In today’s session, we are going to be writing an introductory paragraph for our instructions.

Have a look at the example on the slide and consider the questions below:

- What is the purpose of the introductory purpose?

- Who is the paragraph written for?

- What difference does the paragraph make?

You might also want to consider the ‘you will need’ box. Will your instructions require ingredients or resources?

There are lots of different purposes for an introductory paragraph, but the main ones are:

- To make sure the person is following the correct instructions.

- To hook the reader in - to interest and engage them.

- To give them a brief history or background of the subject.

Please use the rest of this session to have a go at drafting an introductory paragraph for your instructions - I have added some helpful resources on the next slide if you get stuck.

Please share with your teachers once you’re done.

Model Write.

How to make a victoria sponge cake:

1) Preheat oven at 180 degrees. 2) Mix 225g of caster sugar with 225g of unsalted baking butter. You must mix them until the

sugar and butter are completely combined. 3) Add 225g of self-raising flour, 4 large eggs, a teaspoon of baking powder and 2 drops of

vanilla essence. Mix until completely combined.4) Then, line two round cake tins with greaseproof paper (or grease them if you do not have

the paper).5) Split the cake mix equally between the two tins and bake for 22-25 minutes, or until a

round-knife comes out completely clean.6) Allow to cool for 1 hour.7) Cover the top of one sponge with vanilla buttercream, and the bottom of the other sponge

with jam. Sandwich the cakes together.8) Sprinkle with icing sugar and serve.

What do you think you could have improved? Why?

If you were to do the task again, what would you do differently?
