Introduction to Interactive Scotland

Introduction

Funded by Scottish Enterprise and delivered by PA Consulting

Group, Interactive Scotland (IS) provides expert help and

support for small to medium enterprises (SMEs) across the

digital community in Scotland. IS works with over 600 clients

with specialisms in a number of areas – including gaming,

publishing and digital design – to provide market intelligence

and business support.

In addition to providing industry insight through Thought

Leadership and business advice, IS helps connect the digital

community with:

• Potential sources of funding and investment

• New partners and collaborators

• Buyers of digital media

IS does this through its understanding of its client base and its

knowledge of the market. In the recent past, IS has helped their

clients access close to £4 million in additional revenue.

Essentially, IS helps connect capability with opportunity.

• New partners and collaborators: to help identify

compelling synergies between organisations and product

lines

• Buyers of digital media: to show potential customers what

digital media companies can do and how this might help

address their strategic objectives

It will describe the core competences of the sector and

specialisms and will provide case examples and company

Interactive Scotland’s client base

Overview

From gaming to BAFTA award-winning film and video

production, the Interactive Scotland (IS) client base

has gained global recognition in delivering leading-

edge digital media products and services.

With over 600 companies employing 8,000 plus digital experts generating revenues in the region of £0.5BN, the IS client base works with a number of public, private and third sector clients with government (helping make more public services available online) and food and drink (working with clients on customer experience and digital brand) considered key growth markets.

Although Scotland has a strong reputation in the gaming sector, Interactive Scotland clients work across a number of sub-sectors. Those are Gaming; Publishing; Animation; Music; Advertising & Marketing; Film & Video; Broadcast; Digital Technology; Digital Design; and Software & New Media.

The proliferation of mobile devices (smartphones and tablet computers) is stimulating the development of new apps and innovation in the use of digital technologies – particularly in consumer-led industries. Alongside government and food and drink, rapid growth is expected in financial services and retail.

Since there is a strong financial services sector in Scotland, this is expected to present opportunities for the development of new applications and services. Organisations with skills in gaming, software & new media, animation and digital technologies are expected to benefit.

Depending on the sector, Interactive Scotland clients cluster around three main cities: Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee. Broadcast and film clients can generally be found in Glasgow. The majority of gaming companies are based in Dundee. And marketing and advertising companies gather in Edinburgh.

Helped by Scotland’s universities, producing high-calibre graduates and delivering the latest thinking, IS advertising and marketing companies have built a strong reputation for creativity supported by a cluster of creative design and video production firms. IS’s film and video clients have key strengths in CGI alongside pre- and post-production technologies. And their software and new media clients are well-renowned for their creativity and front-end solutions.

Page 10: Interactive Scotland Creative Sector Capability

Why Scotland?

Key components of the success of the client

base are its reputation, its ability to

collaborate and a heritage dating back to the

early 1970s.

Working from a low cost base, the Interactive

Scotland client base has a strong track

record in client delivery. They understand

how to respond to market demand, working

closely with buyers who look to SMEs to

provide the leading-edge expertise that they

require. It is this combination of low cost,

reputation for project delivery and leading-

edge expertise that limits customer churn,

builds their knowledge and because of their

partnership approach to client management,

they continue to develop market-led

solutions.

Inter-connected through geography, there is

a very strong eco-system of companies

collaborating. (You will note from figure 1

that our clients tend to cluster in Glasgow,

Edinburgh and Dundee).

Beartrap Games for example partnered with

Leith Agency to develop a game for Home

Energy Scotland – a government-backed

campaign to help people keep their homes

warm during winter. Universities engage

with the sector through KTPs (Knowledge

Transfer Partnerships) and all of their

computer science departments are

connected together through SICSA (Scottish

Informatics and Computer Science Alliance),

which allows expertise to be matched

between universities and companies.

As the technology market in Scotland shifted

from electronics in the 1970s to digital media

from early 2000s, so too did the key players,

easing the transition from electronics to

digital media. It follows therefore, that the

bulk of the angel investors came from

electronics, re-investing their earnings into

the digital media sector.

Why Scotland? Reputation, collaboration and evolution

Gaming sector overview

Scotland is a world leader in Gaming and Interactive

Software, ranked as a top European games developer

destination in an industry estimated to contribute

£61M to our economy.

Although tablet and smart phone use is expected to rise

significantly over the next 3-5 years, spurring growth in demand

for apps ad associated services, console gaming is expected to

overtake mobile gaming by 2017, fuelled by the arrival of new

consoles, such as the PS4 and Xbox One.

Interactive Scotland works with 30 gaming sector companies

who are well-placed to take advantage of the trends in UK and

global gaming. With a reported 200+ employees generating

reported revenues of over £10M, they have skills and expertise

in MMO, educational, social, mobile and console gaming in

addition to supporting the sector through audio services and

core game component optimisation.

Working with global brands including Guinness, VISA and

Honda as well as serving B2C markets, IS clients are evenly

distributed between Glasgow, Edinburgh and Dundee, close to

universities – West of Scotland; Caledonian; Napier; and

Abertay – each with first class computer gaming programmes.

This provides gaming companies with the skills and talent vital

to their industry.

Interactive Scotland clients are well-renowned for their

creativity, innovation and collaboration.

Lucky Frame (recently acquired by Blazin Griffin) an

Edinburgh-based iPhone app, desktop software and games

developer were recently awarded a BAFTA for their satirical

game, Bad Hotel. Beartrap Games partnered with Leith

Agency to develop a game for Home Energy Scotland – a

government-backed campaign to help people keep their homes

warm during winter. And Monster Legacy, a title developed

by Dundee-based Outplay Entertainment, featured as an

Editor’s Choice in Apple’s App Store in 49 countries. Outplay

also recently secured $5M funding from Oxford Capital.

many with BAFTA and Royal Television Society

awards – from the film and video production sector.

Their key skills are in distribution; factual content;

broadcast media training; design; digital media

production and copywriting.

Over the years there has been increased convergence in digital

these trends in the application of digital technologies in

production.

STV have decided to locate – on the city’s waterfront at Pacific

Publishing overview

There are few sectors to be impacted by digital media

as much as the publishing sector. The Internet has

disrupted the business of publishing ‒ books,

magazines and newspapers ‒ for the past decade or

more. The general principles remain however - so

authors, editors, distributors and publishers continue to

play a pivotal role. To this end, there are a host of

world-renowned publishers located in Scotland taking

advantage of the convergence of and the skills in both

digital and publishing.

There are 36 publishing companies in IS's client base with

over 150 employees generating revenues in excess of £8M.

Although principally targeting the B2C market, IS's publishing

companies deliver solutions to B2B clients including the BBC;

Penguin Books and Sony Records. And with skills in print and

content creation, Interactive Scotland's publishing clients

increasingly look to digital media to drive their content forward.

The 1.6M readers of award-winning publisher, The List can

access content through a website built in responsive design

providing a first-rate mobile experience. The Newspaper Club

has developed a software tool to allow users to generate their

own newspaper. And Clash Music is an independent media

group with established platforms in both print and digital media,

which has helped them win a host of awards.

Digital media will continue to play central role in publishing with

the increasing number of e-readers, e-books and tablets through

to the advent of Google Glass and wearable technologies and

the possibilities that will bring to the use of big data. There are

many possibilities.

Music sector overview

Although this one of the smaller Interactive Scotland client sectors, the 50+ employees working for the 26 music companies in IS's client base have worked with leading artists including, Glasvegas, Leona Lewis and Paul Weller as well as big brands such as PlayStation, Sky and the BBC.

With skills in Sound Post-Production; Digital Distribution; iTunes Video Distribution; SMS Purchasing; Sync Services; Video Games; Mobile Applications; and Promotion these music companies generate reported revenues of over £1M.

In addition to the diverse range of skills, there is a varied product offer made by these companies. EmuBands for example helps unsigned artists and independent record labels sell music online. They have distributed 20 top 75 UK singles, including 11 in the top 40 and 3 in the top 10. Savalas - with the UK’s first Dolby Premier mix theatre - has worked on the Halo games and on Brave, the animated feature by Disney Pixar. EmuBands have distributed 20 top 75 UK singles,

including 11 in the top 40 and 3 in the top 10, which

is more than Pink Floyd had in the UK.

Software and new media overview

Scotland's software and new media sector plays a key role in

the growth of the economy. Increasingly, global players

including Amazon, JPMorgan and Dell are locating in the

country to take advantage of the supply chain capabilities.

Interactive Scotland's software and new media accounts for

nearly one third of the client base. We have a range of niche

companies producing leading-edge solutions to global brands.

With nearly 3,000 employees generating revenues in excess

of £160M, our clients have provided solutions for SkyScanner,

the Edinburgh Fringe Festival and Nokia.

Our clients cater to a varied client base - from weather

applications to dating platforms - and have skills across a

number of disciplines including: mobile app design; user

experience; content marketing; inbound marketing; data

visualisation; market research; crowdsourcing; social media

integration; UX design; cloud-based services; hosted services;

and reports and analytics.

Although there are a number of clients providing services to the

B2C segment - such as 5pm.co.uk and Cupid.com (Easy

Date Holding Ltd), IS clients provide a range of services to

major enterprise clients.

Kotikan an Edinburgh-based app developer produced a mobile

application for SkyScanner, which has been downloaded

over 30M times, topped the free travel app category in over

100 countries, including the US, and now accounts for over half

of all Skyscanner flight searches. Weather 2, a Glasgow-based

provider of location based global weather information, provides

content feeds for Sky and data services to Microsoft. And

Award-Winning Firefish Software provides bespoke software

to recruitment companies including Denholm Associates and

Taylor Hopkinson.

Kotikan’s Skyscanner app has been downloaded 30M times – more

than double the UK’s top 10 downloaded songs of all time!

…with over 150M visitors, the app attracts more annual

visitors than France and the U.S.A. combined!

Twice as good as Pharrell, Adele and Rihanna…

…and it’s a top tourist attraction!

Advertising & Marketing overview

Just shortly after their IPO in 2012, Facebook saw a dip in

share price as markets got jittery about their ability to make the

most of mobile ad revenues. Today, their market capitalisation

is at an all-time-high, fuelled by mobile ad revenue and

profitability. The importance of digital marketing and

advertising will only increase with tablet and smart phone use

expected to rise significantly over the next 3-5 years. This is

compounded by ever-declining print advertising spend -

expected to reduce by around one fifth of current levels by

2017. By contrast, UK mobile ad spending, more than doubled

to over £1BN in 2013. Overall, digital ad spending is expected

to increase by 44% to £9BN in the next four years. Mobile ad

spending will have quadrupled in this time.

Interactive Scotland has 33 companies who get the digital

marketing and advertising space. With 200+ employees

generating revenues in the region of £10M, our clients have

keys skills in SEO; Strategy; Marketing; Brand Building; Digital

Presence; Innovations; Social Media; Digital Marketing;

Content and Design; PPC; and B2B Technology Marketing.

Our clients work across a range of sectors with clients including

Barclaycard; Emirates; and UEFA.

Glasgow-based Dog Digital’s social campaign for UEFA was

selected as one of the world's 40 best digital marketing

campaigns, chosen out of over 700 campaigns from brands

and agencies worldwide. As part of this, they developed a

microsite, which attracted over 10,000 daily visitors.

Edinburgh-based Nomads supported the re-launch of

Emirates "Hello Tomorrow" campaign.

Rapp delivered a digital campaign for Barclaycard, which

attracted 372,000 unique visitors – around the same as the

weekly attendance in the Barclays Premier League…They also

secured over 113,000 new customers – a conversion rate of

around 30%

Dog Digital built a microsite for UEFA, which attracted

10,000 users per day – more traffic than passes

through London City Airport!
