Intelligent Transportation Systems and Goods Movement When we think about the two areas of Intelligent Transportation Systems and Intelligent Vehi-cles our first thoughts are typically focused around the multitude of cars that traverse our road-way networks getting people to where they need to go But we shouldnrsquot forget about another very important area of transportation goods movement and they many different transportation modes that are typically involved In recent years there have been a number of papers showing that per capita Vehicle Kilometers Traveled (VKT) for light duty vehicles is flattening out and perhaps has peaked Freight transportation on the other hand continues to increase following the general trend of the worldrsquos economy When we apply ITS techniques and automation to freight transportation we are generally fo-cused on the primary topics of safety system efficiency and energyemissionsmdashjust as we are with passenger travel Freight transportation can benefit from a number of ITS applications that have been developed for light-duty vehicles but there are a number of additional issues that are unique to the freight world In terms of safety heavy-duty trucks have wide range of perfor-mance capabilities depending on vehicle weight length of vehicle and other factors resulting in a number of additional safety concerns when operating in mixed traffic Specific safety applica-tions include blind spot and lane change warning forward collision warning electronic emer-gence brake lights and intersection movement assist to name a few It is important to note that in the US standardized ldquobasic safety messagesrdquo are being deployed first in light-duty vehicles soon to be followed by specialized safety messaging for heavy-duty vehicles In terms of goods movement efficiency there are a number of different transportation modes that can benefit from ITS and automation spanning the entire supply chain from the manufac-turers to consumers Key example applications include product tracking and RFID fleet man-agement logistics management and just-in-time delivery techniques On the topic of energy and the environment there are again a number of important performance factors such as vehicle weight driver behavior road network topography route optimization and traffic control strate-gies We are seeing a number of pilot studies now that are deploying innovative truck-based applications such as real-time delivery space booking truck smart parking eco-driver feedback systems and eco-routing systems all developed specifically for minimizing the energy and emissions impacts from trucks Going beyond just trucks logistics companies in general are developing new techniques to manage their transportation assets in an efficient manner and with

high levels of service quality So as we accelerate our research in connected vehicle and automated vehicles we should not just focus on passenger travelmdashthere is an equal or even potentially larger need to apply our research towards goods movement As the worldrsquos economy continues to grow this will be-come an increasingly important ITS topic area Matt Barth IEEE ITSS President 2014-2015
