2. What is Music Therapy? Music therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program. 3. How is Music Therapy Used? Music is presented by a music therapist to assist or motivate a person toward specific non- musical goals. 4. Dementia Therapy and Music "Music that has personal significance to someone or is connected with historical events is a strong stimulus to engage responses in people, even in late stages of dementia. Even if they're not necessarily able to tell you what the song is, they are able to be moved and feel the associations." 5. Drury University Center for Music Therapy and Wellness 6. Drury University Center for Music Therapy and Wellness On campus music therapy clinic Consists of full-time board certified music therapists: client services and student supervision Students must complete a 6 month internship to receive a Bachelors degree in music therapy. They must also pass the national board certification exam. 7. Drury University Center for Music Therapy and Wellness Students are working toward clinical hours Accompanied by an MT-BC The center has a growing number of clients Clients Children with developmental disabilities and learning disabilities Geriatrics Hospice clients People with behavioral health needs Substance abuse clients 8. Two generations coming together for a common goal 11. Why is IGRB Important? Limited contact between younger and older generations Older adults are not living with family Social and emotional benefits Diffuse the misconceptions Facilitates meaningful interactions between two generations 12. Benefits for Young Adults Positive attitudes towards aging adults Improved listening skills Academic learning 13. Benefits for Older Increase self-esteem Increase quality of life Teach them unfamiliar music to keep their minds sharp and help build the generation gap 14. Photos from IGRB Rehearsal 19. This is my third year doing intergenerational rock band. My favorite part is the relationships that build over time. When we first start its always kind of awkward between the students and the seniors, and you can tell that they feel kind of uncomfortable, but by the end we all have our inside jokes.
