b) Training:IndividualswhowouldliketouseanypieceofequipmentintheHumanTestingCentermustcompleteatrainingsessionwithCorestaff(CoreRatesApply).ThesetrainingsserveasbothatechnicaltutorialforequipmentuseandanorientationforuserstotheHumanTestingCenter.Foruserswhoalreadyhaveexpertiseintheuseofaparticularpieceofequipment,theycanrequestthattheyjustdemonstrateproficiencyinuseandskipthetutorial.PleasenotethateventhoughausermaybeproficientinthetechnicalaspectsofacertainpieceofequipmentthattheintegrationofthebillinganddatastoragesystemsintheIALScoresdiffersfromstandalonepiecesofequipment.Beingtrainedontheseaspectswillensurethatdataisproperlystoredandbillingrecordsareaccurate.

Aspartofthetraining,theprospectiveusermustalsoprovidetheCoreStaffwithproofoftherequireEHStrainings.AllrequiretrainingsarelocatedatthebeginningofeachinstrumentsStandardOperatingProcedure.

c) Scheduling:AllschedulingofequipmenttimeistobedonethroughtheFacilitiesOnline

Managementsystem(FOM).i) Supervisors(i.e.PIs)musthavesupervisoraccountscreatedpriortohavingtheirRA’screate

profiles,theCoreDirectorwilldothisforthemfollowinganinitialemailorphonecallindicatingtheirintentiontouseacore.

10. Next,prepareforgascalibrationbyopeningthegascylinder.Turnthemetalknobonthetopofthe

Nowyoucanattachthecalibrationgashose/whiteconnectorfromthecylindertotheCalGasPortonthemetaboliccart.Thisislocatedonthebackoftheunit.ItistotheleftoftheRoomAirportandjustabovetheO2Rangeswitch.Youmustholdthefrontoftheunit,soitdoesnotfalltothefloor,whilebringingthecalibrationgashose/whiteconnectortotheCalGasport.Stayparalleltothefloorandpushtheconnectorstraightintheportconnector.Toremove,pushdownlightlyonthemetalclaspandpullthecalibrationgashose/whiteconnectoraway.

12. Now,touchpneumotach,itshouldbewarm,indicatingitisshouldbewarmedup.Ensurethat30-

minuteshaspassed,andcontinewithcalibration

13. Thesystemisnowreadyforthethreestepcalibration.Oncethesystemhasbeensetup,thecalibrationprocessisveryquickandeasy.Thesystemshouldbecalibratedagaininbetweenmultiplesubjectsorifithasbeensittingturnedonbutnotusedforalongperiodoftime.Theonlycalibrationsteptheoreticallyneededafterinitialcalibrationistoapplythecalibrationgasagain.However,theenemyofthepneumotachismoisture.Excessmoisturewillelectricallydistortwhatthepneumotachissensing;thiswillbereflectedinerroneousreadingofthe3litersyringeas9,12,15litersetc...Thescreeninsidetheroundovenneedstobeasdryaspossible,soyoumayhavetousethesyringetoinputroomairacrossthesensorandintothemixingchamberifyouaretestingmultiplesubjects.ThepneumotachisverysensitivetosubtlechangesinCO2.Thisisthereasonwhyweneedtoletthepneumotachheatuptooperatingtemperature.DoingatestwithacoldpneumotachwillhavedistortedCO2results–theRERandVO2kgreadingswillbewayoff.

4. Givethesubjectanosecliptoputon5. Theyarereadyforthetreadmillorergometer.Attachthehosetotheoutputendofthe

mouthpiece.Donotletthesubjectinserttheadaptoryet.Whenitistimetostartthetest,thesubjectcanjustspintheadaptortowardtheirface,placetheadaptorintheirmouthandbegin

whitecylinderforthesmallerclearadapter(picturedbelow).Threadtheendofthesmallclearadapterintothefrontholeofthebluefacemask.Facialhairmayinterferewithatightseal.Donothookupthehosetothefullfacemaskuntiltheteststarts.Thestrapswraparoundtheheadandthentheblackconnectorslockintotheclearbracketsofthemask.ThestrapsareadjustablebyslidingthestrapthroughtheblackconnectortheusingVelcrotokeepinplace.Themaskcoversthemouthandnose–sothestrapsneedtobetighttoensureagoodseal

9. Aseriesofsoftwarewindowswillopenandclose.10. Thenthiswindowwillopen.Youwillseetheblanktestresultswindowopenaswell.Thefieldswill

beblankbecausethesubjectisnotbreathingintothesystemyet.WaituntiltheCO2levelsexceeds0.03%,thenclickOK.

11. Ifusingtheheadgear,thesubjectcanspinthemouthpiecetowardtheirface.Theadaptorcanbe

placedinthemouthwhilethenoseclipison.Ifusingthefullfacemask,thehosefromthereticulatedarm/Tcannowbeattachedtotheinputconnectoronthefullfacemask.

12. Therewillbeadelayofapproximately15–20secondsbeforetheMetabolicMeasurementTesting

windowupdateswithdata.Thewhitespacebelowwillbefilledwithdataevery5seconds(thisresolutionlevelcanbechanged)

MonarkErgometermodel828Eistheworld’smostcommonlyusedexerciseergometer.TheadjustablebrakesystemandtheforcecanbesetandreadKiloponds(kp)andNewton(N).Theresultoftheresistanceandcadenceisdisplayedinpower(Watts)ontheelectronicmeter.Thecycleisequippedwithanelectronicmetershowingpedalrevolutionsperminute(RPM),heartrateinbpm(HR),exercisetimeinminutesandseconds(TIME),speedinkmperhourormilesperhour(SPEED),covereddistanceinkmormile(DISTANCE),burnedCalories(CAL)andthepoweronthecycle(WATT).Thewattleveldependsonpedallingspeed,itcanbefinetunedbyincreasingordecreasingthespeedorpedalrpm.Each828Eiscalibratedatthefactory.ThismeansthatyoucanbegintousetheErgometerdirectlyafterassembly.However,iftheuserwishestoverifythescale,pleasereadtheinstructionfor“Calibration”inthismanual.

3. Exercisebouttimeinminutesandseconds(TIME)a. Thetimerstartsautomaticallywhenpedalsaremoved.MetervaluesforTime,Distanceand

Generalfactsaboutmodels

ModelsinV3Dconsistofdefinitionsofsegmentsandlandmarksusedtocreatethesesegments.Thesedefinitionsareneededsothatthe3Dorientationofsegmentscanbetrackedduringamovement.Ingeneral,segmentsaredefinedusingrealorvirtually-definedmarkersattheproximalanddistalends,aswellasradiioftheproximalanddistalends.Atleastthreemarkersareneededtodefinetheorientationofasegment.Whenasegmentiscreated,itisassignedacoordinatesystem(seered,green,andblueorthogonalaxesinimagebelow)whichisrigidlyassociatedwiththesegment’sproximaljoint(e.g.,thethighcoordinatesystemwillbeanchoredatthehipjoint).Modelsmustalsoincludeassignmentoftrackingmarkers,ormarkersthatareregisteredtothesegmentdefinitioninacalibrationtrialandarethenusedtotrackthemovementofthesegmentduringmovementtrials.Thesegmentcoordinatesystemismodeledasrigidlyrelatedtotheorientationofthetrackingmarkersandforthisreasontrackingmarkersareoftenplacedonplasticshells(e.g.,thighandshankclusters)oronanatomicallocationswithlittleskinmotionartifact(e.g.,acromio-clavicularjointsduringlowerextremitytasks).Inadditiontosegment-specificdefinitions,modelsrequireanindividual’sheightandbodymassforcalculationofsegmentinertialpropertiesandjointkinetics.

Theorientationofadjacentsegmentcoordinatesystemswithrespecttoeachotherprovidesthejointangleorjointtranslationalposition.Forthisreason,itisimportanttopayattentiontotheorientationofsegmentcoordinatesystemsastheyarecreated.Intheimagebelow,youcanseethatallvisiblesegmentshavethered(X)axisorientedtothemodel’sleft.Thismatchingorientationprovideseaseofunderstandingforjointdefinitions.Forexample,rotationsaboutXbetweentheshankandthigharesagittalplanejointangles,thoseaboutYarefrontalplanejointangles,andthoseaboutZaretransverseplanejointangles.Inordertoobtainaccurateandmeaningfuldata,itiscriticalthatyoucorrectlydefineandconstructyourmodel.RecommendationsformodelingsegmentsandjointsofinterestcanbefoundontheV3Dwiki,aswellasinpublishedrecommendationsfromtheInternationalSocietyofBiomechanics.
