This appliance may be installed in an after-market permanently located, manufactured (mobile) home, where not prohibited by local codes.This appliance is only for use with the type of gas indicated on the rating plate. This fireplace is not convertible for use with other gases.

This is an unvented gas-fired heater. It uses air (oxygen) from the room in which it is installed. Provisions for adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided. Refer to pages 13 - 14.

WARNING: If not installed, operated and maintained in accordance with the manufacturer's instructions, this product could expose you to substances in fuel or from fuel combustion which can cause death or serious illness.

WATER VAPOR: A BY-PRODUCT OF UNVENTED ROOM HEATERSWater vapor is a by-product of gas combustion. An unvented room heater produces approximately one ounce (30ml) of water for every 1,000 BTU's (.3KW's) of gas input per hour. Refer to page 13.

Do not install appliance until all necessary provisions are made for combustion and ventilation air. In the absence of instructions, refer to the National Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z223.1/NFPA 54, Air for Combustion and Ventilation, or applicable local codes.

This appliance is equipped with a PILOT LIGHT SAFETY SYSTEM designed to turn off the appliance if not enough fresh air is available.

CARBON MONOXIDE POISONINg MAy LEAD TO DEATH.

Early signs of carbon monoxide poisoning resemble the flu, with headache, dizziness and/or nausea. If you have these signs, fireplace may not be working properly. Get fresh air at once! Have fireplace serviced. Some people — pregnant women, persons with heart or lung disease, anemia, those under the influence of alcohol , those at high altitudes — are more affected by carbon monoxide than others.The pilot light safety system senses the depletion of oxygen at its location. If this fireplace is installed in a structure having a high vertical dimension, the possibility exists that the oxygen supply at the higher levels will be less than that at the fireplace. In this type of application, a fan to circulate the structure air will minimize this effect. The use of this fan will also improve the comfort level in the structure. When a fan is used to circulate air, it should be located so that the air flow is not directed at the burner.

componentsofthisfireplacearetreatedwithcertainoils,filmsorbondingagents.Thesebondingagentsarenotharmfulbutmayproduceannoyingsmokeandsmellsastheyareburnedoffduringinitialoperationofthefireplace.Thisisanormaltemporaryoccurrence.Awindowshouldbeopenedduringtheinitialbakeoutperiod.

• Correctinstallationoftheoptionalceramicfiberlogs,properlocationofthefireplaceandannualcleaningarenecessarytoavoidpotentialproblemswithsooting.Sooting,resultingfromimproperinstallationoroperation,cansettleonsurfacesoutsidethefireplace.Seeinstructionsforproperinstallation.

• Keepfireplaceareaclearandfreefromcombustiblematerials,gasolineandotherflammablevaporsandliquids.

• Sooting: Avent-freefireplaceorburnerdrawsroomairtosupportcombustion.Lightweightparticlessuspendedintheair–includingdust,carpetfibers,candleortobaccosmoke,andpethair–willbedrawntowardthefireplace.Thesecanleadtosootbuilduponlogs,fireplacewalls,andevenwallsoftheroom.Topreventmalfunctionsandsooting,haveyourdealerperformaninspectionandcleaningeachyear–beforetheheatingseason.Ifyouhavepetsorexcessivedust,morefrequentcleaningmaybenecessary.Seecleaningandservicesectioninthismanual.

• UseNon-CombustibleMaterialswhereindicatedforthefireplaceinstallation.Non-combustiblematerialdonotigniteorburnasaresultofusingthefireplace.Theseincludemetal,brick,ceramic,concrete,slate,glass,andplaster.Adhesivesmustberatedforhightemperatures.Anymechanicalfastenersusedtoinstallmaterialmustalsobenon-combustible,includingwallanchorsandtilespacers.MaterialsthatpasstheASTME136test(StandardTestMethodforBehaviorofMaterialsinaVerticalTubeFurnaceat750C)areconsiderednon-combustible.

• DonotallowCombustibleMaterialsadjacenttoorincontactwiththefireplaceorventing.Combustiblematerialsincludewood,compressedpaper,plantfibers,orothermaterialsthatwillburn.Thesematerialsareconsideredcombustibleevenwhentreatedwithfire-retardantchemicals.

• Properinstallation,burnerpanlocationandlogplacementisimportanttoachieveoptimumlookandperformanceofyourfireplace.Thelogshavebeendesignedforeasylocationandplacementonthelogplateandmustbefollowedforproperoperation.

• Donotplaceembers(rockwool)inthisfireplace.• Donotplacelavarocksonburnerorlogs.• Avoidanydraftsthatalterburnerflamepatterns.Donot

allowfanstoblowdirectlyintofireplace.Donotplaceablowerinsidetheburnerareaofthefirebox.Ceilingfansmaycreatedraftsthatalterflamepatterns.Sootingandimproperburningwillresult.

• Installingatelevisionaboveafireplacehasbecomeadesirablefeature;however,thefollowinginformationshouldbeconsidered. Allfireplaces,whetherdecorativeorheaterratedcreateheat.Mosttelevisionmanufacturersrecommendnotplacingatelevisionnearaheatsource.Becausethereisalargevarietyoftelevisionmanufactures,stylesandsizes,itisimpracticaltotesteverypotentialinstallation.Ifyouchoosetoinstallatelevisionaboveornearyourfireplace,understandthatEmpireComfortSystemsacceptsnoresponsibilityforthisdecisionandanyinjuryordamageduetothisapplicationisthesoleresponsibilityoftheowner.Additionally,itishighlyrecommendedtoturnoffthefireplaceandletitcooldownbeforeservicingorusingtheoperationalbuttonslocatedonthetelevision.Inallcases,thetelevisionmanufacturer’sinstructionsandwarningsshouldbefollowed.

LP-GAS WARNING ODOR

If a gas leak happens, you should be able to smell the gas because of the odorant put in the LP-Gas.

That's your signal to go into immediate action!

• Donotoperateelectricswitches,lightmatches,useyourphone.Donotdoanythingthatcouldignitethegas.

• Geteveryoneoutofthebuilding,vehicle,trailer,orarea.DothatIMMEDIATELY.

• Closeallgastankorcylindersupplyvalves.

• LP-Gasisheavierthanairandmaysettleinlowareassuchasbasements.Whenyouhavereasontosuspectagasleak,keepoutofbasementsandotherlowareas.Stayoutuntilfirefightersdeclarethemtobesafe.

• Useyourneighbor’sphoneandcallatrainedLP-Gasservicepersonandthefiredepartment.Eventhoughyoumaynotcontinuetosmellgas,donotturnonthegasagain.Donotre-enterthebuilding,vehicle,trailer,orarea.

• Finally, lettheservicemanandfirefighterscheckforescapedgas.Havethemairouttheareabeforeyoureturn.ProperlytrainedLP-Gasservicepeopleshouldrepairtheleak,thencheckandrelightthegasfireplaceforyou.

NO ODOR DETECTED - ODOR FADESome people cannot smell well. Some people cannot smell the odor of the chemical put into the gas. you must find out if you can smell the odorant in propane.Smokingcandecreaseyourabilitytosmell.Beingaroundanodorforatimecanaffectyoursensitivityorabilitytodetectthatodor.Sometimesotherodorsintheareamaskthegasodor.Peoplemaynotsmellthegasodorortheirmindsareonsomethingelse.Thinkingaboutsmellingagasodorcanmakeiteasiertosmell.

The odorant in LP-gas is colorless, and it can fade under some circumstances. Forexample,ifthereisanundergroundleak,themovementofthegasthroughsoilcanfiltertheodorant.OdorantsinLP-Gasalsoaresubjecttooxidation.Thisfadingcanoccurifthereisrustinsidethestoragetankorinirongaspipes.

Theodorantinescapedgascanadsorborabsorbontoorintowalls,masonryandothermaterialsandfabricsinaroom.Thatwilltakesomeoftheodorantoutofthegas,reducingitsodorintensity.

LP-Gasmaystratifyinaclosedarea,andtheodorintensitycouldvaryatdifferentlevels.Sinceitisheavierthanair,theremaybemoreodoratlowerlevels.Alwaysbesensitivetotheslightestgasodor.Ifyoudetectanyodor,treatitasaseriousleak.Immediatelygointoactionasinstructedearlier.

SOME POINTS TO REMEMBER• LearntorecognizetheodorofLP-gas.YourlocalLP-Gas

Dealercangiveyoua“ScratchandSniff”pamphlet.Useittofindoutwhatthepropaneodorsmellslike.IfyoususpectthatyourLP-Gashasaweakorabnormalodor,callyourLP-GasDealer.

• Ifyouarenotqualified,donotlightpilotlights,performservice,ormakeadjustmentstofireplacesontheLP-Gassystem.Ifyouarequalified,consciouslythinkabouttheodorofLP-Gaspriortoandwhilelightingpilotlightsorperformingserviceormakingadjustments.

• Sometimesabasementoraclosed-uphousehasamustysmellthatcancoveruptheLP-Gasodor.Donottrytolightpilotlights,performservice,ormakeadjustmentsinanareawheretheconditionsaresuchthatyoumaynotdetecttheodoriftherehasbeenaleakofLP-Gas.

• Odorfade,duetooxidationbyrustoradsorptiononwallsofnewcylindersandtanks,ispossible.Therefore,peopleshouldbeparticularlyalertandcarefulwhennewtanksorcylindersareplacedinservice.Odorfadecanoccurinnewtanks,orreinstalledoldtanks,iftheyarefilledandallowedtosettoolongbeforerefilling.Cylindersandtankswhichhavebeenoutofserviceforatimemaydevelopinternalrustwhichwillcauseodorfade.Ifsuchconditionsaresuspectedtoexist,aperiodicsnifftestofthegasisadvisable. If you have any question about the gas odor, call your LP-gas dealer. A periodic sniff test of the LP-gas is a good safety measure under any condition.

• If,atanytime,youdonotsmelltheLP-Gasodorantandyouthinkyoushould,assumeyouhavealeak.ThentakethesameimmediateactionrecommendedabovefortheoccasionwhenyoudodetecttheodorizedLP-Gas.

• Ifyouexperienceacomplete“gasout,”(thecontainerisundernovaporpressure),turnthetankvalveoffimmediately.Ifthecontainervalveislefton,thecontainermaydrawinsomeairthroughopeningssuchaspilotlightorifices.Ifthisoccurs,somenewinternalrustingcouldoccur.Ifthevalveisleftopen,thentreatthecontainerasanewtank.Alwaysbesureyourcontainerisundervaporpressurebyturningitoffatthecontainerbeforeitgoescompletelyemptyorhavingitrefilledbeforeitiscompletelyempty.

Proper Primary Airflow into BurnerForproperburneroperationandflameappearance,theflowofprimaryairintotheventuritube,locatedatthegasinletoftheburner,mustnotbereduced.Thisflowofairisreducedifdirt,lintorotherobstructionsbuild-uparoundorinsidetheventuri.Anyobstructionintheventuritubeareamustberemoved.Theflowofairintotheventuriisalsoreducedifthegasorificeisn’tcenteredintheventuriinletand/orisnotalignedwiththeventuri.Anymisalignmentoftheburnerorificemaybecorrectedbybendingtheshuttercapholdingtheorificetotheinletoftheventuritube.

Ceiling Fans, Portable Fans or Logs Installed Near Cold Air ReturnsCeilingfansoroscillatingfloortypefansneedtobemonitoredduringtheoperationofvent-freefireplace.Iftheairblowsdirectlyintotheflamecausingittodisrupttheflame,itshouldbeturnedofforredirected.Ceilingfanscouldbereversedtopossiblyeliminateflameimpingement,andthefloorfanshouldberedirected.Uponinstallation,beawareofanycoldairreturnsorventsintheproximityofthefireplace.Anydraftcreatedaroundavent-freefireplacecancausetheflametoimpingeonthelogandcreateasootingsituation.

WARNINGDonotallowfanstoblowdirectlyintothefireplace.Avoidanydraftsthatalterburnerflamepatterns.

CandlesAvoidtheuseofscentedordecorativecandleswhilethefireplaceisinoperation.Candlesproducearesidueintheairthatcreatesasootlikesubstance.Burningcandleswhilethefireplaceisoperatingmagnifiestheproblem.Itshouldbenotedthatcandles,ingeneral,producesoot.Theamountoftimeburnedandthequantityofcandlesburnedwilldeterminetheamountofsootproducedanddeposited.

Plug-In Air FreshenersAvoidtheuseofscentedairfreshenerswhilethefireplaceisinoperation.Airfreshenersproducearesidueintheairsimilartocandlesandmayproduceasootlikesubstance.

Television ConsiderationsInstallingatelevisionaboveafireplacehasbecomeincreasinglypopular;however,theareaaboveanyfireplacegetshotandmostTVmanufacturersrecommendagainstplacingtheirproductsnearaheatsource.Ifyouinstallatelevisionabovethisfireplace,EmpireComfortSystemsacceptsnoresponsibilityfordamageorinjuries.Followthetelevisionmanufacturer’sinstallationinstructions,includinganyrecommendationsregardingproximitytoheatsources.IfyouhaveaTVaboveyourfireplace,turnoffthefireplaceandletitcoolcompletelybeforeservicingortouchinganybuttonsontheTV.

Watervaporisaby-productofgascombustion.Anunventedroomheaterproducesapproximatelyoneounce(30ml)ofwaterforevery1,000BTU's(.3KW's)ofgasinputperhour.Unventedroomheatersarerecommendedassupplementalheat(aroom)ratherthanaprimaryheatsource(anentirehouse).Inmostsupplementalheatapplications,thewatervapordoesnotcreateaproblem.Inmostapplications,thewatervaporenhancesthelowhumidityatmosphereexperiencedduringcoldweather.

Thefollowingstepswillhelpinsurethatwatervapordoesnotbecomeaproblem.1. Besuretheheaterissizedproperlyfortheapplication,includ-

ingamplecombustionairandcirculationair.2. Ifhighhumidityisexperienced,adehumidifiermaybeusedto

helplowerthewatervaporcontentoftheair.3. Donotuseanunventedroomheaterastheprimaryheat

source.

ThisheatershallnotbeinstalledinaroomorspaceunlesstherequiredvolumeofindoorcombustionairisprovidedbythemethoddescribedintheNational Fuel Gas Code, ANSI Z23.1/NFPA 54, the International Fuel Gas Code,orapplicablelocalcodes.

Installation in a Confined SpaceAconfinedspaceisanareawithvolumelessthan50cubicfeetper1,000Btuhofthecombinedinputratesofallfireplacesdrawingcombustionairfromthatspace.Smallareassuchasequipmentroomsareconfinedspaces.Furnacesinstalledinaconfinedspacewhichsupplyheatedairtoareasoutsidethespacemustdrawreturnairfromoutsidethespacethroughtightlysealedreturnairducts.Aconfinedspacemusthave2openingsintothespaceforcombustionair.Oneopeningmustbewithin12inchesoftheceilingandtheothermustbewithin12inchesofthefloor.Therequiredsizingoftheseopeningsisdeterminedbywhetherinsideoroutsideairisusedtosupportcombustion,themethodbywhichtheairisbroughttothespace(verticalorhorizontalduct)andbythetotalinputrateofallfireplacesinthespace.

Unusually Tight ConstructionTheairthatleaksarounddoorsandwindowsmayprovideenoughfreshairforcombustionandventilation.However,inbuildingsofunusuallytightconstruction,youmustprovideadditional fresh air. Unusually tight construction is defined as construction

where:a. Wallsandceilingsexposedtotheoutsideatmosphere

haveacontinuouswatervaporretarderwitharatingofonepermorlesswithopeningsgasketedorsealed,and

b. Weather-strippinghasbeenaddedonopenablewindowsanddoors,and

c. Caulkingorsealantsareappliedtoareassuchasjointsaroundwindowanddoorframes,betweensoleplatesandfloors,betweenwall-ceilingjoints,betweenwallpanels,atpenetrationsforplumbing,electrical,andgaslines,andatother openings.

Ifyourhomemeetsallofthethreecriteriaabove,youmustprovide additional fresh air. See “Ventilation Air From Outdoors,” page 14.

Determining if you Have a Confined or Unconfined SpaceUsethisworksheettodetermineifyouhaveaconfinedorunconfinedspace.Space:Includestheroominwhichyouwillinstallfireplaceplusanyadjoiningroomswithdoorlesspassagewaysorventilationgrillsbetweentherooms.

Donotconnectanygasvalveorelectronicmoduledirectlyto110-120VACpower.Consultgasfireplacemanufacturer’sinstructionsandwiringschematicsforproperplacementofallwires.Allelectronicmodulesaretobewiredtomanufacturer’sspecifications.

Thefollowingwiringdiagramsareforillustrationpurposeonly.Followinstructionsfrommanufacturerofgasvalveand/orelectronicmoduleforcorrectwiringprocedures.Improperinstallationofelectriccomponentscancausedamagetoelectronicmodule,gasvalveandremotereceiver.

Theremotereceivercanbeeitherwall-mountedinastandardplasticswitchboxorplacedonornearthefireplacehearth.Preferably,theremotereceivershouldbewall-mountedinaplasticswitchbox,asthiswillprotectitselectroniccomponentsfromboththeheatproducedbythegasfireplaceandpotentialdamageorabusethatcanoccurifitisleftexposedonthehearth.PROTECTIONFROMEXTREMEHEATISVERYIMPORTANT.Likeanypieceofelectronicequipment,theremotereceivershouldbekeptawayfromtemperaturesexceeding130° F inside thereceivercase.Batterylifeisalsosignificantlyshortenedifbatteriesareexposedtohightemperatures.MakesuretheremotereceiverswitchisintheOFFposition.Itisrecommendedthat18gaugesolidorstrandedwires(notincluded)beusedtomakeconnectionsbetweentheterminalwiringblockonthemillivoltgasvalveorelectronicmoduleandthewireterminalsontheremotereceiver.Forthebestresults,use18gaugesolidorstrandedwire,withnosplicesandmeasuringnolongerthan20ft.

WIRING INSTRUCTIONSAqualifiedelectricianoragastechnicianwhoisfamiliarwiththegasfireplaceandgasvalvesthatwillbeoperatedbythisremoteshouldinstalltheremotecontrolsystem.IncorrectwiringconnectionsWILLcausedamagetothegasvalveorelectronicmoduleoperatingthegasfireplaceandmayalsodamagetheremotereceiver.

WIRING MILLIVOLT VALVESTheremotereceiverisconnectedtothemillivoltvalveusingtheTH(thermostat)terminalsontheterminalblockonthemillivoltgas valve.Connect18gaugesolidorstrandedwiresfromtheremotereceivertothegasvalve.

Operationoftheremotereceiverissimilartothatofathermostatinthatbothturnthegasvalveonandoffbasedoninputsignals.Athermostat’sinputsignalsaredifferenttemperatures.Theremotereceiver’sinputsignalscomefromthetransmitter.

ConnecteachofthetwowiresleadingfromtheTHterminalsonthe millivolt gas valve to either of the two wire terminals on the remotereceiver.Normallyitdoesnotmatterwhichwiresgotowhichterminal.

GENERAL INFORMATIONMATCHING SECURITY CODESEachtransmittercanuseoneof255uniquesecuritycodes.ItmaybenecessarytoprogramtheremotereceivertoLEARNthesecuritycodeofthetransmitteruponinitialuse,ifbatteriesarereplaced,orifareplacementtransmitterispurchasedfromyourdealerorthefactory.Whenmatchingsecuritycodes,besureslidebuttononthereceiverisintheREMOTEposition;thecodewillNOT“LEARN”iftheslideswitchisintheONorOFFposition.ProgramtheremotereceivertoLEARNanewsecuritycodebypushingandreleasingthelearnbutton.Asingle"beep"willsound.Pressthe"ON"buttonontheremotecontrol,untilthree"beeps"sound.Thethree"beeps"arethesignalthatthereceiverhaslearnedthenewcode.Whenanexistingreceiverismatchedtoanewtransmitter,thenewsecuritycodewilloverridetheoldone.Themicroprocessorthatcontrolsthesecuritycodematchingprocedureiscontrolledbyatimingfunction.Ifyouareunsuccessfulinmatchingthesecuritycodeonthefirstattempt,wait1-2minutesbeforetryingagain–thisdelayallowsthemicroprocessortoresetitstimercircuitry–andtryuptotwoorthree more times.

BATTERY LIFELifeexpectancyofthealkalinebatteriesislongerandperformancebetterthanotherbatteries.Checkandreplaceallbatteriesannually.Whenthetransmitternolongeroperatestheremotereceiverfromadistanceitdidpreviously(i.e.,thetransmitter’srangehasdecreased)ortheremotereceiverdoesnotfunctionatall,thebatteriesshouldbechecked.Itisimportantthattheremotereceiverbatteriesarefullychargedandprovidescontinuousoutputvoltageofaleast5.3volts.Thelengthofthewirebetweentheremotereceiverandgasvalvedirectlyaffectstheoperatingperformanceoftheremotesystem.Thelongerthewire,themorebatterypowerisrequiredtodeliversignalsbetweentheremotereceiverandthegasvalve.Recommendedlengthisnolongerthan20feet.Thetransmittershouldoperatewithaslittleas5.0voltsbatterypower.

TROUBLE SHOOTINGIfyouencounterproblemswithyourfireplacesystem,theproblemmaybewiththefireplaceitselforitcouldbewiththeECSremote.Reviewthefireplacemanufacturer’soperationmanualtomakesureallconnectionsareproperlymade.ThenchecktheoperationoftheECSremoteinthefollowingmanner:• Makesurethebatteriesarecorrectlyinstalledinthe

RECEIVER.Onereversedbatterywillkeepreceiverfromoperating properly.

• CheckbatteryinTransmittertomakesurecontactsaretouching(+)and(-)endsofbattery.Bendmetalcontactsinfortighterfit.

• BesureRECEIVERandTransmitterarewithin20’-25’operating range.

• KeepRECEIVERfromtemperaturesexceeding130° F. Batterylifeshortenedwhenambienttemperaturesareabove130° F.

• IfRECEIVERisinstalledintightlyenclosedmetalsurround,theoperatingdistancewillbeshortened.

Theelectroniccontrolvalvesystemincludestheabilitytoswitchthe pilot from a standing pilot mode to an intermittent pilot mode.

• IP Mode-IntheIntermittentPilotmode,whentheunitisturnedON,itwillcausesparktothepilot,lightthepilot,thenallowtheburnertolight.WhentheunitisturnedtoOFF,boththeburnerandpilotwillbeOFF.

• CPI Mode-IntheContinuousPilotmode,thepilotremainsONcontinuouslyevenwhentheburneristurnedOFF.

NOTE:AsmalltoggleswitchislocatedonabracketthatisusedtoswitchfromIP(upwardposition)totheCPI(downwardposition).See Figure 73.

WhentheunitisturnedtoON,theelectricalcurrentwillenergizeasparktothepilotigniter.Oncethepilotsensorheatsup(afterafewseconds),thevalvewillbeenergized,allowinggastoflowtotheburner.

at ignition between the EV1 terminal and the ground connection on the valve body.

5.1 If the voltage is greater than 0 then Replace Valve.

6. Check the pressure at the outlet pressure test point out according to the manufacturer’s

instruction. If not in accordance, replace the gas valve.

1. Verify the electrical connections’ integrity and make sure they are in accordance with the

relevant system wiring diagram. If necessary replace the wire harness.

3. With the system in the OFF position, connect the voltmeter between the EV2 terminal

(green base) on the valve, and the ground on the valve body.

Turn the system ON, let pilot light, and observe the following voltage sequence: once the pilot

flame is proved, the voltage on EV2 should spike to approx. 5 VdC for approx. 2 sec and then

drop to approx. 0.6 VdC continuously.

3.1 If the sequence is respected, replace the gas valve.

3.2 If the sequence is not respected, replace the DFC board.

1. Replace the main burner orifice with a new orifice of correct size (partial blockage possible).

Verify that the main burner flame modulates. If it does not modulate replace the gas valve.

2. Verify that the gas valve outlet pressure limits are in accordance with the manufacturer

specifications. If not replace the gas valve.

3. Verify the flame changes while rotating the HI/LO knob on the front of the gas valve. If there

is no change replace the gas valve.
