Common System Overview

Beam Position MonitorA beam position monitor measures the position of the particles in the accelerator pipe with nmresolution and <µs time resolution, enablingthe real-time control of the particle trajectory.

The Challenges:• Process extra-short (ps) electrical pulses• Wide input signal dynamic range (70dB)• Phase calibration of input signals down to 0.04°

at 500 MHz frequency• Effective input channel calibration through

compensation of temperature drifts and component differences

Digital LLRFDigital LLRF stabilizes amplitude and phase ofthe electromagnetic fields in the cavities ofparticle accelerators, insuring that the particlesare accelerated and not slowed down.

The Challenges:• Extreme measurement accuracy:

Amplitude error < 0.01% RMSPhase error < 0.01° RMS

• High local temperature stability with local control down to 0.01°C

• Fast feedback system response (<300ns)

Timing Distribution and Stabilization SystemThe system distributes an RF signal from a source to numerous end-stations around the machine, enabling a global synchronization down to the femto-second accuracy.

The Challenges:• Stabilization of GHz RF signal with extremely low

timing jitter (< 7fs) over 1.5km distance• Tightly locked distributed signals with peak-to-

peak drift < 30fs over long periods (3 days)• Short and completely automated warm-up period

(1hr), no operator involved

Instrument Development PlatformInstruments developed from this platform put together our domain knowledge in a simple design, offering great price / performance ratio.

The Challenges:• Design-time modularity: easily exchange system

components at design phase.• Short development time and prototyping phase:

from the idea to the solution in < 6 months.• Maintenance free (no moving parts → passive

cooling → PoE supply)

Red Pitaya

The Challenges:• Consumer market, different distribution channels• Form-factor: credit-card size• Price to access the market: < 400 EUR• Level of performance must match or exceed table top

instrumentation• Open Source community

Open-source general purpose laboratory instrument. “Bring your whole lab with you”.

Reliability and Performance• Thousands of units deployed and working reliably for 15+ years• Tens of scientific publications use I-Tech instruments as the reference benchmark

• „On our Booster beam, we collected much data and features, that we could not measure or even detect before.“

• ∼ Kees Scheidt, Diagnostics Head (ESRF, Grenoble)

• „Real-machine commisioning of booster synchrotron to storage ring is only about three weeks. The success is impossiblewithout help of I-Tech.“

• ∼ Kuotung Hsu (NSRRC Taiwan)
