ISC – Bridge Design and Testing:In your Planner, Show The Research/documentation…
1. Learn to operate the ISC by testing an aluminum specimen for compression.
2. Show the physical remains of your can that you tested and discuss the strengths and weaknesses of their physical makeup.
3. Analyze test results from ISC testing and make predictions about which metal(s) and materials to use to build a bridge today, in your Word Document.

ISC - Stress Analyzer
This is the ISC Interactive Strength
Challenger

ISC – Getting Started
The ISC power switch is located on the front of the machine near the power cord.
Turn the power ON before launching the ISC control software.
![Page 7: Interactive Strength Challenger Part 2b: The ISC Machine- Tension](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56649de55503460f94addc51/html5/thumbnails/7.jpg)
ISC – Getting Started
The ISC will be controlled with the PC Control software…
It will not be controlled manually with this control box and keypad.
![Page 8: Interactive Strength Challenger Part 2b: The ISC Machine- Tension](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56649de55503460f94addc51/html5/thumbnails/8.jpg)
For Tension
Follow these guidelines:– Ask Mr. Ochs for Metal Specimens– Analyze each specimen– In your Word Document, predict which
specimen you think will be the strongest.– Test each specimen.
Be sure to take pictures of each specimen.– Record your results in your Word
Document.

Install the lower tensile
strength adaptor…
Install the upper tensile
strength adaptor…

In order to use metals in particular applications, it is sometimes necessary to know their tensile strength.
To avoid structural failure, the right metal must be used for the job. Testing various metals before you use them will help you discover which ones are strongest.
Insert the pins to secure your test specimens

Tensile Strength Test
on Brass
Now let’s measure the elasticity of several structural materials.
Example of materials may include: cold-rolled steel, stainless steel, aluminum and brass.

If you get this message…
Exit the ISC software, and start the software again and setup again.
![Page 22: Interactive Strength Challenger Part 2b: The ISC Machine- Tension](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56649de55503460f94addc51/html5/thumbnails/22.jpg)
You can see how much longer the
broken specimen is compared to the
original size.
It began to deform at point #2 and broke at
point #4.
Notice how much it
stretched
![Page 23: Interactive Strength Challenger Part 2b: The ISC Machine- Tension](https://reader035.vdocuments.net/reader035/viewer/2022062301/56649de55503460f94addc51/html5/thumbnails/23.jpg)
The modulus is the slope of the red line. The specimen
began to deform at point #2 and broke at point #4.
*Without the testing equipment of today, we would never realize the exact strength of some metals.
Below point #2 the test material is in an elastic state. If you stop the test the specimen will spring back to its original size and shape.
Above point #2 the test material is in a plastic state. It is permanently deformed and weakened.
