Emily!Soprano and PianoThe poetry of Emily Dickinson (1830–1886) is especially appealing due to the wide range of topics, diversity of mood and peculiar imagination of the poet. The writings are reflective, passionate, witty, sensuous, observant and ridiculously humorous. Her heart soars. Her mind pokes fun! Her love of Nature focuses on small things—birds, bees, meadows and a pond. In creating the musical settings, the composer endeavored to capture the spirit of the poetry, and of the poet, with songs diverse in style, and concise in form. Everything from romance to frogs is explored, briefly. Duration: 14'00"Medium 8317 $12.00

Songs from the High SierraHigh Voice and PianoThe five letters which provide the lyrics for the songs (adapted by the composer) were selected for their range of topics and sentiments. Some portray the wildlife in the mountains. Others extol the beauty of the Sierra. One expresses the whimsical/temperamental personality of the author, John Muir. And the final letter speaks reverently of the great trees, in a language both naturalistic and sacred. They are the “greatest light in the woods, the greatest light in the world.” Duration: 15'15"Medium8318 $13.00

Prayers and BlessingsBaritone or Bass-Baritone Solo, Violoncello, and Piano or OrganThese three songs are interconnected motivically, yet distinct in meter, tonality, and message. Peace and reverence flow throughout. In keeping with the simplicity and repetition of the text, the music is formed by a series of four-measure phrases (blessings), which are similar in con-tour, each spanning an interval of a fourth. Growth is achieved through repetition and some dynamic contrast. However, the principal aesthetic of this song is constancy and gentle flow. As the voice ends on low tones, the piano line rises, perhaps to the source of peace. Organist must play from the Full Score. Flowers of the SoulA Song Cycle for Soprano Solo, Violin, Violoncello and PianoSoprano, Violin, Violoncello, and Piano“Flowers of the Soul was commissioned by Ms. Jane Wait to commemorate the renovation of the beautiful rose gardens at YADDO, the artists’ colony in Saratoga Springs, New York. I have always found Emily Dickinson’s poetry to be lyrical and inspiring, and love the unique way in which she views the world through her beautiful imagery. The last poem in the cycle is a very early poem, and is quite different in style from her later work. Written with an underlying dance rhythm, it is also longer than all of the previous three poems combined.” —Henry Mollicone. Songs of the Human SpiritSoprano, Flute, and Piano“These songs, based upon old Native American texts are spiritual in nature, and include an invocation for solo flute, prayers, and a love song. I felt the need to include a flute in the accompaniment, al-though I have made no attempt to use authentic elements of Native American music, as I do not have the knowledge and skill to do this. The poems themselves have been my inspiration, and the music is in my own lyrical style.”—Henry Mollicone. Total duration: 11'26"Moderately Difficult8270, Full/Vocal Score $20.00Companion Product

Derri-Air(on the barroom ceiling)Baritone and Piano“The Central City Opera in Colorado has performed my one-act chamber opera The Face on the Barroom Floor beginning in 1978 each season for thirty-three years, a wonderful stroke of luck for a composer! Newport Classic isnow doing a feature length documentary film on Central City, the poem, and my opera. In the Teller House Bar at Central City, the actual portrait of “The Face” is painted on the floor; a few blocks away, there was a saloon (no longer in existence) where someone painted a portrait on the ceiling of a woman’s derriere in a Can Can dress! Recently we discovered Sid Squibb’s poem, which is a kind of parody of the more famous poem about “The Face.” I found the Squibb poem extremely amusing and fun, and set it to music in a quasi ragtime style.” —Henry Mollicone, September, 2012.Moderately Difficult7916 $8.75
