The Coat of Armsof the Most Reverend Michael O. Jackels, S.T.D.

The left half of the shield is adapted from the crest of the Archdiocese of Dubuque which tells much of the history of the Catholic heritage in this part of Iowa.

The wavy diagonal band represents the Missis-sippi River down which the French missionaries traveled in the 17th century. Bishop Matthias Lo-ras, the first Bishop of Dubuque, traveled up the Father of Waters to his new diocese in 1839.

In the vineyard of Christ, the fields of Iowa, “white for the harvest” (Gos-pel of St. John, chapter 4, verse 35), are symbolized by the white background. Religious pioneers planted the Cross of the Chris-tian Faith depicted by the two crosses on either side of the band.

The fleurs-de-lis, or French lil-ies, have a triple significance. They refer to the Three Per-sons of the Blessed Trinity, Fa-ther, Son and Holy Spirit. The French form of the lily repre-sents the early French mission-aries who came to the territory of Dubuque. They also stand for Bishop Loras, born in Lyons, France, one of the most ancient centers of European Christian-ity.

The official colors of the shield are red (the cross-es), white (the background) and blue (the diago-nal band), the colors of the Loras family arms and those of the flag of the United States of America.

The right half of the shield is adapted from the coat of arms Archbishop Jackels used after being ordained a bishop.

St. Michael the Archangel is taken from the crest for the city of Kiev in Ukraine. In addition

to being the patron saint of Archbishop Jack-els, the image represents his mother’s fam-ily, the Mettlers, who are Volga Germans. The unicorn is taken from the coat of arms for the Jackels’ family in Nuremberg, Germany, and was chosen to represent his father’s family.

When read from left to right, Archbishop Jack-els’ coat of arms declares “ecce adsum” – here I am, Michael Jackels – announcing his name to the people God has called him to serve.

The motto “ecce adsum” also recalls the right and true an-swer given by so many to the manifest will of the Father: by Samuel when called to serve as his prophet, “Here I am, for you called me” (1 Samuel 3:5); by the Virgin Mary to the call to be the Mother of Jesus, the Son of God, “Here am I, the servant of the Lord: let it be with me according to your word” (Luke 1:38); and by Jesus in Gethsemane, at the beginning of his Passion, “Fa-ther, if you are willing, remove this cup from me, yet not my will but yours be done” (Luke 22:42).

The same words – “ecce ad-sum” – were spoken by God to the people of Israel, promising to come to their aid: “You shall

call, and the Lord will answer; you shall cry for help, and he will say, Here I am” (Isaiah 58:9).

The motto “ecce adsum” is a declaration of Arch-bishop Jackels’ cheerful trust in the promise of God to be present and to provide all needed strength, wisdom and goodness, believing that God will meet misery with mercy. It also gives voice to his ready surrender, born of trust, seeing God’s will as a good thing given by a loving Fa-ther to a child he loves, and so, not only accepting it, but cooperating with it, even desiring it, say-ing “I thirst!” in imitation of Jesus on the Cross.

We thank the Archbishops, Bishops and Archbishop Jackels’ family and friends for joining us today to pray for and with Archbishop Jackels. We thank all those involved with the liturgy: those who served as deacons, servers, readers, representatives of the community, ushers, ministers of hospitality, and masters of ceremony, for their service today. We thank the Archdiocesan Chorale, Clarke University brass and our organist and pianist for providing the music for this celebration. We thank the City of Dubuque Police and security guards and others who provided safety and security for this event. We thank the offices of the Archdiocesan Pastoral Center who tended to the many details of this Mass and to the celebrations surrounding the installation of Archbishop Jackels. We thank the Knights of Columbus for providing drivers for some of our visiting guests.
