This list of learning resources identifies high-quality resources that have been recommended by the Ministry of Education to complement the curriculum, Instrumental Jazz 10, 20, 30. This list will be updated as new resources are recommended and older ones are no longer available. A list of core learning resources can be

found on the Ministry of Education website.

(CAN) indicates that a Canadian contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Canadian content. (SK) indicates that a Saskatchewan person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes Saskatchewan content. (FNMI) indicates that a First Nations, Métis, or Inuit person contributed to the development of the resource and/or that it includes First Nations, Métis, or Inuit content.

Recommended Online Video Education Resources (ROVER) offers video programs that have been purchased by the ministry for use in PreK-12 schools. Each recommended program contains a hyperlink directly to the program and accompanying resources (if provided).

Other resources beyond those recommended in this list may effectively support Instrumental Jazz 10, 20, 30. It remains the responsibility of educators to preview and select materials that best meet the needs of their students, school, and community. Beginning Jazz GuitarAnnotationBeginning Jazz Guitar is the first book in a series of four books describing a step-by-step method for learning to play jazz guitar. This book includes the major scale and basic triad theory, extended chords and the modes, and a full length etude or song to go with every new concept introduced. The book is clearly organized into easily mastered segments and each chapter is divided into separate lessons. The “A” lessons covers harmonic and chordal topics and the “B” lessons covers improvisation. General information, tips on practicing are at the end (coda) of the book, and the music is written in standard notation and TAB.

The accompanying CD demonstrates the examples in the book.

Benny GolsonAnnotationThis DVD from The Jazz Master Class Series from Loyola includes an introduction by Tom Piazza and a performance and an interview with saxaphonist Benny Golson. It also includes student perfomances and Golson’s comments about the performances.

During his interview, Golson recalls the origin of the tunes he performs such as “Along Came Betty,” “Blue-n-Boogie,” “Killer Joe,” and “Whisper Not.”

Clark TerryAnnotationThis DVD set from The Jazz Master Class Series from NYU includes an introduction by Gary Giddins and a performance and an interview with trumpet player Clark Terry. It also includes student perfomances and Terry’s comments about the performances. During the clinic sections, Clark Terry interacts with students and demonstrates his suggestions. He recalls stories as he performs tunes such as “Perdido,” “I Don’t Want to be Kissed,” “Bye, Bye Blackbird,” and “Mumbles.”

A second DVD provides special features such as pre- and post-class interviews with the students, interviews with Gary Giddins and Clark Terry, and a transcription of “Perdido.”

Note: There is some profanity in the program and Terry discusses some players’ addiction struggles.

Note: Although this resource is dated in terms of technology, the information and suggestions provided are still useful in the classroom today.

(SK) This website describes the application “iHearit” which was developed by Trent Reschny, a Saskatchewan musician. The application allows the user to slow down or speed up audio files without changing the pitch, loop sections from one second to the entire song, navigate and cue playback by touching the song’s waveform image, and zoom in landscape to very fine detail such as one second across the screen. “iHearit” can be used with mp3, mp2, ogg, aif, or wav files. The application includes a file uploader that is compatible with a Mac, PC, or Linux computer. Users can share and/or view transcriptions on the ihearit.net forum.

This website describes the application “iReal b”. The application allows the user to play along without the melody and practice with a realistic sounding piano, bass, and drum accompaniments for any chord chart. It can also create, edit, print, share, and collect chord charts or your favourite songs for reference while practicing or performing. “iReal b” operates on the iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad, Android, Mac OS X, and the Amazon Kindle Fire.
