I – Mission & Objectives

• To train students and highly qualified personnel at an advanced level in all of the life science disciplines relevant to the host-parasite relationship • To advance knowledge in the life science disciplines relevant to the host-parasite relationship • To undertake basic research aimed at reducing morbidity and mortality caused by parasite infections in animals and humans • To communicate our findings to the scientific community and the general public • To contribute our expertise to the broader mission of McGill University through our teaching, research and service in the life sciences in the Faculties of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences, Medicine, and Science, particularly in relation to Biotechnology and the Environment

II – Highlights of Past Year’s Activities

► In August 2007, The Institute of Parasitology celebrated 75 years as the only Institute of its kind in North America. In an area of increasing public awareness and interest, McGill has recognized the importance of the Institute and the world class research carried out here with its continued support, both in terms of infrastructure and new staff appointments. In addition to its world-wide reputation, the Institute acts as a “virtual” anchor for Parasitology in Quebec. As the founding member of the FQRNT/McGill funded “Centre for Host-Parasite Interactions”, it brings together researchers from research institutions through the Province. The 75th Anniversary, marked by a Public Anniversary Symposium, Parasites and Us, represented a significant chapter in the Institute’s long and distinguished history. Prof. Peter Hotez, from the School of Tropical Medicine, George Washington University, USA, was a prestigious invited guest speaker and gave a talk on “Neglected Tropical Diseases: Prospects for their Control”. McGill Professor Marilyn Scott also gave a talk entitled “Multiple infection: an understated reality”, as did Dr. Brian Ward of the Montreal General Hospital Research Institute on “Human Parasitology: People & Organisms on the Move in 2007”.

► Prof. Timothy G. Geary completed his first full year as Director of the Institute of Parasitology, and continues to serve. This five-year appointment commenced 1 April 2007. Prof. Geary served as the Chair of both the Chemotherapy session, and the Anthelmintic Resistance session, at the World Association for the Advancement of Veterinary Parasitology (WAAVP) Annual Meeting, held in Ghent, Belgium, in August 2007, as well as the Chair of the Novartis Symposium and was a Plenary Lecturer in the Pfizer Symposium at the WAAVP. Prof. Geary was a Plenary Lecturer at the British Society for Parasitology Annual Meeting in Newcastle, England, in April 2008. Prof. Geary also continues as a Tier 1 Canada Research Chair in Parasite Biotechnology. ►Prof. Terry Spithill resigned from McGill, as of December 31st, 2007, to take up a prestigious Research Chair in Veterinary Parasitology at Charles Sturt University. Prof. Spithill held a Tier

1 Canada Research Chair in Immunoparasitology until December 2007. With permission from the Provost, a recruitment effort was launched to identify a suitable replacement for this senior position and CRC Chair. ► Prof. Gaétan Faubert retired on 30 June 2008, after 33 years of service to the Institute of Parasitology and McGill University. Dr. Faubert taught immunology on both campuses; his lectures were always well received and well appraised by the students. ► The Institute’s Faculty Lecturer, Dr. Jim Smith, retired on 31 August 2007, after 25 years of service to the Institute of Parasitology. Prof. Robin Beech replaced Dr. Smith as the Graduate Program Director, and Prof. Paula Ribeiro replaced Jim as Chair of the Institute’s Scholarships Committee. ►Assistant Professor Florence Dzierszinski, who joined the Institute in December 2006, continues to hold a prestigious Tier 2 Canada Research Chair in Parasite Pathogenesis as well as supporting funds from the Canada Foundation for Innovation. During the time frame of this report, Dr. Dzierszinski received a 2-yr March of Dimes grant, plus 5-yr funding from NSERC. ►Prof. Marilyn Scott was appointed Director of the McGill School of the Environment as of 1-June-2008. This is a 5-year appointment. ►Prof. Roger Prichard organized an International Consortium for Anthelmintic Resistance in Ghent, Belgium, in August 2007, and was invited, with Prof. Geary, by the journal Nature to write a News & Views article on new drug development. Prof. Prichard’s work on a vaccine for African trypanosomiasis (sleeping sickness), a serious disease caused by a parasite that is endemic in many parts of Africa, is funded by a Gates Foundation grant. Prof. Prichard also continues as a James McGill Chair (2003-2010), and continues to serve Dean Madramootoo as Chair of the Faculty Planning Committee for the Faculty of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences. ► Prof. Georges continues as Director of the Institute’s Biotechnology Program. The Biotechnology program continues to receive more applications than there are available spaces in the program. In September 2007, the number of non-thesis Biotechnology students increased significantly from the previous year’s enrolment. Since the launch in 2005 of the M.Sc. (Applied) degree in Biotechnology, demand for this program has been strong and continues to grow. There is a waiting list for the M.Sc.(A) Biotech program. Expansion in this hot area is hampered by lack of lab space. ► Dr. David Marcogliese, from Environment Canada, St. Lawrence Centre, was appointed as an Adjunct Professor to the Institute of Parasitology in March 2008. This is a 3-year appointment. Dr. Marcogliese collaborates with Dr. Marilyn Scott and complements her research program on environmental issues. ► New Structural Bioinformatics course: For the first time on the Macdonald Campus, a Structural Bioinformatics course was offered in 2007. Assistant Professor Reza Salavati was the course coordinator. The course was well received by the first cohort of students, and has been accepted by the McGill Centre for Bioinformatics as an elective for the Bioinformatics option across the University.

► New Functional Genomics course: Prof. Geary developed and launched a new Functional Genomics course in September 2007. This was the first time that students had the opportunity to study functional genomics on the Macdonald Campus. ► New course on Water-Borne Health Hazards: Professors Faubert and Geary delivered a course on Water-borne Health Hazards as part of the Water Resource Engineering program in 2007; this illustrates the continuing commitment of the Institute of Parasitology to other Macdonald programs, such as the Brace Water Institute. ►The Institute of Parasitology completed its fifth year as the Leader for the FQRNT Centre for Host-Parasite Interactions. With the departure from McGill of Terry Spithill, a new director for the Centre was identified. Prof. Armando Jardim agreed to serve. The Quebec government will continue to fund the Centre for 1 more year in the current round. Then, the Centre must apply for renewal, and compete in the highly competitive funding arena. ► Dr. Manami Nishi joined Prof. Dzierszinski’s group as of 1 June, 2007, as a postdoctoral fellow. She hails from the Japan, and won a prestigious PBEEE (Programme de bourses d’excellence pour étudiants étrangers) funding award from the Quebec government. She will be conducting novel research for the identification and purification of cyst wall proteins in Toxoplasma gondii, using proteomic approaches. ► Dr. Rodrigo Miranda from Brazil joined Prof. Prichard’s laboratory in Feb. 2008 as a postdoctoral fellow. He holds a Canadian Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, tenable in Canada. Dr. Miranda will be investigating the mechanisms of drug resistance in parasitic nematodes. ► Postdoctoral fellow Dr. Catherine Bourguinat joined Prof. Prichard’s lab in October 2007. She will work in Africa on Onchocerca volvulus, including studies in the field in Cameroon. Dr. Bourguinat is conducting research to discover a possible genetic marker to follow potential ivermectin resistance in Onchocerca volvulus. We have recently learned, with dismay, that Catherine has contracted malaria while conducting research in Africa. She is currently undergoing treatment in Cameroon. ► Postdoctoral fellow Joseph Nabhan left the laboratory of Prof. Geary on 31 October 2007 to continue his postdoctoral research at Harvard. ► Dr. Anne Schwab (working in Prof. Geary’s lab) holds an FQRNT postdoctoral fellowship at the Université de Montréal Veterinary School at Saint-Hyacinthe, but she continues to collaborate with veterinary parasitologists and molecular biologists at the Institute of Parasitology. ► Ms. Stephanie Goyette (PhD candidate in the lab of Prof. Dzierszinski) won a CIHR doctoral fellowship, and Ms. Carlie Halpenny, in the laboratory of Prof. Scott, won an NSERC doctoral fellowship. ►The Institute offered in 07/08 a Flow Cytometry Core Facility as well as a Molecular Biology Service Facility to the McGill community, the FQRNT Centre, and industry. The Institute also offered biohazard waste disposal for the entire Faculty. The continuation of these services is being called into review, due to lack of funding for a dedicated technician. Teaching and Learning (undergraduate and graduate): Student Success

A. Undergraduate – Although the Institute has no undergraduate program of its own, Institute professors taught basic life sciences to students in several required courses on the Macdonald Campus and in the Faculty of Medicine. As per Senate policy, numerical data from course evaluations are available to McGill students and staff via University postings by the Office of the Provost on the web each term. See http://www/mcgill.ca/provost/courseevaluations/ (see Activity Reports for individual scores).

B. Graduate – The Institute graduated 4 Ph.D. students (Drs. A. Abdul-Wahid, C.

Bourguinat, C. Ivory, L. Purcell) and 2 Master’s students (A. Diawara, M. Nyisztor) in our thesis research degree programs in 2007/08. Dr. Abdul-Wahid accepted a postdoctoral position with Prof. J. Gariépy at the Princess Margaret Hospital, University of Toronto Health Centre, working on a colono-rectal cancer vaccine. Dr. Bourguinat continued on at McGill as a postdoctoral fellow with Prof. Prichard working on Onchocerca volvulus. Dr. Purcell was nominated for a Canadian Association for Graduate Studies Distinguished Dissertation Award and a Prix d’Excellence de l’Association des Doyens des Études Supérieures au Québec. Dr. Purcell accepted a postdoctoral position at Columbia University in New York, continuing her work in the field of malaria. Of our 2 M.Sc. graduates, Mr. Nyisztor found employment as a Food Safety Inspector in Québec, and Ms. Diawara returned to McGill to undertake doctoral research. Doctoral candidate Nicholas Patocka serves as the Manager of the Ceilidh Club, run by the Students’ Society, on the Macdonald Campus. He was last year’s winner of the Gold Key Award for participation in student life on the Macdonald Campus, and holds an FQRNT doctoral fellowship. Doctoral candidate Lisa Purcell won a travel award to attend the American Society for Tropical Medicine and Health 56th Annual Meeting in Philadelphia, PA, November 4-8, 2007. Ms. Purcell was further honored by the ASTMH by winning a Young Investigator award for her work on malaria.

C. In the non-thesis Biotechnology program, 1 student graduated with a Certificate in

Biotechnology, and the new M.Sc. Applied in Biotechnology program graduated its third cohort of 9 students. The biotech industry is an eager employer for these well trained graduates. Graduates have found jobs at a number of Biotech/Pharma companies (Merck Frosst, MethylGene, Covance, Charles River, Ontario Public Health, to name a few), or have accepted research assistant positions at universities, while other graduates decided to continue into a Ph.D. program.

Involvement in the Community: Institute faculty served the academic and wider community in multiple ways. All staff serve on a variety of Faculty and McGill Committees, review journal articles and PhD/MSc theses, and organize conferences, as detailed in the Activity Reports. Some particular involvement is highlighted here. The Montreal Eureka! Festival was held in the Old Port of Montreal from the 15th to the 17th of June 2007. This was the first of what is to become an annual event, and its purpose was to introduce science to the general public and school children in the Montreal area. The Institute of Parasitology/Centre for Host-Parasite Interactions was one of only three McGill units to participate in this well organized event. Three laboratories from the Institute, including professors and students, participated in this event and provided lots of interesting ideas to Montrealers, which were well received by the public. Staff from the Institute of Parasitology, and other McGill departments, contributed to the Drug Resistance in Parasites (COST) meeting organized by the Centre de Recherche en Infectologie de l’Université Laval, in Quebec City, 22-24 October 2007. Drs. Peter Hotez (George Washington School of Tropical Medicine), Brian Ward (Montreal General Hospital Research Institute) and Marilyn Scott (McGill School of the Environment) presented talks on August 11th, 2007, at a Public Lecture to mark the 75th Anniversary of the Institute of Parasitology. This was followed by a reception for friends of Parasitology, staff and students McGill-wide. These talks were open to the public and the entire McGill community. Dr. Jim Smith, until his retirement, responded to a wide assortment of questions about parasites from the general public, students, university teachers, and the media, and maintained the following web pages for public access: The World of Parasites http://martin.parasitology.mcgill.ca/jimspage/worldof.htm Parasitism and Associations http://martin.parasitology.mcgill.ca/jimspage/biopage/parasit.htm The Power and Versatility of in situ Hybridization http://martin.parasitology.mcgill.ca/insituhybridization/index.htm Cell Structure and Function http://martin.parasitology.mcgill.ca/jimspage/cellbiol/cell.htm

III – FQRNT Centre for Host-Parasite Interactions Centre de recherche sur les interactions hôte-parasite

In 2007-2008, our Provincially-funded Regroupement Stratégique Centre completed its fifth busy year of operation. Please visit the website www.mcgill.ca/chpi for details of our scientific activities, and services offered, throughout the Centre. The Centre for Host-Parasite Interactions brings together researchers and their trainees at the Institute of Parasitology, Department of Microbiology and Immunology, Department of Biology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Department of Physiology, Department of Chemical Engineering, Department of Bioresource Engineering, School of Dietetics and Human Nutrition, Brace Research Institute, McGill Centre for Tropical Medicine and the McGill University Health Centre, at McGill University, Université de Montréal, Centre de recherche en Infectiologie, Université Laval, INRS – Institut Armand-Frappier, and Université du Québec à Montréal into what is considered by external reviewers as the strongest centre for parasitological research in the world. It is recognized as an FQRNT Regroupement stratégique. The research of the Centre focuses on Mechanisms of Pathogenesis and Host Defense to Parasite Infections, and the Molecular Basis of Anti-parasite Drug Resistance and Drug Discovery. This cross fertilization is also of great benefit to the approximately 108 trainees in the Centre. As a result of the Centre, there have been over 60 joint publications from Centre members and trainees over the last 2 years and numerous collaborative research grants and contracts. The Centre has received international recognition by being invited to participate with networks or centres of excellence in other parts of the world in joint collaborative projects. Each year the Centre holds several research meetings involving all members of the Centre. The Annual two-day Scientific Meeting typically involves 50 – 60 oral and poster presentations and invited international experts. This year, a Molecular Parasitology Symposium was held at Université de Québec à Montréal from June 12-13, 2008. Plans are underway for next year’s meeting at Université de Montréal à St-Hyacinthe. In addition to the Annual Scientific Meeting, a meeting was held to review progress on New Initiative projects funded by the Centre as well as a meeting to plan more joint applications within the Centre, for external grants. The Centre is vibrant and adds tremendous value to the research and training efforts of its members.

IV – Challenges

We are confident that the future of the Institute of Parasitology is incredibly bright, but we sense that it is approaching a cross-road. The Institute has gone through a significant growth period since the year 2000, with several major CFI Awards, three CRC Awards, the FQRNT Centre Award, and the establishment of a Biotechnology graduate program. Unfortunately, infrastructure funding and support staff appointments have not kept pace with growth. We are struggling to identify new sources of funding that will enable us to maintain our considerable momentum. This applies especially to the area of high technology platform instrumentation made possible by CFI wins, which have high maintenance costs associated with them as well as requiring dedicated highly skilled technicians for optimal operation of the instruments. The sustainability of our present high level of operation is coming into question. The Institute would greatly benefit from more University support to maintain its operations at this demonstrable high level of success. The Biotechnology graduate program, as it continues to grow, is also in need of its own operating budget. We look forward to working with the University and potential outside sources to resolve these issues. The Institute of Parasitology celebrated its 75th Anniversary in August 2007. We look forward to the challenge of another 75 years of research excellence, teaching, and service to the University. We aspire that the Institute of Parasitology will continue to make significant contributions to the study of parasitology worldwide, and to fulfill its mandate to graduate highly skilled professionals in our domain.

B. TEACHING AND GRADUATE STUDENT SUPERVISION 1. Teaching (Biotechnology Certificate Courses) Course Coordinator: Biotechnology Management Course 394-621A

I give the first lecture of the course. Speakers are selected from various sectors of the Biotech industry. Attend most lectures and initiate discussions and clarification. In the fall of 2008, I introduced a new component to the list of lectures “a group project presentations”. The class was divided into five groups of four students and each group made two presentations on a hypothetical NewCo. The second presentation was done in the presence of three judges, myself, Dr. Charlie Fong and Mr. Serge Langford “ the latter two are Investment Directors working at the BDC and Multiple Capital Venture Investment firms”.

Assessment for this course is one final report of 5-8 pages.

Course Coordinator: Biotechnology Practicum Course 394-691. The objective of this course is to place in Industry laboratories for a 12 weeks Stage working on a research project designed to yield results and a final report by the end of Stage. At the end of the 12 weeks, each student writes a report “manuscript style”, that includes all of the experimental results in the project. Students are assessed on one final report.

Course Coordinator: Biotechnology Research Internship BTEC 622-625 The Research Internship is divided into four courses 622, 623, 624, and 625. The internship begins with the placement of students in Industry or Research labs in Quebec or outside Quebec for a minimum of 16 weeks. Following their placement, initial draft of project objectives is presented and discussed with the immediate supervisor of the student. The latter draft is then approved or modified by each student committee (three members committee) as part of research proposal marked by all committee members. Each student is expected to submit four progress reports and two evaluations done by immediate supervisor. All students give a final oral presentation and a report.

Director of Biotechnology Graduate Programs: The biotechnology graduate program continues on a growth path in spite of the down

sizing of the Quebec biotechnology industry and establishment of other biotechnology training programs; in Quebec and Internationally. This program, with the help of many faculty, staff and students continues to improve through the addition of complementary courses and laboratory updates. Over the past year, we have established a highly successful MSc (A) program that is internationally recognized (as an example, see last page of this document for an attached email from Japan).

A major attraction and continual success of this program has been our record of student placement in industry (65-80% placement in industry laboratories). The coordination of the program is very time intensive, and not possible without Mr. C. Trudeau’s watchful eyes and coordination, but equally rewarding.
