Heroes and Villains – the creation of Australian Identity Unit Title Heroes and Villains – the Creation of Australian Identity Unit Summary Students will develop an understanding of the creation of Australian identity between 1788 and 1901 through the study of: Early European Settlers (First Fleet and Convicts); the Australian Gold Rush (1850’s-1880’s); Bush Rangers (especially Ned Kelly) and the Federation of Australia (1880-1901). The Intel Visual Ranking Tool is used by students to think about and discuss the important steps that must be taken when forming a new nation (i.e. students rank in importance institutions such as constitution, defence force, system of government, etc.). The Intel Seeing Reason Tool is utilized when students are developing their understanding of Ned Kelly and determining in their own mind whether they believe that he was either a hero or a villain. The Intel Showing Evidence Tool is used by students when developing an essay answering the question “Was Ned Kelly a hero or a villain?” by allowing them to link evidence to their own hypothesis and develop their argument visually before presenting it in written from. Teaching and Learning Taxonomy – focusing on Higher-Order Thinking Skills This unit utilizes Blooms Taxonomy of Thinking Skills to assist students in developing an understanding of the issue under discussion. Students build on past knowledge and skills in order to enhance their grasp of identity in Australia. The unit also recognizes that students can often possess multiple learning intelligences, and therefore allows for each of Garner’s Multiple Intelligences to be incorporated into the teaching program (either during the presentation of the unit, or else in the development of summative assessment pieces by students). Accommodations for Diverse Needs Students with Special Needs:

I would provide differentiated assessment, extended work time, guiding templates, support structures, and personnel.

Students’ Prior Knowledge – This unit has been developed for students living in a regional farming community in South Australia. The learning styles of students include all of Garner’s Multiple Intelligences. Students have already completed a unit on local history including the history of Copper in South Australia, and therefore hold an understanding of the influence that mining communities had in the creation of Australian identity. Prerequisite Skills – Before beginning this unit, students need to have an understanding of the term ‘nation’ and how this relates to a feeling of unity and identity. Students need to be aware that Australia was settled by Europeans during the late 18th century, and that before the Federation of Australia the nation was under the rule of Britain. In order to complete this unit, students need to be aware of how to use the internet and a word processing program such as Microsoft Word.Learning Environment – The learning environment is a classroom with rows of desks facing the front of the class. Information is presented either through notes being placed on the board, booklets created by teacher, PowerPoint, DVD or Internet. Students work individually on the majority of tasks, however some collaboration is encouraged.
