“ C o u r s e s ” ISGS reconceptualizes the issues of global society through a spectrum of mutually interlinking keywords, summarizes them into six research domains and establishes them as “courses”, the basic units of education. Students can enter the ISGS in April or October. The entrance interviews for the April semester will be held in February, and for the October semester in July. I n t e r n a t i o n a l P r o g r a m The Graduate School of Integrated Sciences for Global Society (hereafter “ISGS”) offers an International Master’s and Doctoral Programs in the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences, in which lectures and guidance are taught in English.

Program Overview ISGS was built on the predecessor Graduate School of Social and Cultural Studies, which was founded in 1994. ISGS is a unique interdisciplinary and international institution, offering a broad range of courses, which aims to break the barriers between the humanities, social sciences, and natural sciences. Faculty from different fields routinely team-teach, creating a vibrant approach in knocking down disciplinary barriers. Graduate students in the English-language International Programs can specialize in one of six courses: 1. Comprehensive Earth Sciences 2. Comprehensive Science of Biological Environment 3. International Cooperation, Security and Safety 4. Social Diversity and Coexistence 5. Language, Media and Communication 6. Comprehensive East Asian and Japanese Studies

Among the subjects offered in these courses are Geology, Petrology, Mineralogy, Geophysics, Biological Diversity, Entomology, Molecular Evolution, Ecological Anthropology, Geography, International Relations, Political Science, History of Technology, Economic History, Business History, Cultural Anthropology, Gender Studies, Japanese Modern Literature, Chinese Literature, Communications Studies, Applied Linguistics, Japanese Language Education, Archeology, Biological Anthropology, Japanese History, Japanese Studies, and Asian Regional Studies.

Research HighlightsThis graduate school encourages interdisciplinary education and researches. It also carries out distinctive research in various fields. Here are some of the highlights of these research projects.

In the graduate school, we use multibeam echo-sounder to create maps of coastal seafloor where no high-resolution maps have been available. In a series of studies, we succeeded in surveying and visualizing a historically important World War II naval battle site off Okinawa Island, Japan using innovative methods. While countless witnesses have provided vivid accounts of their WWII experiences, documentation of the war through material evidence is increasing in significance. The results of this research will provide an important message for peace education to the world.

Collecting and analyzing large amounts of linguistic data provides useful insights for linguistics. Integrated Sciences and Global Studies (ISGS) aims to accumulate linguistic data of various genres and conduct interdisciplinary research using the data provided.

3 Using Big Data in Linguistics Research

Heavy rain and flood disaster-affected area in northern Kyushu. Disaster prevention is not only a river-water management issue, but it also relates to various points of nature and society such as forest management and the setting of evacuation routes.

Floodwater reaching rural areas in Namibia. Moderate flood volumes provide some benefits for local residents. (Right photo) Aerial photo taken by UAV (drone) to calculate flooded area.

Water is an essential resource for humans and life in general; it is also used in various areas of society such as culture, livelihood, economy, and social organization. Moreover, pursuing ways to use and manage water is an important issue faced globally and locally in the context of climate and socioeconomic changes. Our Graduate School has engaged in a project to examine the various issues related to water from an interdisciplinary perspective.

2 Integrated Interdisciplinary Water Environment Research

Infectious diseases such as dengue fever, Ebola, SARS, and the current corona-virus continue to spread and cause panic in the modern age of science and medicine. In this research, I focus on a very important issue: how to control infectious diseases based on a historical perspective.

A record of the site was made using an innovative method incorporating precise control points obtained from multibeam bathymetry to generate considerably high-resolution seafloor map with a grid size of 5cm (below) and 3D models over a wide area of 120m × 30m using structure-from-motion photogrammetry while satellite positioning technology cannot be directly used in the water.
