Welcome & Introduction

IDEAS FOR INTERIOR FOREST SECTOR RENEWAL

Thank you for being here today to support our Interior forest sector and contributing to B.C.’s thriving economy.

The Interior sector is facing challenges, as we all know. A shrinking supply of beetle-killed timber, record wildfire seasons,

U.S. lumber trade actions and declining lumber prices have all made business more difficult.

We need to take a different approach to address these challenges and secure and restore B.C.’s forestry jobs. That’s why

you’re here today. We need to hear your ideas and solutions.

I have asked industry, labour, First Nations and leaders in forest-dependent communities to come together and create a

framework that will keep the industry thriving and grow it into tomorrow.

It’s a locally-led, collaborative process to support communities and set our course for the future of forestry in the Interior.

This is our opportunity to build the future we all want:

• a competitive forest industry;

• opportunities for local workers;

• meaningful partnerships with First Nations; and

• security for forest-dependent communities.

I know you want to be a part of the solution.

I am confident that by working together we can chart a positive future for the forestry industry and the communities, workers

and families who rely on it.

Thank you for taking the time to help.

Operations and Rural Development
