life Coach School podcasts and talk about the topics afterward. It was a huge part of our relationship. He even reached out to Brooke and asked if he could propose to me on one of her podcasts. So this time last year, he played her podcast on the beach and got down on one knee!! (Podcast 150, The Proposal).

We got engaged and began dreaming of our life together, but

Left: Now able to cope with any emotion, Whitney feels empowered and incredibly free. Others are noticing the affect too, and want to know the secret to her happiness.

we were scared. I was having breakthroughs but still feeling kind of stuck. When Brooke revealed that she was starting Self Coaching Scholars, saying she would teach us everything she knows, I decided to join and have been getting so much value from it ever since. My life has changed tremendously.

WHAT WAS YOUR EXPERIENCE OF SELF COACHING SCHOLARS LIKE FOR YOU?During the first month, I asked for coaching on the Live Coaching call with Brooke and asked if I should quit the 9-5 job I had taken after the first version of FitBar failed. I really wanted to pursue my dreams, but I didn’t think I could be successful and I didn’t want to fail again. She said “Do it” and gave me a belief in myself, along with the proper tools that I needed to be successful.

In February I got married, became a stepmom, moved away from my church and support communities, quit my 9-5 job, and recommitted myself to working on FitBar full time. It was an exciting and scary time. I knew that I was bettering my life, but my default thinking kept me in doubt and fear. I thought to myself “If FitBar failed in the past, how I could make it excel in the future?” Brooke helped me create a new belief, separating my past and looking into my future for all possibilities.

In May, my husband made a bold move and quit his job as a high school teacher of 20 years to become my full time business partner. It was a bit nerve wracking but, through the use of the model, tools, and coaching, we have seen such positive results. I wake up every day in disbelief that Jake and I get to work together. We are

putting our blood, sweat, and tears into something that excites and inspires us.

WHAT SURPRISED YOU ABOUT THE PROGRAM? This past summer, Brooke led a month long course on letting go of your past. This was some of the most painful work I have ever done because I had been abused as a child and it was holding me back in my work. On a Live Coaching call, I asked “Brooke, these terrible things happened to me. How can you say it doesn’t ‘affect me now?” She explained “No that’s your thought about the circumstance. The circumstance is neutral.” I realized I was no longer a helpless child. I could stop being a victim. This helped me break through my past and focus on what I want my future to look like.

Many good things have changed in my life these past few months. One of them is that I’ve lost 40 pounds. More importantly, I lost the obsession of worrying about my weight and have stopped using food for comfort.

Now I can cope with any emotion without relying on any kind of false pleasure. It’s powerful and so incredibly freeing. People are contacting me on social media saying “What are you doing? You look so happy?”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?We have evolved the FitBar concept into a community of people who want to be healthy and connect with each other. Through research, we learned that motion and sweating lead to connection. When you work out, you bond with people. In most gyms, people run out after class – at FitBar, we allow time and space for clients to make meaningful friendships and socialize after our classes. We want people to feel healthy, happy and connected. The concept is catching on and people are really enjoying our program. We are too!

MONEY It can feel like tricky business. You can find yourself confused and overwhelmed. The thought of it

can even bring up feelings of guilt and shame. These thoughts and feelings are not helpful, nor will they get you out of your current money predicament.

In Scholars, we know the role money plays in our lives. We know how money works and how to create the results we want. Because we know why we are where we are. We have complete control over our money—and our results.

EARNING It’s easy to think getting paid for our time is a logical way to earn money. We go to work, stay at that job

for a certain number of hours each week, and in exchange, we get paid. Even when self-employed, it’s easy to fall into the trap of time and effort for money. But to what end?

In Scholars, we know how to value our contribution to the world. We know how to receive from others, openly and with a heart of abundance. And we know how to take 100% responsibility for our own money results.

Money brings up a lot of emotion for many of us - Scholars know that this is caused by your thoughts and beliefs about money, and how to change those to create abundance in your life.

HOW WE SOLVE

money problemsin Scholars

DEBT It’s easy to get caught in the trap of feeling embarrassed about your debt, even feeling guilt

and shame. In Scholars, we know how to analyze the value of

debt and whether we are creating a net negative or net positive result with it. We know the steps to get out of debt. And we know if those steps are part of the right plan or if there is wisdom in utilizing that debt to leverage us to bigger and better results.

SPENDING It’s easy to overspend. And it’s easy to use spending as a distraction and a way to feel better.

In Scholars, we know why spending less does not solve the problem, and can even make it worse. Plus we know how the trap of thinking “I can’t afford it” harms us, and how to get out of that trap. We know what spending fuel is and how to leverage it in our lives.

When contemplating money issues, you can get caught in what you think is impossible and what is not going to work. But in Scholars, we learn how to create real solutions to real money problems that will indeed actually work.

When you join Self Coaching Scholars and take our money course, really doing the assignments and being open to the results, we are confident you will say, “I have earned, saved, and created so much money in my life!” So what are you waiting for?

“I HAD A LOT OF “I SHOULD HAVE...” FEELINGS AROUND FINANCIAL DECISIONS, BUT NOW I’M MOVING FORWARD BY NOT LIVING IN THE PAST AND TAKING THOSE LEARNINGS INTO THE FUTURE.” JEN AQUINO, 44, Ingredient Specialist/Food Scientist

RISING STRONGReflecting and re-evaluating after a tragedy.

“NOW, I MEASURE MY SUCCESS IN

TERMS OF HOW I SHOW UP.”

When I discovered Brooke’s podcasts, I was going through a lot of changes in my life. She was able to summarize and simplify concepts in a way that made sense to me. I could understand

the struggles I was having and learned better ways to deal with them. This helped me through my divorce and remarriage. So, when Brooke announced that Self Coaching Scholars was starting, I jumped in. I awaited podcasts on Thursdays with bated breath and looked forward to the classes.

BUT, I NEVER IMAGINED USING THE SELF COACHING SCHOLAR TOOLS FOR THISI worked the program, and life had become pretty wonderful on all fronts. Then in August of last year, out of nowhere, tragedy struck. My husband, Hugo, died in a car crash. We had been so happy. As I look back on how far I came since the accident, I truly don’t know what I would have done without Self Coaching Scholars. The program gave me the tools I needed to cope with this shocking and devastating circumstance.

First, I allowed myself to grieve and went back to my therapist to deeply process my feelings. I continued in Scholars, and took two months off from work for mourning and letting myself feel my emotions. Then I got my bearings and got to work. In the past, I would have seen this tragedy as “My life is over,” but now that I was using The Model, my thoughts became “this is just the way of life. things happen, and it may not be what you like.

You have the cards you are dealt and you have to decide how you want to play them.”

When something like this happens, you reflect on it and re-evaluate your life. I started to question my plans for the future. “Now what? What’s important to me? Where is my life going? Where do I want it to go? How am I showing up in the world? I am 40. If there is ever a time to do what I want and fix the areas of my life that I want to fix, it’s now. Life is short and nothing is guaranteed.” I felt that I was in the midst of change and that even more change was on the horizon. I was open to it.

I was thinking of going into a therapy Master’s program because therapy had been very helpful in my life. Even at work, I was the one that people came to when they had problems and wanted to talk. I never thought I wanted to be a coach. In the past, I had been skeptical about life coaching. I questioned how seriously to take the work. I didn’t understand what coaching was before this program.

I enrolled in the therapy Master’s program, but the more I learned how to coach myself and the more I participated in Scholars, the more I realized that coaching

28 29SELF COACHING SCHOLARS

was my true purpose. Of course, I still believe that there is a place for therapy, but what life coaching has offered me as a client is completely different than therapy, and I wanted to give that to other people.

I considered whether a traditional therapy practice would be a safer career path than life coaching. I questioned if people would think I was crazy for leaving a well-paying job to become a life coach. When we got to the question in Self Coaching Scholars “If I could choose between these two things and knew I couldn’t fail, which path would I choose?” I was finally clear about choosing life coaching! I realized I had been limiting myself in fear and self-doubt. I knew these feelings were self-coachable, and that I could deal with them. I withdrew from the master’s degree program and am pursuing my coach training!

POWER TOOLSI love the tools and skills I’ve learned through this program. When you understand The Model and you see that the answer you are looking for always lies in your thoughts, it’s such a game changer!

Brooke teaches us that “Half of life is supposed to be negative.” Before Self Coaching Scholars, I spent a long time looking at my circumstances and thinking “I should always be happy”. I have read countless books on how to

truly experience fear. When you open yourself up to fear, it feels different than what you expect. It turns out that skydiving actually feels peaceful – scary, but peaceful!

AND, THE BONUSES JUST KEEP COMINGI used the tools in Scholars for weight loss, too. I can’t believe I’m now a size 4! I made a decision to eliminate sugar and flour, and the weight fell off. I did intermittent fasting and I stopped eating anything processed. The best part of it is that all the mental chatter about food and weight stopped and freed up mental space and time that I can use in other areas of my life.

My relationships have improved too. What I learned is that other people don’t have to change in order for me to feel happy. Now, I measure my success in terms of how I show up. I can still love others even if they do nothing different tomorrow than they did today. It’s all on me. This thought has enhanced my life tremendously.

I have changed so much this past year and it has inspired an exciting career path - I am so incredibly grateful for Self Coaching Scholars.

find happiness. I learned that when you resist negative feelings because you think they shouldn’t be there, you actually create negative emotions on top of negative emotions. But if you can allow the initial feelings to exist and accept that “it is what it is,” the feelings run their course and dissipate. It’s nothing to be scared of, or to run from. It’s when you don’t let yourself feel your feelings that they stay with you.

One of the things I love most in Scholars are the monthly topics. Each month the offerings get better and better. Brooke really does embrace the idea of over-delivering and blowing people’s minds! In June when we were doing an exercise called “Dare of the Day”, I decided to go skydiving. Amazing! I wanted to allow myself to

SAMANTHA CARLSEN, 38, Mom

What I had not been able to overcome with 3 years of therapy and 5 therapists, Brooke taught me in less than a month. I learned how handle emotions, examine my thoughts, create new thoughts and new results. I didn’t have to rely on anyone else to walk me through it.

Written by Michelle A. Bourque, Self Coaching Scholar

Imagine a world where you can be happy no matter what. For some of you that world would exist if you were able to lose weight, find the right mate, or land a new job. But imagine if none of those external

controls were really the source of your happiness. Why we do anything in this world is because we think it

will make us feel a certain way - so how do you learn to feel better? Let’s take the example of being thin. Right now you may be someone who thinks you will feel happy when you lose your weight. If being thin equals happiness why are there are a lot of miserable thin people in the world? The difference is that happy people are thinking thoughts that make them feel happy, no matter how much they weigh, and unhappy people are thinking thoughts that make them feel unhappy. The ideas that are going through your mind at any time are creating your feelings at that time.

Really take the time to think about this. What you decide to think will determine your feelings, because all thoughts cause your emotions. If you want to feel better, grab better thoughts. When you understand that every emotion is available to you, you begin to feel empowered, knowing you have the option to choose what serves you.

Some of you may think reaching for the cookie is what makes you feel better. Your brain is built to seek pleasure, but you know after the temporary hit ends you actually feel less joy. Nothing outside of yourself will make you feel better.

In Scholars, we learn to pay attention to what’s going on in our minds, manage our thoughts, and deliberately choose and practice thoughts that make us feel better from within.

Once you understand the difference between your mind and the external world you can choose thoughts that make you feel better every day!

Clotilde Dusoulier

HAVING ENOUGH

Paris native, French culinary author, food blogger, podcaster and tour guide, Clotilde comes to her own rescue and finds true happiness.

I consumed all of The Life Coach School podcasts in about 3 weeks’ time last year during a time of unexplained unhappiness and confusion. When I was finished listening, I had an extraordinary new

outlook on my life. This ultimately led me to join the Self Coaching Scholars program — where, I’m thrilled to report, an even more massive life shift happened.

It seemed that I had so much – a wonderful husband, truly amazing children and a growing business. I questioned myself about why I didn’t feel happier in my family life. In the past, therapy had helped me to gain a deeper understanding of the pain points in my life, but it never seemed to provide the tools to deal with the pain. I joined Scholars to do the work on a daily basis. Through it, I gained a new level of understanding and I took the necessary steps to solidify the changes.

The biggest impact from the program came in my family and professional life. My husband’s job is less flexible than mine and with two young children, there is always a dance of who does what and who carries the heaviest part of the load. I learned that I didn’t have clarity around what I wanted to do and what I needed to do for myself, my husband, and my children. I was keeping score and there was always unnecessary confusion and suffering around this. I struggled to find happiness in this situation on a day-to-day basis.

Like many women, I had unrealistic expectations of my husband to be the source my happiness. I realize now that a childhood Prince Charming fantasy may have

been impacting my ideas and expectations about love. At first, it was a disappointment to realize, “Oh wait, that’s not happening. I’m the one who is supposed to take care of my happiness.” I thought, “No! I don’t want to do all the work to make that happen.” But once I learned how to generate all of those good feelings for myself, I understood that there is really nothing I can’t do. Coming to my own rescue has been incredibly empowering!

My husband and I don’t argue anymore, which in itself is pretty life changing. Managing my time with him, my work, and our children is just no longer an issue. I know now that whatever time I take out of my work to take care of my family is completely my choice. So now when my husband comes home and I have been looking after the kids, I’m not feeling resentful.

Once I cleared all of that clutter from my brain, there was room for so much more. I started my own personal development podcast called “Change Ma Vie” (“Change My Life” in English). It took off quickly and led to a television appearance. I am more productive than ever before and I am adding more value into the world.

I’m also no longer afraid to try new things and make mistakes. I never anticipated that I would I have this sense of limitless possibility. It feels wonderful!

“I AM MORE PRODUCTIVE

THAN EVER AND I FEEL AS THOUGH I AM

ADDING MORE VALUE INTO

THE WORLD.”

Right: Clotilde learned the empowering ability to self-generate all the feelings she had been seeking outside of herself. “I understood that there is really nothing I can’t do.”

You have a good job. It’s something you say to yourself all the time. Then why do you spend so much of that precious time hoping…dreaming...planning how to become an

entrepreneur? How many pieces of paper have you scribbled on,

getting your thoughts in order to move toward your own business? How many business plans have you drafted on your trusty yellow pad while on vacation each year? And how many documents in your computer have you created as part of your plan?

And yet, you still have a job. You might even be self-employed. But it is still a job. Owning a business does not make you an entrepreneur. It’s more than that. Brooke will show you how to make the leap.

In Scholars, we learn that if you are not managing your brain, not managing what it requires of you mentally to be a true entrepreneur, you won’t make it. You know the statistics for new business owners. They’re grim. But as a Scholar, you find the leg up you have been searching for. This is not a game. This is your career. Your contribution. Your life. And your past thinking is not what will get you to your future self. In Scholars, we learn how to make the leap with our minds first.

Being an entrepreneur is not for the faint of heart. But entrepreneurship is for you if you are ready to learn how to self coach so you can do the work of your own candid and authentic brain

As an entrepreneur, if you aren’t making money, it’s because you’re not creating the right solution, the right value, for your customer (no matter who that customer is). MAKE OR BREAK

TIMEA marital crisis and a debilitating fear

prompt deep transformation.

I joined Self Coaching Scholars because I had a debilitating fear that I was going to die of cancer and my kids would have to grow up without me. Being prone to hypochondria, I had convinced

myself that I was sick. I was experiencing pains in my chest and had myself tested for everything. I even went to a psychiatrist who told me that my problem was in my mind, but then gave me no tools to deal with it. The anxiety was awful. I would go to bed at 8:00 every night exhausted and miserable.

I was lucky enough to find Self Coaching Scholars. I dove into the program and worked really hard. I explored every negative thought around my issue. It was a process and it took a good deal of work, but I was persistent. Through the program, I learned to deal with my fear by “going there and being with the exact thoughts that I was so fearful about – and to know that it could possibly be okay.” If I did die, my kids would be taken care of, and they would likely have a good life. This reassurance became my backup plan. From there, I worked forward to a better place. I went from thinking “I’m going to die” to believing and knowing that “I am 100% healthy.”

Occasionally, that old familiar sense of terror and dread comes up, but when it does, I know how to handle it. I sit with it and say to myself “If these are the worst feelings I can experience, I can live with it.” After a while, the emotions start to dissipate. Being able to do this gives me incredible confidence that spills into other areas of my life as well.

NEGATIVE THOUGHTS ALMOST SABOTAGED MY MARRIAGEAll this had been wonderful, but my biggest challenge and ultimate triumph came a few months into the course. Things were going well or so I thought, but somehow, I developed feelings for a man who was not my husband and I nearly ruined my marriage. This was very disturbing. I certainly didn’t want these feelings. And, while nothing really happened, I found myself taking his calls and even made plans to meet him out one time. My husband was really hurt and he even suggested that maybe we should go our separate ways.

On a Live Coaching call with Brooke, she asked me what the thought was that made me do this. I sat for about two hours and did a thought download. Some very negative thoughts came out. These were thoughts that I had lived with for so long, without questioning whether or not they were true. I assumed that they were facts – my negative thoughts about sex, my past experiences, my beliefs that stemmed from old relationships, and more. I became aware of anger and fear that caused me to detach and distance myself from my husband. I wrote down

everything and I cried and cried. It took a long time to get through each negative thought, but ultimately so much good came out of it.

Meanwhile, my husband and I had some conversations that were terrifying. Understandably, he had a very hard time getting past this. I had to work on myself and my thoughts about him being angry at me, knowing that he may want to separate. Finally, we decided to work on our marriage in a big and bold way. We packed up, took our kids out of school for three months, and went from Australia to America, where we could get away from everything. This was make or break time!

Our marriage has been transformed and we’ve grown stronger together. I went from seeing evidence for my husband being a bad husband to seeing that he is amazing and that he is the only man for me!

I’ve even created my own business called Cheeky Tunes Song and Dance Company, whereI create playful and empowering songs for children. It has been so much work, but it’s incredibly rewarding. I get so excited whenever I talk about it!

“BEING ABLE TO DO THIS GIVES ME INCREDIBLE CONFIDENCE. THE POWER SPILLS INTO OTHER AREAS OF MY LIFE AS WELL.”

Above: “Since joining Scholars, I am a stronger more capable woman, wife, mother, and now, entrepreneur! I have created an exciting career that balances being a mom with my creative self. I am producing and performing original children’s music.

Everyone needs a life coach.

You want to do better. You want to take action, make and keep more money, be even more successful. You want to live on purpose.

Self Coaching Scholars are rockstars.

They don’t just talk about taking action. They take action. They get results. They move forward in their lives deliberately. They lose weight, cut back on drinking, build businesses. They stop procrastinating, organize their homes. They’re less angry. They set boundaries, discover more purpose, motivation, and success.

How?

How does self coaching make this happen? First, it increases awareness. We take time to look at your life from the outside. Second, it gets emotions under control. Emotional management is imperative to make progress. Finally, it demands massive action. We insist on making commitments and following through for predictable results.

Coaching is not therapy.

We don’t explore your past or try to make sense of your childhood. We simply start where we are and move forward. It’s a future-focused, mind-blowing process.
