    MCPSS Department of Instructional Technology Presents

    Becoming a BYOD Savvy Administrator PLULearn to lead a Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) initiative in your school. School leaders will review best practices for BYOD implementation and review cutting-edge technology tools that may be used in their schools. Develop technology skills and strategies to better support teachers and to improve student achievement. Participants will discuss ideas and strategies with other leaders in the group and apply them to their own practice. Tuesday, January 31, Friday, March 10 and Tuesday, June 6 9:00 A.M. – 1:00 P.M.

    Session 1: Research In this session, participants will review different implementation models. They will participate part of the day in a BYOD Summit with MCPSS BYOD Certified Teachers. During this time, best practices and other pertinent information will be shared. Opportunities for collaboration and enhanced professional development will be offered.

    Session 2: Implementation In this session, participants will discuss the top 10 things to do or not to do for implementation. They will examine and share the current state of implementation in their school and gain new insights about program improvements. They will review the impact of the leadership role in the BYOD implementation process.

    Session 3: Evaluation Participants will investigate several models for evaluating implementation success. They will become familiar with multiple processes for feedback.

    Application Title: Digital Literacy Media Project Year 1

    Abstract:

    The purpose of this professional study is to build school administrator capacity to lead the digital transformation as coach, mentor and critical friend to teachers as they work to create a student centered learning environment that leverages the appropriate and regular use of technology. The foundation of the project is to build teacher capacity to use digital media in concert with proven instructional strategies at a deeper level to deliver relevant/real-world learning experiences while regularly incorporating meaningful instructional practices that directly support Alabama College and Career Ready Standards teaching, learning and assessing for understanding. The predicted outcome will be that rigorous student centered classroom environments will seamlessly blend reading/Literacy and available technologies to maximize the learning experience for each student.

    Participating administrators will be required to provide Digital Literacy Media Specialist ( DLMS) time to collaborate, plan, mentor and co-teach with participating teachers, provide common planning time when possible, for all Digital Literacy team members, attend all professional development sessions, complete surveys when requested to provide feedback, and communicate with parents and stakeholders regarding the digital literacy project.

    A prerequisite of the study will be that all participants are employed by the Mobile County Public Schools and hold a current administrative certificate from the state of Alabama.

    Participants will earn 1 PLU for year 1 participation; 1 PLU for year 2 participation.

    The PLU will be offered this year as a Superintendent Approved local PLU.

    Session 1: Interactive/ Face to Face/ Standards 2 and 6 Module 1: Explore the Core

    • Participants will be immersed in Discovery Education’s extensive streaming library of rich and engaging media that spans all curriculum areas. This course was designed to demonstrate how DE streaming supports multiple learning modalities with content that is easy to integrate, align to standards, and always current.

    • Participants will learn how to search for content based on tags, including state standards, keywords, media types, grade levels, and more and seamlessly link lesson objectives to digital media. In addition, exemplar CCRS lessons will be discussed and explored for easy use and adaptation in the classroom, and participants will have the opportunity to experience a piece of the model lesson taught by the DE specialist.

    Session 2: Interactive/ Face to Face/Standards 2 and 6 Module 2: Centers-Based Teaching & Learning

    • Participants will experience a model lesson first hand by moving through a variety of stations designed to build student content knowledge using a Center-based approach. Directions, management, resources, and planning techniques are shared. Participants will create their own centers using materials and planning templates. Session 3: Interactive/ Face to Face/ Standards 2 and 6 Module 3: Maximizing Student Engagement

    • Participants will experience innovative teaching and learning that incorporates rigorous assignments aligned with CCRS expectations.

    • Participants will create a digital assignment that includes two or more digital assets. • Participants will be introduced to board builder as a tool to enhance digital assignments. • Participants will capitalize on the universal design features embedded in DE and create pathways for all students to

    meet essential questions and learning objectives.

    Session 4: Interactive/Face to Face/Standards 2 and 6 Module 4: Assessing Progress

    • Participants will experience best practices for using formative and performance based assessments. • Participants will evaluate tasks for depth of knowledge, determine content and skills required for mastery

    and plan lessons with the end in mind.

    Session 5: Interactive/ Face to Face Collaborative Showcase of Implementation of Digital Literacy Project.

    • Participants will meet as a whole group with their school based digital literacy leadership team. Each team will showcase their final project reflecting the site based implementation of digital media.

    • Participants will complete a reflection of the series of modules presented.
