The Monthly Weather Review - Australia is produced by the Bureau of Meteorology to provide a concise but informativeoverview of the temperatures, rainfall and significant weather events in Australia for the month. To keep the Monthly Weather Review as timely as possible, much of the information is based on electronic reports. Althoughevery effort is made to ensure the accuracy of these reports, the results can be considered only preliminary until completequality control procedures have been carried out. Any major discrepancies will be noted in later issues. We are keen to ensure that the Monthly Weather Review is appropriate to its readers' needs. Units of measurementExcept where noted, temperature is given in degrees Celsius (°C), rainfall in millimetres (mm), and wind speed in kilometresper hour (km/h).

Observation times and periodsEach station in Australia makes its main observation for the day at 9 am local time. At this time, the precipitation over the past24 hours is determined, and maximum and minimum thermometers are also read and reset. In this publication, the followingconventions are used for assigning dates to the observations made:Maximum temperatures are for the 24 hours from 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the afternoon of thatday.Minimum temperatures are for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. They normally occur in the early morning of thatday.Mean temperatures are the average of the daily maximum and daily minimum temperatures.Daily rainfall is for the 24 hours to 9 am on the date mentioned. This means a significant fraction of the rain may haveoccurred on the previous calendar day.Monthly rainfall is for the period from 9 am on the last day of the previous month to 9 am on the last day of this month.Maximum daily wind gusts are in the 24 hours from midnight to midnight.

Climatological valuesThe climatological averages shown in the text and tables are generally long-term means based on observations from the years1961–1990. They are not shown for sites with less than 25 years of record in that time, as they cannot then be calculatedreliably. Climatological extremes are generally taken from all available years of record; the number of years can vary markedlyfrom site to site.

RecordsThe tables of records are not exhaustive, as they only show sites with at least 30 years of record. This may exclude locationswhere a new site has been established; this means even some major cities and towns may not be listed.

MapsThe temperature and rainfall maps are intended to give an overview of the country. There could be discrepancies between thevalues shown on these maps and those at individual locations, as a result of the way the maps are generated. A wide range ofmaps of rainfall, temperature and other variables, covering the whole country and smaller regions can be found atwww.bom.gov.au/climate/maps.

Accessing dataTables of daily values for selected sites are included toward the back of the Monthly Weather Review. Data from many moresites and for other times are available from www.bom.gov.au/climate/data/.

Significant weather

Tropical cyclones: Olwyn and Nathan

Developing from a tropical low located over the IndianOcean on the 11th, tropical cyclone Olwyn reachedcategory 3 strength (severe) as it approached thePilbara coast on 12 March, with sustained winds of140 km/h near the centre and gusts to 195 km/h.Olwyn tracked west of Exmouth during the 13th, thenmoved in a southerly direction along the coast, weakening to category 2 strength south of Carnarvon, before being downgraded to a tropical low nearGeraldton on the 14th.

The system produced heavy rain and damaging windsbetween 12 and 14 March over coastal areas of thePilbara and Gascoyne. After the 14th rainfall from theex-cyclone also extended southward to the westernGascoyne and adjacent parts of the northernSouthwest Land Division.

Minor flooding resulted in the Gascoyne, Greenoughand Irwin catchments with several towns andcommunities declared natural disaster zones by thefederal government. Power was cut in Exmouth andOnslow while Carnarvon lost both water andelectricity, banana plantations sustained severedamage, and some roads were temporarily blocked bytrees and flooding.

Nathan was a very long-lived system, developing froma tropical low in the Coral Sea on the 10th andreaching category 2 strength on 11 March as ittracked towards the Peninsula coast. At noon on the12th, Nathan was located about 185 km north ofCooktown with winds near the centre of the systemreaching about 95 km/h, with gusts to 130 km/h.Areas of heavy rain and storms covered parts of theNorth Tropical Coast and Tablelands and Peninsuladistricts in Queensland before Nathan shifted awayfrom the Queensland coast.

Nathan strengthened as it again moved towards theQueensland coast after several days over the CoralSea and made landfall as a category 4 system early inthe morning of 20 March on the Cape York Peninsula, between Cape Melville and Cape Flattery. The highestwind speed observation in the vicinity of landfall wasa peak gust of 170 km/h at Cape Flattery.

The system dropped to category 1 as it moved inland, bringing gale-force winds and heavy rainfall to theparts of the Peninsula south of Weipa, then wasbriefly downgraded to a tropical low beforereintensifing to category 1 strength upon entering theGulf of Carpentaria. A second landfall was made onthe Arnhem coastline south of Nhulunbuy on themorning of the 22nd as a category 2 system with

sustained winds of 95 km/h near the centre and guststo 130 km/h. Nathan continued northwestward, crossing Elcho Island, and making another landfall onthe Top End between Goulburn Island and Maningridaas a category 1 system early in the morning of 24March before decaying as it moved over thenorthwest Top End.

Nathan brought heavy rainfall to the Cape YorkPeninsula between 11 and 15 March, flooded anumber of roads, and caused the closure of schools inthe Cooktown and Cape York areas. Heavy rain wasthen recorded in northeast Queensland and the northof the Northern Territory between 19 and 24 March. Anumber of communities were evacuated from Elchoand Goulburn islands and Kakadu National Park inadvance of Nathan's arrival.

Strong winds in Tasmania

Strong and gusty winds affected much of Tasmaniaon the 5th and 6th as a cold front crossed the State.Damage to trees, roofs and power lines was reportedin the northwest and around Hobart. Many sitesreported gusts in excess of 90 km/h, with gusts atseveral elevated and exposed sites well over100 km/h. The peak gusts for the event were139 km/h, recorded at both Cape Grim and MountWellington. The winds also made a bushfire nearLefroy in northern Tasmania difficult to control. Thefire had commenced on the evening of the 3rd andeventually burnt over 1200 ha, mostly in State forest.

An exceptional autumn warm spell in thenorth

An exceptional hot spell which affected large parts ofnorthern and central Australia during March 2015contributed to record-breaking monthly averages. Theheatwave, which peaked on 19 and 20 March, setrecords over large parts of the Northern Territory andQueensland, as well as outback South Australia andnorthern New South Wales, both for area-averagedtemperatures, runs of warm days, and March dailytemperature records. See the Bureau's SpecialClimate Statement 51 for more details.

Queensland experienced two periods of particularlyhot weather: one that affected the west at the start ofthe month and another that peaked in the west andsouth on the 19th and 20th March. This March hasbeen the first time a Queensland station recorded amean monthly maximum temperature above 40.0 °Cfor March (Julia Creek with 40.5 °C, Century Minewith 40.2 °C, and Winton with 40.5 °C).

Thunderstorms

Thunderstorms were common in New South Walesduring March, with significant storms reported on:

• 1 March along much of the east coast, with stormsin Sydney causing widespread wind gusts above90 km/h, including 104 km/h at Port Botany, aswell as reports of small hail in Camden andHelensburgh. The damaging winds and short-livedheavy rain caused roof damage and downed treesand powerlines, with more than 500 jobs reportedby the State Emergency Service (SES).

• 8 March, causing heavy rain in the Coffs Harbourregion, including 50 mm in 30 minutes atWoolgoolga.

• 9 March in the Grafton region, with wind gusts ofup to 113 km/h and rain rates of up to 50 mm in 30minutes, resulting in numerous downed trees andleaking roofs.

• 11 March in the Sydney and Illawarra region, withwind gusts of up to 98 km/h at Moss Vale as wellas short-lived heavy rainfall and reports of 2 cm to3 cm hail at Bargo. The strong winds causedwidespread power outages, as well as lifting theroof of a house onto the train tracks at Mt Druitt inwestern Sydney, with about 150 calls to the SESrelating to downed trees and powerlines. Lightningstrikes were also implicated in several house fires.

• 12 March on the central coast, with wind gusts of94 km/h at Scone and 5 cm hail reported north ofPutty. Damage was also caused to roofs andskylights in the Blue Mountains, with hail of 2 cmto 3 cm in Blackheath and larger than 5 cm in

Faulconbridge, with some reports suggesting hailof up to 10 cm in diameter.

• 21 March in the Narrabri region, with strong windsand hail of more than 7 cm in diameter causingwidespread damage to crops, as well as damagingroofs, cars and windows and killing at least twohorses.

• 31 March affecting Dulwich Hill in inner westernSydney, causing locally heavy rain and strongwinds, some damage to roofs and trees, andlocalised flash flooding, with two drivers rescuedfrom floodwaters by the SES.

Severe thunderstorms developed in Queensland overthe southeast, southern and northwest regions on the22nd. In Chinchilla, located in the northern DarlingDowns, hail as large as tennis balls was reported ataround 6 pm. Heavy rainfall was recorded at severallocations, with 56 mm falling in the 30 minutes to2 pm at Slacks Creek, 58 mm falling in 30 minutes to2:10 pm, 52 mm in the 25 minutes to 2:35 pm and atMt Nebo with 66 mm in the 30 minutes to 3:10 pm.

A complex area of low pressure over Tasmaniatriggered slow-moving thunderstorms near Hobartand the Tasman Peninsula on the evening of the 26th.Moderate to heavy rainfall rates were observed, bringing some flash flooding, along with localisedsmall hail and several lightning strikes; over 700premises lost power for a few hours.

Thunderstorms were also observed in WesternAustralia on the 26th. A trough along the west coastof Australia produced storms, with hail to 4 cm indiameter observed in the Geraldton area.

Synoptic summary

Weather across Australia during the first week ofMarch was dominated by low pressure troughsextending along the Western Australian coast throughto the inland east. The start of the month also saw aridge of high pressure extend from the southernIndian Ocean into the Great Australia Bight, whichdirected a southwesterly airstream into southern partsof South Australia, Victoria and Tasmania thatpersisted through to the second week of March. Aseries of cold fronts also crossed the southeast of thecontinent during the first two weeks of March.

A tropical low located to the east of Far NorthQueensland deepened to form tropical cycloneNathan on the 11th as it moved towards the coast.Another tropical low positioned on the monsoontrough to the north of Western Australia deepened onthe 12th, forming tropical cyclone Olwyn. Olwyn thentracked southward, crossing the Pilbara coast on the13th. Meanwhile, Nathan slowed its westward trackbefore moving back into the Coral Sea andstrengthening over several days. Nathan crossed the

northeast Queensland coast on the 20th, brieflyweakened to a tropical low, but regained tropicalcyclone status in the Gulf of Carpentaria as itcontinued a westward track to cross the coast of theTop End of the Northern Territory on the eastern tipon 22nd and in the north on the 24th.

From mid-month high pressure systems passing overthe Bight dominated the south, interrupted by acomplex system of cold fronts during the 18th to19th, followed by the passage of another high.

The last few days of March saw tropical cycloneNathan weaken slowly over the coastal north of theNorthern Territory, as a broad area of low pressuredeveloped across the northern Kimberley. On the26th, a deep surface trough extended through inlandQueensland and into New South Wales as a lowpressure system and associated frontal systemapproached western Tasmania ahead of a ridge ofhigh pressure that extended across the southern halfof the continent through to the end of the month.

Decile rank of mean daily maximumtemperature in March 2015

Maximum temperatures were warmer than averageacross most of Queensland and the NorthernTerritory, adjacent parts of Western Australia, andmuch of northern and eastern New South Wales.Parts of central western Queensland observed

anomalies in excess of +5 °C. Below-averagemaximum temperatures were observed in Tasmania, western Victoria, southeastern South Australia, andacross a large area of Western Australia centred onthe Pilbara and Gascoyne districts.

At the start of March, hot temperatures propagatedeastward from southwestern Queensland andnorthern inland New South Wales towards the coast, with daily maxima generally 8 °C to 10 °C aboveaverage. A number of sites in southeasternQueensland and coastal northeastern New SouthWales observed their warmest March day (see page14) on record on the 5th.

A significant heat, which was initially localised innorthern parts of the Northern Territory and farnorthwest Queensland, intensified and extended tothe southern Northern Territory, central and southernQueensland, northeastern South Australia, andnortheastern New South Wales during mid-March.Numerous records for the highest daily temperaturein March were set during the hot spell, mostly on the19th and 20th. See Special Climate Statement 51 formore details.

Towards the end of March, low daytime temperatureswere recorded in the northwest and central WesternAustralia due to wet conditions, as well as southernVictoria and northern Tasmania from a southerly coldburst.

Minimum temperatures

The March mean minimum temperature for Australiawas 0.56 °C above average. Mean minimumtemperature was the warmest on record forQueensland (+1.62 °C), exceeding the previousrecord anomaly of +1.47 °C, set in 2007.

Rainfall

Nationally-averaged rainfall during March was 30%below the long-term mean. Tasmania and WesternAustralia were the only regions to record area-averaged totals above the long-term mean, resultingfrom above-average rainfall in the west of both States.Large parts of the eastern two thirds of Australiaobserved below-average rainfall for the month, covering most of South Australia away from thesouthwest; large parts of the Northern Territory; largeareas of Queensland, particularly in the west, centralnorth and along the east coast; and extending fromnorthern and eastern Victoria through to central andwestern New South Wales. While coverage waspatchy, 10% of Australia recorded March rainfall inthe lowest 10% of records (decile 1).

Total rainfall in March 2015

Decile rank of total rainfall in March 2015

Significant rainfall was recorded in and just to the eastof the Gascoyne and Pilbara in Western Australia atthe beginning of the month, with persistentthunderstorms producing some daily totals above100 mm. Diurnal thunderstorms continued over thewest of Western Australia during the next few daysas an upper trough developed and enhanced theinstability to the west of Western Australia. On the4th a cloudband developed over the region asconvective activity to the north brought further rainfallto the Gascoyne, particularly on the 5th. Thecloudband dissipated on the 6th, with diurnalthunderstorms returning to bring further rainfall from

the 6th to 8th. Areas of the west and Kimberley sawcumulative totals for the first nine days of March of100 mm to 150 mm, with a few sites reporting over200 mm.

In the east, a slow-moving surface trough extendedover western Queensland, generating moderate totalsacross much of the Cape York Peninsula at the startof the month. Moist and humid winds continued tofeed into a low pressure trough across northernAustralia, with moderate to heavy falls recorded in theKimberley, across the Top End and large parts of theCape York Peninsula between the 5th and the 9th. Aseries of cold fronts tracked across Tasmania andsoutheast Australia producing moderate rainfall totalsin western Tasmania in the first half of the month.

Late on the 10th, tropical cyclone Nathan was locatedoff the coast of northern Queensland, northeast ofCooktown along the monsoon trough. Widespreadrain areas and thunderstorms generated moderate toheavy rainfall over much of the Cape York Peninsula,Gulf Country and north tropical coast of Queensland.Nathan remained near stationary off the tropical northQueensland coast before moving eastwards awayfrom northern Queensland on the 13th.

A tropical low developed to the northwest of WesternAustralia on the 11th, and generated widespreadthunderstorm activity, along with isolatedthunderstorms and showers about areas of thePilbara, Kimberley and Top End due to a humid, unstable airmass. The low deepened further, intensifying to become severe tropical cyclone Olwyn. The system made landfall three times along thePilbara and Gascoyne coasts: at Exmouth/Coral Bay,Coral Bay/Carnarvon, and south of Denham; all on the13th. The associated dense rainband produced heavyrainfall along the coast of Western Australia betweenKarratha and Geraldton. The weakening ex-tropicalcyclone Olwyn tracked southeast through the easternparts of the South West Land Division on the 14th. Anextensive rainband with embedded thunderstormsproduced moderate rainfall totals in the southwest ofWestern Australia while lighter rain fell across thesouthern coast.

A westerly airflow in the wake of a passing cold frontbrought moderate rainfall totals to western Tasmania, and light rain fell in parts of southern Victoria on the15th.

A broad surface trough extended throughsoutheastern Australia to a series of low pressuresystems located over the Great Australian Bight onthe 17th. Isolated thunderstorms formed near thetrough, bringing light falls to southeastern South

Australia, western Victoria and much of Tasmania, with moderate falls also recorded in northeasternNew South Wales.

By the 16th, tropical cyclone Nathan was almoststationary and located northeast of Cooktown, off thenorth Queensland coast. The system intensified onthe 18th to a severe category system. Bands ofembedded thunderstorms spiralled around severetropical cyclone Nathan. The system intensifiedfurther before making landfall early on the 20thbetween Cape Melville and Cape Flattery as acategory 4 system. Heavy rainfall was recorded alongthe north tropical coast, with falls exceeding 100 mm.As the system tracked west-northwest over far northQueensland, heavy rainfall was recorded across theCape York Peninsula to 9 am on the 21st. During the21st to 23rd, tropical cyclone Nathan tracked throughthe Gulf of Carpentaria and crossed the eastern TopEnd coast. Heavy rainfall totals were recorded inArnhem Land and parts of the northern Top End ofthe Northern Territory. The remnants of tropicalcyclone Nathan moved slowly westwards during the24th, away from the Top End along a trough of lowpressure located along the west coast of WesternAustralia by the 26th. Heavy rainfall was recordedacross the Top End, with moderate falls near WesternAustralia's Kimberley coast, and across much of thePilbara and Gascoyne.

A cold front tracked across southeastern Australia onthe 19th, with an associated rainband generatingmoderate rainfall totals in western Tasmania, withlight falls in southern Victoria. Light rain fell over

southern Western Australia, associated with a weaklow pressure system located over southwestWestern Australia. On the 21st, a surface troughextended through inland Queensland and into NewSouth Wales, generating thunderstorms and showers.Moderate rainfall totals of over 25 mm were recordedacross inland and southeastern Queensland, andnorthern New South Wales.

A deep surface trough extended from inlandQueensland through eastern New South Wales andinteracted with a cold front associated with a lowpressure system located in Bass Strait on the 23rd.Moderate rainfall was recorded across parts ofeastern New South Wales, southern Victoria, andTasmania in the wake of the frontal system.Thunderstorms and showers continued over parts ofQueensland's central interior and southeast, associated with the surface trough.
