1. Installing Updated ELAN Track Pad Drivers for Y510P

This guide explains how to install updated drivers for the ELAN track pad in the Lenovo Y510P. If your laptop uses a Synaptics track pad, do NOT install these drivers. Installing these drivers correctly is complicated but once you are done, you will finally have a track pad that works the way a track pad is supposed to work.

Step 1 - Go to the Control Panel, open up the Device Manager, double click on the Mice and other pointing devices, double click on the Lenovo pointing device and verify that you have an ELAN track pad installed. The Driver tab should show that your Driver Provider is ELAN.

If you have an ELAN track pad then exit that window and download the appropriate drivers.

The exe files are in a 7 Zip self extracting format to minimize their size. Double click on the exe file to unzip these drivers and save the folder somewhere convenient like in your Downloads folder or on your Desktop.

Step 2 - In the Device Manager click once on Lenovo pointing device to highlight it and then select the Uninstall icon at the far right end.

Step 4 - After you reboot, open up the Task Manager. In the Processes tab, highlight ETD Control Center and then click on the End Task button. Highlight Elan Service and push the End Task button again. Now you need to edit the Registry and you need to remove 3 folders where all of the previous ELAN settings are stored. If you do not delete these folders, some of the features in these new ELAN drivers will not work correctly. Do a Windows search for regedit and open the Registry Editor program.

The easiest way to find the folders that need to be deleted is to let Registry Editor search for them. Select the top item, Computer, and then click on the Edit menu option and select Find... Type in Elantech, select the Keys option and then select the Match whole string only option. Now push the Find Next button.

Step 5 - At the bottom of the Registry Editor window it will tell you what folder it found. It should show Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech

That is the folder that you need to delete.

Right mouse click on the Elantech folder and select the Delete option. You can also highlight this folder and press the Delete key on your keyboard.

Once this folder is deleted, press the F3 function key to find the next folder that needs to be deleted. The next folder should be Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Elantech

Delete that folder using the same method.

Step 6 - Press F3 several more times until you get to this folder, Computer\HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\ControlSet001\Control\Elantech

Delete this folder and you are finished editing the registry so you can exit the Registry Editor program.

Now you need to open up the Windows file explorer and delete the C:\Program Files\Elantech folder. You have finished the difficult part of this installation and have finally removed all of the previous Lenovo track pad driver from your system. You are ready to begin installing a new ELAN driver for the track pad.

Step 7 - Open up the Device Manager again, go to Mice and other pointing devices, double click to open that and then highlight the PS/2 Compatible Mouse and select the Update Driver Software icon.

Step 15 - A screen will pop up that says Update Driver Warning. It is basically telling you that the drivers you are installing were not originally written specifically for the Lenovo Y510P but we already know that so click on the Yes button to proceed.

Step 16 - If everything went well you should see the Windows has successfully updated your driver software screen. Make sure this screen shows the correct driver.

Step 19 - At long last you can go to the Notification Area - System Tray and open up the new ELAN Control Center software. You will find an assortment of new features and items that you can adjust. The most important feature for the Y510P laptop is called Smart Area. This lets you set up a "dead area" over top of where the mouse buttons are so the cursor will not move when you are clicking the mouse buttons on the track pad.

The other new feature that I really like is the one finger Edge Scroll. If you followed this guide exactly, you should find enough options in this driver to get your track pad working exactly the way you like. These updated drivers have completely fixed the Lenovo Y510P track pad issues that I was having.

I am presently using the 11.8.20.3 drivers that LenBlazer found on the Softpedia site.

http://drivers.softpedia.com/get/KEY...r-118203.shtml

There are a couple of registry tweaks needed so you can use the Lenovo GUI with the ELAN Toshiba driver. After you get the new driver installed, go in to the X64 folder of the driver that you downloaded and copy the file,

ETDAniConf.exe

into your C:\Program Files\Elantech folder. This is the default user interface that Lenovo uses. You can then run this program to access some more track pad features.

If you would prefer to have this as your default theme then do a registry search for the Value UI_Theme.

This needs to be set to 7 to use the Toshiba theme and you can change this to 1 if you prefer the default looking Lenovo theme.

The only other thing I do not like about this driver is that by default, the Mouse Properties opens up when you double click on the System Tray icon but luckily, this can be fixed too. Change this from 1 to 0 and problem solved.

Code:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Elantech\OtherSettingMustOpenMouseProperties = 0

Do another regedit search for MustOpenMouseProperties to make sure you get them all and change them all to 0.

After these minor registry mods, you will need to log off and then log back on for these changes to start working.
