Speaking Out.By Amalina RahmatTHE EGYPTIAN REVOLUTION

I have always known that whenever I laugh in the comfort of my own home, feeling safe and satiated to the point where I even complain about mundane things like not being able to buy Bruno Mars tickets or losing a follower on twitter or going “why must

I do all the dishes?”. As I agonize over the simplest things you can think of, there is someone out there who isn’t fortunate enough to even have a computer to create a twitter account to gain followers in the first place.

We are going through a revolution of democracy where everyone in the world is searching for peace in their own countries. We can’t just go “I don’t see it, therefore it does not exist.” But this doesn’t really work like that since all of us have belief in God

right? We can’t see Him, hear Him or have any physical contact with Him to confirm his existence but we still believe Him and know of His existence. Right now I feel like the world is in a conundrum. Everywhere in the world riots are happening, people are dying, cities are in chaos. It might not all be on the news, magazines or radio but it’s happening. We can ignore it when we

don’t know what’s going on. But how do we ignore something that is right in front of our face?

I was deeply inspired by the Egyptian Revolution especially since it started off by the Egyptian youths themselves. I was pretty lucky as I had the opportunity to interview an insider who could fill me in with what had happened in Egypt in his point of view

as a youth himself. So here it is,

The Egyptian Revolution (an insiders perspective)

Alhassan Ali Omar is a friend of mine from Egypt. He is 17 years old this year, and was nice enough to lend me his time to answer questions I had bombarded him with.

1) What led the youths to revolt? Was it inspired by the uprise in Tunisia?

Well, the Egyptians from a long time have been angry about the situation in Egypt, bad education, poverty, corruption from the president and the ministers who were stealing money and making benefits for themselves. We have been angry for a long time, but to be honest the people were afraid that if they  made a revolution it won't succeed, but seeing Tunisia succeeding it was like a trigger for us - it inspired us

and made us sure that if they had made a successful revolution, we also can do the same.

2) How did it start off with?

After the Tunisian revolt, everybody was inspired. So a lot of the groups on facebook started encouraging us to make a revolution, and they settled on the date 25th of January, and they chose on the Tahrir (liberation square) to be the place to start the revolution.

3) Who led it?

The best thing about this revolt is that no one led it, I have never seen a revolt with no leader, the only thing that led us is our will to make a change and to make Egypt a better country.

4) How did Egypt manage to do it so peacefully?

We went on the streets because we wanted to make a change, and to develop Egypt, and not to ruin it. It was quite surprising to see Christians and Muslims put aside their differences for the sake of the country.

The Christians guarding the Muslims during Friday Prayers.

5) So, what’s happening now?

Egypt is kind of unstable now, it's not secure, because ever since the revolt started the police stopped working, so that was a good opportunity for the thugs to do what they want. Although there are lots of cases going on now, it’s nothing major. We’re doing a referendum on changing the law soon because it gave the presidents a lot of rights that he shouldn’t have. So right now, we’re on our own. Pray for us,

please!

I hope that every country in the world would take the Egyptian Revolution as an example that, changes don’t necessarily have to be in a violent manner. Most of all we can learn from the Egyptian Revolution that when enough people believe, the impossible

can become possible.

After four long years of disappearing, these boys have finally come out with a new album, Danger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys. After the release of The Black Parade, you might think that My Chemical Romance is going to sit back and write a sequel to the album that dealt with life and death in such an emotional way. But thankfully, they have written an album that not only surpasses the punk-pop genres, but an album full of killer riffs, choruses and energy. It should come as no surprise My Chemical Romance front man, Gerard Way, has spent the past three years working on his graphic novel series The Umbrella Academy becauseDanger Days: The True Lives of the Fabulous Killjoys is literally the sonic equivalent of the graphic novel. The album's concept revolves around the lives of the "Fabulous Killjoys" -Party Poison (Gerard Way), Fun Ghoul (Frank Iero), Kobra Kid (Mikey Way) and Jet Star (Ray Toro) - who battle against an evil corporation in the year 2019.Their first single of the fourth album, Na Na Na, which I'm sure you have heard playing countless times on the radio, is a boisterously catchy tune and is much less annoying than one assumes a song with that title might be.This song doesn’t sound like what you picture when you think of My Chemical Romance, and to be honest, that’s not such a bad thing. According to front man Gerard Way, during the recording of Na Na Na, that was the moment they said, 'This song changes everything. We're starting over right now. We're starting it over with producer, Rob Cavallo, and we're doing it now'.

After a song like "Na Na Na", with its fast-paced, catchy pop anthem, comes "Sing" with its much needed peaceful tempo. This song starts off synthy, and just a little bit funky.'Sing' then erupts as waves of bass cascade around Gerard as he starts to sing. Definitely one of my favourite songs from the album, where MCR makes it clear why they conquer the pop-rock genre.

MTV World Stage is back yet again, this time with a new venue. In line with its last two editions here the event will once again be an outdoor concert featuring live performances by  popular international, regional and local artists. The first confirmed international act is none other than US rock band Thirty Seconds to Mars, while Pop Shuvit is just one of the big local names set to take the stage that night. Don’t miss your chance to see the ever-sexy Jared Leto!

Daniel Barnz directs this modern twist on the 'Beauty and the Beast' tale starring Alex Pettyfer and Vanessa Hudgens, along with Mary-Kate Olsen, Neil Patrick Harris and Peter Krause. Certainly better than the word "passable" might imply, "Beastly" is a sly and pleasant-enough young-adult programmer that is more likeable than not.Adapted and directed by Daniel Barnz, who previously made the Sundance title "Phoebe in Wonderland," the film centers on a brash, arrogant high school pretty boy (Alex Pettyfer) whose internal ugliness becomes externalized when he runs afoul of a spell-casting girl dabbling in witchcraft. She gives him one year to find someone to love him or he will remain in this altered state forever. His best shot turns out to be a shy loner (Vanessa Hudgens) to whom he had previously paid little attention.Based on the novel by Alex Flinn, "Beastly" is of course a modern telling of the classic "Beauty and the Beast" tale. Yet Barnz actually does make the film modern, subtly capturing the ways we now communicate, where deleting a text message can have an odd finality, and offhanded social media updates can, depending on As well, the casting of the film has a dry, subtle wit, with Mary-Kate Olsen as the witchy girl with ever-changing hair and high-fashion heels, Neil Patrick Harris as a sassy blind tutor and even Peter Krause as the boy's father, a vain, distant newscaster who tells his son by way of life advice, "People like people who look good."Let's leave aside that even if a girl who looked like Vanessa Hudgens were a bashful, bookish outcast, she'd still be beset upon by hip nerds looking to impress her with poetry they learned from Google before the Beast comes along. Hudgens has an imminently watchable screen presence, somehow engaging, but reluctantly so; she manages to be emotive and slightly wooden at the same time. The film, with its contemporary twist on gothic themes, seems designed to appeal to the "Twilight" crowd, except that they have proven a most fickle group to reach. In her own way, Hudgens is at the same career impasse as the "Twilight" kids as she gamely struggles to move beyond being that girl from "High School Musical." It is a genuine compliment to her that at no point in "Beastly" does she seem about to burst into either song or dance. The idea of transformation, that people can change and learn from their mistakes, growing to be better, makes "Beastly" not just sweetly romantic but also quietly hopeful.

MOVIE REVIEW: BEASTLY

In “Teenage Dream,” Katy Perry’s follow-up to her successful 2008 debut, One of The Boys, the songs alternate between weekend-bender celebrations of hedonism and melodramatic power ballads that encourage listeners to get an emotional makeover. To be honest, I am in love with this album. There’s even a Kaskade remix of "Teenage Dream" and Passion Pit's remix of "California Gurls" need I say more?!

Her first single, California Gurls, was the radio jam of the year. To avoid Katy's "California Gurls" was to live under a rock buried underneath a pile of bigger rocks. A mega hit so overplayed; it made Bieber’s “Baby” and Gaga’s “Bad Romance” jealous. (Don’t get me wrong, both songs are super catchy and absolutely brilliant). This song features an addictive chorus as well as a fitting guest rap from Snoop Dogg! According to Katy, the song is an answer song to Jay-Z and Alicia Keys’ “Empire State of Mind”. She stated that “It's so great that 'Empire State of Mind" is huge and that everybody has the New York song, but what the hell? What about LA? What about California? And it's been a minute since we've had a California song and especially from a girl's perspective.” So fine. So fresh. So fierce.

Her next single, Teenage Dream, Katy returns to her rock-pop roots. She sounds more at home with the guitars and thumping drums than she did with the electropop sound of 'California Gurls’. A brilliant example of Katy's song-writing skills, in this song she sings about how a man makes her feel like a teenager again - and the best part is that this song illustrates a typical teenage life, about being young and free.

Katy’s third single, “Firework" is a song with a catchy melody and danceable beat and shows the more “serious” side of her. The electronic beat makes this easily one of Katy's best songs, a song with a sing-along chorus, slightly detached in places. The positives out-weigh the negatives with its confidence-boosting lyrics. No doubt that “Firework” is her strongest song, vocally, she’s ever done with vocals that build to a chorus that will have people jumping and singing along.

My favourite song off “Teenage Dream” would have to be Pearl. In this song, Katy writes about a person in a bad relationship, who is living under fear; about a woman who used to light up the world but now she’s trapped in darkness - that is a man who has taken all her confidence and strength. She sings that she used to be a “shell”, and that "he" took away her light, afraid of what she could become. She leaves us with a beautiful inspiring verse; "You don't have to be a shell, you're the one who rules your world. You are strong and you'll learn that you can still go on. And you'll always be a pearl." The bass synth line in this song is simply gorgeous, making my heart skip a beat, and the message of the song is equally as beautiful. Katy ends the song with a single line, "She is unstoppable", leaving you with that lump hard in your throat as you try to hold back the tears.

KATY’S TEENAGE DREAM

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush six 9-inch-round cake pans (or as many 9-inch cake pans as you have, you can reuse them don’t worry) with shortening. Line bottom of each cake pan with parchment paper; brush again and set aside.

2. In a large bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder and salt and then set it aside. In another bowl, using an electric mixer helps, cream together butter and sugar. Slowly add egg whites and mix until well combined. Add vanilla and mix until it’s fully mixed. Add flour mixture and milk alternately, beginning with the flour and ending with the milk. Mix until well combined.

3. Divide batter evenly between six medium bowls. Add enough of each color of food coloring to each bowl, whisking, until desired shade is reached. Transfer each color to an individual cake pan. Put it into the oven and bake for 15 minutes OR until a cake tester inserted into the center of each cake comes out clean.

4. Remove cakes from oven and transfer to a wire rack; let it cool for 10 minutes. Invert cakes onto a wire rack; re-invert and let it cool completely.

5. Using a serrated knife, trim tops of cakes to make level. Place four strips of parchment paper around the perimeter of a serving plate. Place the purple layer on the cake plate. Spread 1 cup of buttercream filling over the first layer with a small offset spatula so it extends just beyond edges. Repeat process with blue, green, yellow, and orange layers.

6. Place the remaining red layer on top, bottom-side up. Gently sweep away any loose crumbs with a pastry brush. Using an offset spatula, cover the top and sides with a thin layer of frosting. Refrigerate for about 30 minutes.

7. Using an offset spatula, cover cake again with remaining frosting.

Buttercream two pages ahead!

1. Pulse confectioners' sugar and almond flour in a food processor until combined. Sift mixture 2 times.

2. Preheat oven to 375 degrees. Whisk whites with a mixer on medium speed until foamy. Add cream of tartar, and whisk until soft peaks form. Reduce speed to low, then add superfine sugar. Increase speed to high, and whisk until stiff peaks form, about 8 minutes. Sift flour mixture over whites, and fold until mixture is smooth and shiny.

3. Transfer batter to a pastry bag fitted with a 1/2-inch plain round tip, and pipe 3/4-inch rounds 1 inch apart on parchment-lined baking sheets, dragging pastry tip to the side of rounds rather than forming peaks. Tap bottom of each sheet on work surface to release trapped air. Let stand at room temperature for 15 minutes. Reduce oven temperature to 325 degrees. Bake 1 sheet at a time, rotating halfway through, until macaroons are crisp and firm, about 10 minutes. After each batch, increase oven temperature to 375 degrees, heat for 5 minutes, then reduce to 325 degrees.

4. Let macaroons cool on sheets for 2 to 3 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack. (If macaroons stick, spray water underneath parchment on hot sheet. The steam will help release macaroons.)

5. Sandwich 2 same-size macaroons with 1 teaspoon jam. Serve immediately, or

stack between layers of parchment, wrap in plastic, and freeze for up to 3 months.
