Corporate history:-

Advanced Micro Devices was founded on May 1, 1969, by agroup of former executives from Fairchild Semiconductor.

During this time, AMD attempted to embrace the perceivedshift towards RISC with their own AMD 29K processor, andthey attempted to diversify into graphics and audio devices aswell as EPROM memory.

AMD announced a merger with ATI Technologies on July 24,2006. AMD paid $4.3 billion in cash and 58 million shares of itsstock for a total of US$5.4 billion. The merger completed onOctober 25, 2006 and ATI is now part of AMD.

AMD chipsets:-

Before the launch of Athlon 64 processors in 2003, AMDdesigned chipsets for their processors spanning the K6 and K7processor generations.

The chipsets include the AMD-640, AMD-751 and the AMD-761 chipsets. The situation changed in 2003 with the release ofAthlon 64 processors.

On November 15, 2007, AMD has announced a new chipsetseries portfolio, the AMD 7-Series chipsets, covering fromenthusiast multi-graphics segment to value IGP segment, toreplace the AMD 480/570/580 chipsets and AMD 690 serieschipsets

AMD takes processor market share from Intel, IDC says:-

1. Advanced Micro Devices gained share inworldwide processor shipments at the expenseof rival Intel during the fourth quarter of 2009,IDC said in a study released on Tuesday.

2. AMD gaining market share in the desktop andlaptop processor space, IDC said.

3. AMD's market share was 19.4 percent duringthe fourth quarter, increasing from 17.7 percent

the previous year.4. Intel recently refreshed its line of laptop and

desktop processors, launching new power-efficient chips that integrate the graphics

processor and CPU inside a single package.

AMD's laptop-processor market share grew to 12.7

percentin the fourth quarter compared to the 10.2 percent it

held the previous year . Intel's laptop processor share

dropped to 87.3 percent compared to 89.1 percent theprevious year.

AMD also recorded gains in the desktop processor market,

with its market share up to 28.6 percent from 26 percent

last year. Intel's market share dropped to 71.1 percent fromthe 73.9 percent share it had a year ago
