Legal Conference: Oil and Gas / Knowledge Management
• The first week of my internship I attended the first annual Oil and Gas Legal Conference here in Houston
• We broke up into two separate groups:
– Contract Principals Group– Knowledge Management
Group
• First experience in the legal world • Great opportunity to meet and
network with people from all 3 companies
• Knowledge Management group was in charge of researching new platforms for information sharing and collaborating through the criteria of:
– Reducing costs– Execution and start up – Great security– Easy to use– The ability to search quickly
through the document – Disaster recovery

Assignment Execution
• Look for the statutes of limitations throughout the contract
• Find the Effective date
• Learn what the contract involved and the wording
• Look in the survival clause to see what articles will survive
• Identify the indemnity type of the contract
• Search contract and identify any use of statutes of limitations to limit risk through clauses such as:
• Warranty• Title• Indemnity• Survival• Limit of Liability
• Produce concise Excel spreadsheet noting how statutes were used in each clause

Assignment Execution:
• Review 180+ customers and contract status
• The title of the contract
• List any historical purchases
• Make notes of terms and conditions or orders placed
• Identify the buyer and seller
• Use MSA folders and legacy folders to find past and present clients
• Create and organize an excel spreadsheet with specific criteria
• Created a convenient reference list of our top domestic sales customers, noting whether or not a master contract exists

Lessons Learned and Knowledge Gained
• Ask questions, be interested in what you are selling or helping to protect
• Don’t be afraid to talk or speak up
• Be flexible
• “Sometime you just have to go with your gut”
• Look for exact wording instead of going with my gut
• Learn to use instincts • Patience • It is about the path to the
answer• You can never ask too many
questions, take interest• The only way to overcome a
fear is by confronting it

Suggestions to Improve Internship
• More involvement with the other departments
• Multiple and longer site visits• More team building exercises
It is important for us to know what other departments do
- It helps us meet their needs and vice versa
It would allow us to see more of the business and understand the departments and operations
With a greater time allotment, it would provide us with greater learning opportunities
