Following an 8 week public nomination period, and the independent judge’s deliberations, Mary Mc Loughlin was declared the new Tallaght Person of the Year ‘14, at an awards dinner ceremony last Friday. The awards special guest was Tallaght native and former Miss Ireland Pamela Flood.

The awards were created by the Mortons in the early 1980s and handed over to the voluntary Tallaght Community Council shortly afterwards to run. The awards has 8 categories, where

community heroes across all sectors of the community are appreciated and recognised - across Tallaght, from Firhouse to Friarstown to Fettercairn.

This year saw the awards grow in both the number of nominations received and the number of attendees at the ticket only glitzy awards ceremony - showing the focus on the unsung community hero is strongly valued in Tallaght - a city with the caring heart of a village.

Mary McLoughlin, the new Person if the Year, is a doting grandmother, an active member of her parish bereavement team and founder of HOPE (Hold on Pain Eases).

HOPE is a support group, staffed by volunteers, based in Tallaght village and offers support to those impacted by suicide. Mary has lost 5 people to suicide and used her own personal experience to reach out and help others in a direct way.

Mary was a popular winner on the night and took over the role from Tallaght farmer, Donie Anderson. She will represent the community and the voluntary community council for the next 12 months.

Ireland and Tallaght native spoke of “her deep pride” to come home to make the presentation to the category winners and Mary at the red carpet event.

The full list of winners includes “Paddy Drac” and Ireland’s

Rosanna Davison 16INTERVIEWBy Rachel Lynch

It’s hard to believe that it was back in 2003 that Rosanna Davison became a household name. Having won Miss World while representing Ireland she then went on to map out a successful modelling career for herself, which has seen her become

into modelling?

God it feels like years ago now,

year of my degree in UCD and I signed up to do the UCD fashion show which back then was the biggest student fashion show in Europe I think. So everyone said you have got to do it it’s great fun, so really it started from there, that was in March 2003, and I was actually selected through the fashion show to represent Ireland in Miss Hawaiian Tropic, which was to be held in Hawaii and was a bikini competition.

I thought about it and was delighted I was asked but turned it down as it would have clashed with my exams and I was very studious. So really it just started from there and then I did a couple more press calls and then I was actually scouted

in Dun Laoghaire shopping centre to participate in Miss Dun Laoghaire in 2003 and the winner then would go on to Miss Ireland and I actually really wasn’t into it. It was a bit of a hobby, I had other career ambitions so I said no initially to that but the girl was very persuasive so she eventually got me to enter the competition.

Was it something you always wanted to do? You seem very career driven, was modelling something that came out of nothing?

Yeah it came out of nowhere really, it was something that never really crossed my mind. I never thought I would be good enough or that people would want me or any of those things. I think for a young girl it’s something that maybe you

dream of doing. I did watch Miss World on TV and thought wow those girls are amazing but that could never be me so in your wildest dreams you couldn’t imagine being a model. So it wasn’t something I realistically thought could happen, it really was a career path that found me, but then when you are presented with opportunities you run with them.

What would be your advice to young girls pursuing the same career path? You are very well educated something that might surprise people who are unaware of your background. I hope you don’t take that as an insult but it’s not something people expect.

No I totally get you and I agree. People tend to read about you in the tabloids and they just like to box you off. It’s human nature to want to categorise people into different sections. People say oh well she’s a model, she takes care of herself she’s obviously dim, she making up for other things but I have always been into education and it’s important for me to be a well rounded individual, to have career interests but to have other interests outside of that.

It was really important for me to go back to university after Miss World after the year I took out and get my degree. What I would say to young girls is

to have a backup plan. Modelling is a tough industry and you are only as good as your last job.

may be hot property one month and then not so much the next. So you really do need to take the opportunities as they come and enjoy them but have a back-up plan. It’s a great career in terms of the travelling you get to do and the people you meet.

So in so many respects it’s a really good career, it’s just because you are essentially self employed that sort of side means it can be unstable and you don’t know where your next job is coming from so it depends on the type of person you are.

You have had a very successful career and one that continues right through the year, what in your opinion has been the greatest moment so far?

Page 17: InTallaght EDITION 62

it really wasa career path

that found me

Page 18: InTallaght EDITION 62

what i would say to young girls is definitely to get your education

Page 19: InTallaght EDITION 62

19 Rosanna DavisonCareer wise? God there are so many different elements to it. I mean I still count my lucky stars that I’m still booked for jobs and I suppose I will continue to do it for as long as I can, but I guess winning Miss World.

Irish people are incredibly supportive and they really get behind people from the country and Irish people on an international stage get so much support. Being a small country it means that word spreads. So it was a huge honour for me to represent Ireland and I have had so much support and positivity since.

What was the process of Miss World like?

Well we spent a month touring China. We went from South to North and everywhere in between. It was an incredible experience but I was 19 years old and I did get home sick at times. My parents were able

days or so of the competition even though we were heavily chaperoned and I only spent a half an hour in the lobby with them each day, but it was good to have them there.

competition was held on this island called Sanya, it is sort of the Hawaii of China and it was just tropical and gorgeous.

be somewhere nice like that. Then I was Miss World for the year and I travelled all over the world. I spent a lot of time in China, Canada, the States, Sri Lanka, Ethiopia, and all around Europe, these places you would never really visit. So it really was

a really educational eye opening experience for a 19 year old.

You were just 19 and you were the spotlight of the world, was that tough?

but you learn very quickly in that situation. I was expected to dress a certain way and I had to learn how to public speak. I would land in Canada and would be driven straight to a function and I had to get up on stage and address the audience of the president, dignitaries, ambassadors all these heads of corporations so you learn very quickly how to do that, and just how to behave really to certain situations in public. The media level did affect me initially if there were mean stories out there but you again learn to pay little attention to it, the nature of the news is a 24 hour cycle so people forget.

Speaking of the media, there was a lot of media interest in your Playboy cover from 2012, I believe you initially turned the offer down

Yes, I was initially offered it around 2010, and at that stage I talked to my parents and my Dad said it’s great to be offered it’s an honour to be offered but at these stage I was working a lot in Germany but I had a more wholesome family image and he just said leave it a while and think about it again in another few years, and I did. Then in those few years I ended up getting a new manager in Germany and he had a good

relationship with Playboy and a couple of his other clients had done it. So he was approached again and he asked me did I want to do it and I felt at that stage I was ready to go ahead and do it.

I was around 27/28 and I just felt at that stage of my career, I had been going for 10 years and had nothing to lose and I probably wouldn’t want to do it in my 30’s so it was the right time. I felt comfortable with myself to do it. Although doing Playboy is very liberating it does make you address all your little insecurities of your body and just face them, because you are there in the open air with nowhere to hide. I had a lot of control over the shoot, from the location to the

So you were very much involved in the whole process.

Yes and that was one thing I was determined about and It was one

very certain I didn’t want it to be airbrushed because I think it can look very fake if it’s too airbrushed and you want it to be real you want people to know you really are there on that beach.

There have been many major milestones over the years for you Rosanna but this year saw one of the biggest, your wedding!

I was lucky that we had a lot of support and we had a great wedding planner called Tara Fay but you still have to make an awful lot of decisions yourself

Page 20: InTallaght EDITION 62

Rosanna Davison 20and go to all the meetings and tastings and all the rest. We really wanted something abroad, we had been to Andrea Roche’s wedding in Ibiza a couple of years ago and the night we were there actually we said if we ever get married this is a gorgeous venue, ‘cause its intimate enough and it comes out beautiful in photographs.

So when we got engaged and started talking about the wedding process I actually looked all over Europe online through recommendations at different venues and couldn’t

why don’t we look back at the place in Ibiza so we booked to go over and look at it and we booked it. Then we found out, I’m not Catholic and he is so we couldn’t get married together in a Catholic Church over there so we had to do a ceremony like

Then we decided rather than

have a humanist ceremony and you have to do that in a registered venue so we chose the Merrion Hotel because it was central enough. We had a really nice ceremony and lunch with close family and friends and then we did the Ibiza wedding which was the main walking down the aisle and white dress.

Then because there was a lot of people who didn’t go to Ibiza we had a party in the Powerscourt Hotel a couple of weeks after. So between all that there was a lot of planning. It was a full time job I can tell you that, I actually had to cut down on work. You want it to be perfect and for us we wanted to include everybody.

What about the dress, it’s one of the most important parts of the wedding, did it take you a long time to choose the right one?

For the main dress I was kind of sure about what I didn’t want. I had tried on so many dresses over the years for work and I know what suits me and what doesn’t. Initially when I went into Myrtle Ivory which is where I got the dress in the end I tried on a lot of slinky dresses...but then I tried on a more princess dress and seeing all the fabric and how full it was I decided there and then I wanted a fuller dress. So it didn’t take me that long.

What would your advice to us ladies out there to help with looking our best?

I’m big into wearing an SPF every day, my Mum got me into that about 10 years ago. I wear factor 50 on my face every single day of the year no matter what the temperature.

Then the usual things that are boring but they work like sleep, water and exercising as much as I can to work up a sweat because when you sweat you push all the toxins out of your blood and your body, there are

apart from the obvious ones like weight maintenance and health, so I think for your complexion it makes a big difference.

Finally Rosanna what’s coming up next for you?

Well speaking of the beauty

website at the moment which I actually started earlier this year then I had to stop because of the wedding, but it will hopefully launch early next year, it’s going to be a website with all my top nutrition recipes, tips, articles and then my beauty tips and products, tips for brides.

So I’m really excited about it because

everything I am asked about in my

INTERVIEWBy Padraig Conlon

Houdini are a four piece band from Tallaghtformed in March of this year. On the verge of releasing their self titled debut EP this month we sat down with the lead singer Aaron Cranley, bassist Shane Cranley, keyboard player Ian Cullen and drummer Ciaran Higgins to discuss their record, playing the Electric Picnic and how U2 are damaging music.

Congratulations on the EP, I’ve enjoyed listening to it this week, it’s an excellent piece of work.

Aaron: Thank you very much, I’m glad you liked it. We’re all really excited about it, it’s turned out better than we could ever have expected or imagined. I can’t wait now for people to hear it.

And it’s produced by Leo Pearson, the legend who worked on two U2 albums, what was it like working with him?

Aaron: It was amazing, we learned so much. It was so cool because we actually recorded it in his studio in Kilkenny which is a converted shed. What I really enjoyed about working with Leo is that he’s very straight talking. We’ve worked with people in the past who don’t tell you exactly

what they think but Leo will tell you. In a diplomatic way! Leo is a songwriter himself so for him to like our music is a great

great to work with.

How long did it take you guys to record the EP?

Aaron: The whole thing took us four days, over a span of six months. Ian:our sound though when we

that we had to get better, it gave us the belief to go on and do the rest of the EP.

Aaron: We’d been playing as another band, then we decided to stop gigging and give up on that. It was a good experiment at the time. After that I went away into my shed basically

for months of writing. What I didn’t like I threw away. Nothing Here came along and was the

we recorded it, and because it sounded so good to us, we

on with the other songs. The last two songs we’ve done on the EP we think are better than anything else we’ve done. It’s a great feeling.

Who does most of the songwriting?

Aaron: Well we have a way of answering this: I kind of bring the bones of the song to the

it. We all collaborate.

What bands have

Higgs: Muse.

22Houdini 22Ian: Coldplay or anything from the 80’s. Aaron: Pink Floyd, although I

them in our music. Before you’re in a band you think “oh I’m gonna write this” and then when four people come together it’s completely different.

What I’ve always liked about this band is that we’re limited in different ways but what comes out at the end is great and sounds better than before we all contributed to it.

While still only in the

this summer you got to do something that many other bands never get to do and play the Electric Picnic. How did you enjoy the experience?

Shane: That was amazing, we played on the Friday so we got to enjoy the rest of the festival as fans, what a great weekend that was!Aaron: I couldn’t believe we were at the Picnic, it was surreal that just three months after we’d started we were playing such a legendary festival and to be so well received by the crowd. It’s great to have on the CV.Ian: I didn’t stay around for the whole weekend, I’m a coward! Aaron: You missed a great weekend! We stayed in the artists’ campsite which was cool.

Did you get to meet any of the other bands?

Higgs: We saw a good few of them walking around but you don’t want to be the guy going up annoying people at a festival

Page 23: InTallaght EDITION 62

2323 Houdiniso we left them alone!Aaron: I saw the singer from Mumford and Sons walking by at one point but I don’t like Mumford and Sons so I thought “no you’re alright!” We decided to play it cool!

It was actually very funny when

were trying to get our van close enough to the stage so we wouldn’t have too far to carry the gear. We kept asking people “Where’s the production tent?” No one working there knew where it was. Security guards, everything!

So we got into the production tent for the main stage and there were all these tour buses and stuff and our little van and everyone is like “How the hell did you get in?! you’re not allowed in here!” Outcast’s big tour bus was behind us trying to get in!

The video for Hold Our Own is very impressive, who’s idea was it to get you lads prancing around in short-shorts?!

Ian: Yeah it was good “crack” alright making it! You can actually thank The Square for that video, that’s where we got the costumes. It was my original idea but it got out of hand. It was just Aaron and me initially in the shop and he wouldn’t try them on so I tried them on and I’m standing there asking him how they looked on me. I think the shop assistant thought we were a couple!Aaron: Well I did say your ass looked really well in them!

Shane: Initially the video was supposed to be more serious but when we got out to the woods to shoot it we just started messing. It was so funny, somebody walked by with their dog and you could tell they were thinking “Why are they marching around in matching speedos?”

Has growing up in

your music at all?

Aaron: I originally wouldn’t have thought so but in the last while I’ve changed my mind and I think it has. The

underdog complex you develop makes you want to prove yourself that little bit more.

When we see other people doing well we want to prove ourselves as well on the same stage. There are so many good bands from this area and we’re always happy to see them do well. I think being from here gives you something that

area wouldn’t have, it gives a colour to your music.

Finally lads what are your hopes for the EP and what it can potentially do for your careers?

Aaron: Well we really want people to buy it, not just because we get money for it but I really think people should buy music as opposed to downloading it.

It was all well and good U2 with their free album but I think it does absolutely nothing for emerging artists because it’s giving people the idea that music is free.

Young kids today think you’re a sap if you walk into HMV and buy a CD. So U2 doing that reinforces that belief. It’s all very well for king Bono after he’s sold millions of records but it’s kind of shooting everyone else in the foot. I think U2 pulled up the ladder.

It also shows how out of touch they are that they didn’t realise that they would annoy a lot of people by uploading their album onto people’s iTunes accounts without their permission. If you don’t like the band, and they’re on your iTunes when you didn’t ask them to be, then you’re really going to hate them aren’t you?!

If they were more in touch with things they might have given away the single free and let people decide for themselves. I don’t adhere to the belief that there’s no such thing as bad publicity because there is, that was bad publicity for U2 no doubt about it.

EP Houdini will be released on Thursday 18th December and will be available to buy from iTunes.www.facebook.com/houdiniband

SQ. MAGAZINE

EDITION 44 December 2014

It’s hard to believe 2015 is almost here and soon 2014 will be a memory!

This year has been a very exciting year for all of us involved at The Square, and I thought I would take this time

things we have achieved.

On Thursday 22nd November, we had our Santa arrival and I was absolutely blown away by the support we got from the people of Tallaght and the surrounding areas. We had over 15,000 at the event and the amount of positive feedback we got afterwards was huge. This year, we have also decorated the Centre Mall with our Disney Frozen theme with all of the characters and a sing-along show on our atrium sails every 30 minutes from 4pm. It’s great to see so many little kids looking up and singing their hearts out to Let it Go. The Centre looks very festive this year with many of our shops getting into the spirit. Santa has built his grotto at the East Entrance and is looking forward to seeing you all.

Christmas came early for me this year as in September we announced the fantastic news that we had been granted planning permission for an extension to the Centre. This development will enhance and modernise our current offering with the addition of a large department store, a multi-story car-park and an additional 8 big box units.

a major amount of improvement work done this year. We have invested in a new toilet block on Level 2 as many of you had commented on these being dated and needing to be upgraded.

The response so far from the public has been fantastic. Our disabled facilities and our baby feeding areas really are impressive and will help cater for everyone who visits the Centre and this will continue in 2015 with new facilities on Levels 1 and 3.

Our aim is to bring you a fresh new design and image and we have done a lot of work in the background enhancing a lot of areas. We have also introduced a lot more signage to help you navigate the Centre

The Cheeky Monkey Play Area again this year has been a massive success and very popular with our families. We have also had a great response from our Oopsadaisy Toddlers Group on Wednesday mornings which is free to all parents with young children.

We will continue to improve these facilities for families and next year we will be adding a new kids park out in the East after Santa heads back to the North Pole and we will be relocating the soft play area to an even bigger area on Level 3.

Another fantastic feature is our Aquarium on Level 2. This year we saw the introduction of Snappy our new shark character who sneakily laid an egg in the tank which generated a lot of excitement from children and parents. There has been a real buzz since the tank was installed and it’s amazing to see the positive reaction to the many different varieties of

Aquariums for supporting us with this.

We have continued to support great causes in the local community this year and our Community Champion and Little Star awards have recognised manyworthwhile and dedicated individuals

and groups from the local area. We have also done a lot of work with the National Children’s Hospital and supported many local charities, giving them a platform and a voice.

We are also proud to once again sponsor Shamrock Rovers and our friends in ITT Student Union. Our student VIP discount card has now over 3000 users who all

We have also welcomed a number of new stores to the Square family: DV8, Gismo, Subway, Style Club, Just Wing It, El Porko Loco, Wok to Walk, Healthier Choice, Whitening at the Square and coming very soon are the much anticipated Nandos on Level 3. In the New Year we will be starting our transition of Level 1 so watch this space!!

All of this has been made possible because of the support that we get from the people of Tallaght and I would like to personally thank all of you for your continued support. We really want you to be proud of the Centre and to be the true Town Centre. The team here will be working very hard next year to make this happen.

I would also like to take this opportunity on behalf of the Square, to wish you and your loved ones a very Happy Christmas. We all have the same wish, that this coming year will be better than the one before and bring us more happiness. My hope is that we can continue to be your

Santa’s arrival here at the Square was one of the biggest ever events to date on our calendar. The festivities started early on Level 1 as people gathered early to make sure they got to a good spot to see Santa.

Thousands of people gathered on Level 1 to see the fantastic stage we had prepared for the pantomime which, by the response on our Social Media and the happy faces on the night, was a huge success.

As Santa arrived to a huge

display went off over the stage which really added to the magical atmosphere. Santa was visited by his friends, Jack Frost and the dancing elves who entertained the whole crowd.

We would like to thank everyone that came along on the night and helped us celebrate this very special event with us. We hope everyone had a great night.

This year we are delighted to bring the magic of the greatest animated movie of all time, Frozen, to The Square. We have brought the magic and splendor of Arendelle to the Centre Mall, featuring characters from the movie.

One addition that we are really proud of is the visually spectacular show on the huge sails starting at 4pm daily and showing every half hour until Christmas. Children and adults alike seem to love the show and its great to see all the smiling faces on the children as the theme song from Frozen, Let It Go, is played throughout the Centre.

We also have a fully designed Frozen themed unit on Level 3 opposite Specsavers. The beautifully designed unit features more fantastic characters from the movie in a wonderful frozen forest scene.

Don’t forget to like us on Facebook and keep an eye on our page as we have dozens of Frozen Goodies to giveaway between now and Christmas Eve including DVD’s and this year’s most wantedElsa Dolls!

Peter Mark store manger Oliver Coleman was delighted to have his salon named winners of their respective group. He said “Given the fact we re-launched the salon just a year ago it’s great, we have gone from strength to strength. We have a core team of very experienced stylists and it’s great to see the younger stylists coming through and proving themselves against such great competition”.

Finally it’s here the one we have all been waiting for. The Hobbit: The Battle of The Five Armies brings to an epic conclusion the adventures of Bilbo Baggins, Thorin Oakenshield and the Company of Dwarves.

This Christmas sees the remake of one of the all time greats, Annie.

The new contemporary adaption of the musical of the same name from 1982 is produced by Jay-Z and Will Smith. It stars Quvenzhané Wallis in the title role and Jamie Foxx in the role of Will Stacks, an update of Daddy Warbucks.

The story begins in modern day New York City, Annie is an orphan/foster child living under the cruelty of Miss Hannigan played by Cameron

Diaz. Originally left by her parents as a baby with the promise that they’d be back for her someday, it’s been a tough few years for the young girl who dreams of a family life. But everything’s about to change when business tycoon and New York mayoral candidate Will Stacks advised by his personal assistant, Grace, and his shrewd and scheming campaign advisor, Guy visits the orphanage and agrees to take Annie under his wing in order to secure more votes from the public for the good image his generosity brings.

Stacks believes he’s her guardian angel, but Annie’s self assured nature and bright, “sun will come out tomorrow” outlook on life just might mean it’s the other way around.

back in 2007, with no further developments until 2013 and since then it has generated plenty of excitement throughout the world. Despite Colin Firth pulling out of voicing Paddington himself it does still star Hugh Bonneville, Julie Walters and Nicole Kidman.

After a fatal earthquake destroys his home in the rainforests of Peru, a young bear makes his way to London in search of a new home. Finding himself lost and alone at Paddington station, he begins to realise that city life is not all he had imagined.

This is until he meets the kindly Brown family. They read the label around his neck saying “Please look after this bear” and offer him a temporary haven.

It looks as though his luck has changed until this rarest of bears catches the eye of a museum taxidermist Millicent Clyde who has designs on Paddington’s rare Peruvian hide.

This live-action feature is based on the series of popular children’s books by Michael Bond which is sure to stir nostalgic interest from parents who enjoyed reading about Paddington’s various adventures during their own childhoods.

Music 40

Dublin six-piece Oki’s Wagon have

single Shake, on November 20th, which will feature on their forthcoming album, A Curious Dose, set to be released in January next year.

With Shake the band manages to stay traditional and be innovative at the same time. It’s a mix of blues, folk

every member of the band, something that makes it very diverse and eclectic. The instrumentation is kept natural, without any digital hurley burley, and the banjo and mandolin are the perfect ingredients.

It’s topped by singer Audrey Gleeson’s

in all the right places. Her voice is

was that I would love to hear her sing a ballad as well, something I’m sure I’ll get a chance to when the album is released.

The newcomers keep their debut track short and sweet with convincing promises of what’s to come. They have already made it to Electric Picnic and Jack of Diamonds Rhythm and Roots Festival and I’d say they have a festival summer of 2015 in sight.

It’s different and danceable, muddy and memorable - exactly what Irish music needs right now!

Last year Indina Menzel stunningly encouraged the world to Let It Go as ice princess Elsa in Frozen, the biggest Disney animation of all time.

She has now gone from Broadway to Disney, and from Disney to Christmas anthems. Christmas came early this year when her festive album was released on October 14th in the US and November 3rd this side of the pond.

She is known for her charm and humour and she can be quite outspoken - as she said in a TIME interview about the early release: “I think that’s ridiculous! I don’t understand. I’ve been asking the label to tell me why. I completely understand if people aren’t ready for it until Thanksgiving. That’s when Christmas comes alive for me. My record label will hate me for saying that, but it’s the truth!”

The album contains old festive favorites, such as Baby It’s Cold Outside, All I Want For Christmas Is You, Silent Night, When You Wish Upon A Star and Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas, all with Menzel’s signature stamp on them.

With Michael Bublé becoming almost as Christmassy as mulled wine and Santa himself, it’s no surprise that he joins Menzel on the classic Baby It’s Cold Outside. The song has a bustling atmosphere and with

and charming – one of the most remarkable on the album. Another song that stands out is Joni Mitchell’s River, which Menzel covers just beautifully.

album however, is the only original song, December Prayer, which is written for the album by Menzel, Walter Afanasieff, and Charlie Midnight. It could give chills even in

capturing. With lyrics such as “In the touch of a friend, in the breath of a child, in the eyes of a soldier coming home to his mother’s grateful smile”, the tenderness and melancholia may hit you right in the cockles of the heart.

It is one of the songs that best represents her voice and I’d say more original songs would have been very welcome in-between all the classic carols that are covered

With that said, the carols are a must for the festive season and Menzel’s covers should be enough to warm up your Christmas spirit and soothe you in to the yule-tide mood.

Tech Christmas GiftsIt’s nearly Christmas, and many of you are looking for tech gadgets and products to give or receive we here at InTallaght are going to take a look at some of the products which are available this year.

The PS4 and Xbox One for the second year in a row are going head to head to be the biggest selling games console at Christmas. The two of them are fantastic games consoles with both consoles featuring fantastic games which are sure to put a smile on the face of anyone who receives either console.

At the moment both consoles are the same price in Argos at €379.99, it is an expensive gift, and that is before you purchase a game for either one. A game for either console will set you back another €50-€70 depending on the game.

If you’re looking for a console that is more affordable this Christmas a Wii U is available for €219.99, the Wii is €89.99 and the PS Vita will set you back €202.99 (all prices are from Argos and correct at time of going to print).

Another tech product which has been a staple of many a Christmas morning for the past few years is the brand new mobile phone, and two of the most popular this year are the Samsung Galaxy S5 which was released in February and the Apple iPhone 6 which was released in September of this year.

Like the big consoles both the Samsung Galaxy S5 and the iPhone 6 will cost big bucks with the iPhone 6 costing you €649.99-€679.99 in Carphone Warehouse and the Samsung Galaxy S5 will set you back in the region of €529.99-€619.99 also in Carphone Warehouse.

However there are cheaper options available to you as Carphone Warehouse has smartphones available from the low price of €39.99, which would

Tablets along with mobile phones and games consoles will be under many a Christmas tree this year and the consensus of best tablet on the market at the moment is the iPad Air 2 which

will cost you between €479.00 and €709.00. The cheapest version of the iPad Air 2 has 16GB worth of data whereas the most expensive has 128 GB worth of memory. Aside from that both tablets seem to be the same with the same size screen, battery life and weight.

If you’re looking for a cheaper option Tesco has the answer for you with their €150 tablet,

although not the cheapest on the market it is known as a good tablet for the basics especially if all you want to do is surf the

email.

These are just some of the top tech products and a few alternatives which are around this Christmas, hope to see you back reading InTallaght in the New Year.

Games of 2014 ReviewFor the last edition of 2014 we here at InTallaght thought we would have a look back at some of the biggest and best games of the year, and also the ones which didn’t live up to the hype.

First off I had to begin this review of the year with my favourite game of the year and that is Oddworld: New And Tasty, the remake of the classic 1997 video game from the PlayStation One.

This was a thoroughly enjoyable game and because of this I was eventually able to complete Abe’s Oddysee, albeit an easier more accessible game than its much harder original. However even though it was featured in the game section already this

year, because it was this good, and cheap, it deserved a second mention.

EA Sports UFC featuring our very own Conor McGregor in the game was supposed to push the franchise on following the success of the UFC Undisputed series from THQ, however this game didn’t live up to the hype. It looks great but no UFC game has been able to surpass the brilliant UFC Undisputed from 2009, or even the solid UFC Undisputed 2010.Perhaps I was expecting too

much from EA Sports because of the boxing series Fight Night, however EA Sports UFC is a solid

for them, it remains to be seen if they can improve on it whenever a sequel is released.

Although it is not the most popular sport in Ireland basketball has had some great games over the years and the leader in NBA games at the moment comes from 2K Sports. NBA2K15 is a fantastic game with incredible graphics for a sports game, which is only outdone by Madden NFL 15.

NBA 2K15 has made improvements throughout the game over last years instalment with mini pregame shows before every game which keep you entertained while the game loads and a whole host of other updates. The online gaming experience for 2K15 has been criticised and hopefully they can

game is brilliant.

Infamous Second Son was one of the games which I was most excited for this year and having bought it, much like the

UFC game I was let down. This is a franchise which was great on the PS3 featuring the main character Cole McGrath however in Second Son you play as Delsin Rowe, who is incredibly annoying.

The side missions in the game become increasingly repetitive as you’re doing the same ones over and over again but in a different location. Infamous is a franchise which will hopefully come back stronger, like EA Sports UFC, if another game is released.

Although originally released in Marchof 2013 on the PS3 and Xbox 360

etc., Tomb Raider received a

PS4 and Xbox One this year and it was brilliant. The side missions in the game are interesting and the plot keeps you interested all the way through to the end of the game, and the subsequent sequel which will be released next year will hopefully improve on this game.

That’s it for our look back on the year’s video games with some great games and a few disappointments thrown in for good measure. Hopefully 2015 will have some amazing games for everyone to enjoy, Nollaig Shona.

that Peugeot’s engineers have tinkered and tweaked the 1.6-litre turbocharged engine (familiar in its basic form to anyone who’s ever driven a Mini Cooper S) so that it now develops a whopping 270hp.

Combined with a diesel-like thump of 320Nm, that’s enough motive power to push the RCZ-R from standstill to 100kmh in 5.9secs.

The styling like many models in this category won’t appeal to everyone but that doesn’t mean you can’t appreciate the eye caching exterior. The RCZ R was designed to turn heads and it combines elegance with performance.

bigger, 19-inch wheels give the RCZ R a strikingly unique look. For me the standout features have to be the twin exhausts, the dark titanium coloured headlights which match well with the matte black roof.

As soon as you open the door you’ll discover a race car like interior. The driver friendly seat is ideal for enjoying the RCZ R’s dynamic handling. The small steering wheel, short gear stick,

distinct aluminium handle with red trim and new bucket seats with reinforced back support actively contribute to ensuring an enjoyable ride.

I must compliment Peugeot on what they have done here. They have produced a car that won’t rival the previous aspirational models reviewed but they have provided the public with an affordable option for getting a real taste of some unique class at a fraction of what other models in their bracket are priced at.How much will it cost you? If we take the petrol 1.6 THP 270 bhp you are looking at an impressive €53,655. It may seem quite expensive to some but when you consider what you are getting and compare it to some of the astronomical prices we have had to date you could say you are getting a bargain. Even the road tax is pretty decent and works out at €390 per annum.

Boden do the Double!

The Ballyboden Under 15A hurlers completed a dramatic Championship and League Double on Sunday November 23rd when they beat a strong Lucan side in the Division One league decider.

The game took place at Bray Emmets where both teams looked to play attacking hurling and it was Lucan who had the

a 0-7 to 0-4 half time lead which would’ve been greater if it wasn’t for the heroics of Conor O’Donoghue in the Boden nets.

Boden came out a different side in the second half and the redeployment of

range free from O’Donoghue proved to be the catalysts for an exciting revival from the Firhouse Road side.

A Madden goal saw Boden lift their heads with excellent interplay from Karl Reddy and Kevin Lalor creating the chance for Daniel O’Riordan to slot over a brilliant point from play.

Lucan, however, would not be denied their shot at the title and continued to keep pace with Boden as Ben Coffey and Emmet Allan kept them in the game.

It was a Reddy burst which lead to the

Lucan off when his low ball into the middle was struck home by substitute Ciaran Cashman to give Boden a one point lead.

Ben Coffey again had other ideas as he responded to level the game with minutes to spare and both sides looked desperate to force the matter as they battled for possession across the park.

The game changer came when Boden’s Ross McCormack fought hard to provide the space and pass for Shane Kennedy who coolly slotted over the game’s winning score and Boden held on to take home their title after a thrilling encounter with the unlucky Lucan side.

Final Score: Boden 2-9 Lucan 0-14

In other news Ballyboden also held their annual Gala Dinner Dance on Saturday November 22nd at the Red Cow Moran Hotel where they celebrated the Senior

and looked back on the 2004 All Ireland winning ladies football team.

Greenhills Team GTA On The Up!

The junior youth and development programme at Greenhills Tomiki Aikidi Ryu has gone from strength to strength in recent times! Team GTA did it again

when they were hugely successful at only their second international event in High Wycombe in the UK.

The team travelled to the British Aikidi Association Junior Open South and had sixteen competitors competing among 100 athletes where, following on from their debut in June, they had had an excellent medal haul taking home a total of 1 gold, 9 silver and 3 bronze medals.

The Junior Youth and Development programme began in 2012 with only a handful of students involved but has grown in popularity ever since. Originally based in the Belgard Community Centre the momentum and success of the club has meant relocating to a bigger space at Greenhills Community Centre where since May of this year the programme has developed into two sections of junior 5-9 and youth 10-16. It is the only club in Ireland with a dedicated youth development programme for this form of martial arts

The club is associated with the British Aikido Association (BAA) and runs three competitions a year including the recent trip to High Wycombe and a trip to Leeds for their international debut earlier in the year. The club is always looking for new, enthusiastic students to join their ever improving team and can be found on Facebook: Greenhills Tomiki Aikidi Ryu.

Round Towers Clondalkin welcome Pieta House

11 Footballers participated in the Pieta House Tournament in Monastery Road on Saturday, November 22nd. Teams were split and played in a Cup and Shield Tournament that was run over the course of two hours.

John Quinn of Pieta House commented: “On behalf of Pieta House I want to thank Round Tower for the invite here today and for wearing the Mind Your Men jerseys. Pieta House engages with people suicidal, self-harming or feeling down within themselves. You can call them free of charge at 01 6010000 or visit www.pieta.ie. This has been a great event and I thank all involved for their support.”

The club also played host to the annual Round Towers Crafts Fair on Sunday November 30th and saw a huge turnout as local craftsmen and women displayed their works and provided some great Christmas gift ideas to the people in attendance.

There is nothing more enjoyable than making something yourself, and for years the Irish Countrywomen’s Association has been at the forefront of Irish craft. This Christmas we have the ideal present for those who love creativity.

“The ICA has always practised the teaching of crafts and we hold regular craft competitions and craft displays at our own meetings and at events nationwide. This new book contains 40 practical projects to inspire you to have a go. The book caters for those just beginning while also providing more challenging patterns for those capable. It’s important to note that all the craft instructions are easy to read and the stunning photography sees this book become much more than just a simple instruction manual. The imagery alone will encourage you to get crafting.

It’s a game that is fun and easy to play. First you must set everyone up into teams, the more people on a team the better as it will help with the guessing!

The content of the board game is both Irish and international and is based on names and topics that most people will be familiar with.

brands and many many more! Because of the vast varieties of topics the game has an appeal to all regardless of gender, age or interest.

Each group has 30 Seconds in which to guess the correct answer on the card described to them. It’s not just the guessing that is the fun part, whoever has been chosen to explain the word will also have a great time, believe me it’s not as easy as it looks to explain something without unintentionally giving away the answer!

57 FitnessFEATUREBy Rachel Lynch

I am now a number of weeks into my PT sessions with Nikki in the Green Isle Hotel.

I’m delighted to say I have begun to see changes to my body already. I have already dropped a dress size and feel as though I have toned up more than ever before.

One of my main goals setting out was to work on the shape of my legs and also the extra weight around my hips. Nikki has been great with helping me target those areas. What’s great about the sessions is that all my exercises have been noted, and on average I would say 80% of these can be worked on from home.

Each session was devised in a certain way so as to focus on a certain area each time, whether it is the legs, arms, stomach and

from home tough as I don’t think people push themselves hard enough. With Nikki guiding me not only do I work harder but she also ensures I am doing the exercises correctly.

One of the most important things I have learned over the past few weeks is that there are plenty of different exercises out there. Who would have thought boxing would be a

work and believe me when I say it Nikki can get a whole lot done in just a half an hour!

again strengthening my core. As I have said my main focus was on my legs so I had a number of sessions devoted to work on that.

As I explained in the last edition food is still pretty much the same, although I haven’t had a takeaway in a few weeks. Other than that I wouldn’t consider myself to be “on a diet”, just more conscious of the foods that are good for me.

Overall I have really enjoyed this whole process and have already booked myself in for another 24 sessions with Nikki at the Green Isle Hotel. If you want to shift a bit of weight or tone up then I can’t suggest a better way to do it. Even just to learn about how to use all the equipment available to you when you go to the gym.

It’s very tough to motivate yourself but when you have a time and date set for your training you have no option but to get up and go. After the hour is up you feel fantastic and I can guarantee you will see a change in only a matter of weeks, I did.
