This is not an easy topic to discuss. But then again,

conversations about difficult situations seldom are. That’s

exactly why we need to talk… to each other. I’m referring to the

tragic death of George Floyd in Minnesota and the aftermath of

protests and in some cases, violence against one another.

Let me begin by saying, when I watched the video of that

incident, I was shocked, saddened, and angry over what I saw.

I’ll admit I don’t have all the details of what happened, but what I

do know is that the images I saw should have no place in law

enforcement. The officers involved deserve to be prosecuted for

their actions and in some cases, their lack of action. I know all of

the city’s Police Chiefs, law enforcement executives and law

enforcement personnel that I have spoken with feel the same

way. There is simply no reason a man had to lose his life

because of the actions of another.

We cannot ignore racism and we cannot tolerate it as a

community. We must denounce it and do everything we can to

prevent it. I have served 37 years in this county in law

enforcement and as a peacekeeper. I have always stood

against racism and discrimination and always will. Your local law enforcement is committed to

unifying our community through dialogue and solutions and not divide over hate and anger.

I wholeheartedly support the community’s right to exercise their first amendment rights to protest

and express themselves in a non-violent and non-destructive manner. So far, we have had several

gatherings throughout the county. Most have been peaceful. Others have tested the limits of what

a peaceful congregation can and should do. We have seen how some protests in other parts of the

country have become violent. And in doing so, the message of injustice and systemic racism has

been overshadowed or in many cases lost completely in the ensuing chaos. It’s not who we are.

It’s not who we should be.

My expectation is that the protests in our county will remain peaceful. But let me be clear, I will not

stand idly by and allow people to damage property or hurt people. Our role is to keep the peace by

protecting all people and property and that is what we will do. During these protests, our Deputies

have seen both extremes, from verbal assaults hurled at us to those thanking us for keeping the

peace. We understand. That’s what democracy is all about. The freedom to speak your mind.

I heard one of the speakers at the NAACP rally state that we should do more, and I agree. I have

begun to plan, work and learn from the people around me both at work and in the community to

help heal and help unite people locally. We have been living in a world of constant criticism on

many fronts. It is time to stop blaming and accusing and start working toward real solutions. This is

who we are. This is who we should be.

Page 3: Interactive Digital Magazine · begun to plan, work and learn from the people around me both at work and in the community to help heal and help unite people locally. We have been

Posted on Facebook by Deputy Nicholas Dreyfus prior to being shot and critically injured during the Paso Robles Active Shooter incident.

To all those people, know this. You can hate us, slander us, and think we are terrible people

because of what we do for work, but when you call us for help, we will be there.

In your most tragic days, we will be there to help pull you through.

When someone is trying to break into your house, we will be there.

When your lives are in danger, we will intercept that danger and protect you.

When your family member is suicidal, we will be there to intervene.

We will willingly run into a school toward the gunfire to save your children from active

shooters.

We will lay down our lives in your defense and in defense of the people you love.

We will do these things with little to no hesitation. Remember that.

If you’ve read this far through this message, thank you for taking the time to read it.

Hopefully it offered some perspective.

Don’t support the spread of hate, no matter who it’s directed at or where it comes from.

Feel free to share this with anyone you think needs to hear it.

Chuck Houck

San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation

Chairman of The Board

Speaking for all of the Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation, we thank you Law

Enforcement for doing a job most of us are not capable or willing to do. It

takes a strong and brave person to deal with the challenges you face on a

daily basis. We appreciate the burden of having to make quick decisions

in life saving or deadly situations with no guarantee you made the right

one. We trust you because of your commitment, training and experience

to help you handle the pressure of making the best decision in those

moments. Few people can knowingly put their safety in danger over

others or make split decisions like all of you have recently demonstrated.

The Sherriff’s Advisory Foundation is now 260 members strong and

growing. We have a common goal, which is to support our Law

Enforcement in San Luis Obispo County. We welcome new members who

share our commitment.

This county is unique in the knowledge that our Law Enforcement Officers

and Deputies are our neighbors, attend the same gyms, shop in the same

stores, attend the same places of worship, hike the same trails, pay the

same taxes, surf the same waves and their kids go to school with ours.

They are our friends and family. They live here among us shoulder to

shoulder as part of our very diverse community. We all share our

experiences together in this wonderful county of ours. 8

Sue has been working with photography for over thirty five years where she lives in Arroyo

Grande. She started her photography business, Blue Moon Photography, in 1997 and

worked with a partner for 7 years. She continued the business for another 7 years still

photographing weddings, portraits, events and commercial photography. She has a degree

from Gonzaga University in Sociology. She has always had a great love of art and

photography and has sold many pieces of work throughout the country. Prior to Blue Moon

Photography, Sue and a friend started a greeting card business called Lens Lines. Their

cards were sold in gift shops throughout the coastal communities.

Sue is married to Joe Schimandle, Charter Treasurer of the Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation,

and immediate past Chairman. She and Joe have two adult sons, as well as their daughter-

in-law, two grandsons and a great grand baby. One of her proudest accomplishments is

having raised, along with Joe, two sons who are good caring individuals and citizens.

She has worked in advertising and done historic photographic research in her position. She

worked for Joe in his CPA firm over many years. She has been a long time volunteer in the

community and has served on boards as well as numerous fundraising committees.

Sue has always been a strong supporter of law enforcement and has continued to show her

support by joining the Sheriff’s Advisory Foundation. She believes that in volunteering we

can share talents with many who are in need of support. Volunteers are the backbone of

many organizations that need the additional help, but do not have the funds for paid

positions. As a volunteer, she can promote the organizations that share her values.

Welcome our new SAF Director Sue Schimandle
