Global Environment Facility (GEF)

GEF is a funding mechanism of UNFCCC, CBD, UNCCD, Stockholm Convention

on PoPs and Minamata Convention on Mercury.

Focal areas: climate change mitigation and adaptation, biodiversity conservation,

land degradation, chemical & waste and international waters.

India is one of the founder members.

MoEFCC is the Operational Focal Point.

DEA is the Political Focal Point

Highlights of Ongoing Projects

Biodiversity Conservation and Rural Livelihood Improvement (Total project cost:

USD 31.02 m of which USD 8.14 m is GEF grant) aims to undertake economically viable conservation

activities outside PAs to reduce pressure on PA (Askote, Little Runn of Kutch, Satpura and

Agasthyamalai)

Coal Fired Generation Rehabilitation project (Total project cost: USD 181.56 m of which

USD 45. 4 m is GEF grant) aims to undertake EE R&M work in Unit-5 of Bandel TPS, Unit-6 of Koradi

TPS and capacity building of Central Electricity Authority.

EE Improvements in Brick Industry (Total project cost: USD 2.69 m of which USD 0.696 m is

GEF grant) promotion of resource-efficient bricks by including REB specifications in BIS standards and

procurement guidelines of CPWD/PWD, establishing 3 REB units, investment plans for 25 units and

knowledge management material.

Sustainable Urban Transport (Total project cost: USD 299.51 m of which USD 24.38 m is GEF

grant) aims to promote environment-friendly urban transport systems in Pimpri-Chinchwad, Naya

Raipur, Indore, Mysore and Hubli-Dharwad.

Improving EE in Indian Railways system (Total project cost: USD 26.2 m of which USD 5.2

m is GEF grant) aims to improve EE in Indian Railways in both traction and non-traction systems by

piloting technologies like optimal light control, smart sense, smart grid, provision of automated light and

fan control, retrofitting of LED lights, automation of pumping, provision of super EE fans, setting up of

EE benchmarks etc.

EE Improvements in Commercial Bldgs (Total project cost: USD 21.07 m of which USD 5.2

m is GEF grant) aims to reduce energy consumed by new commercial bldgs by integrating appropriate

design interventions. The project is supporting GoI’s initiative in making ECBC a mandatory regime by

end of 12th FYP.

Financing EE at SME (Total project cost: USD 63. 6 m of which USD 12. 43 m is GEF grant) aims

to facilitate EE related investments in MSME clusters by providing TA for preparation and

implementation of investment grade EE improvement measures, capacity building, technology support

and knowledge sharing in Foundry & Forging (Kolhapur), Forging (Pune), Limekilns (Tirunelveli),

Chemicals (Ankleshwar), Mixed industries (Faridabad).

Promoting EE and RE in MSMEs (Total project cost: USD 33.37 m of which USD 8 m is GEF

grant) aims to set up 29 demo units in 12 clusters – ceramic (Khurja, Thangarh, Morbi), brass

(Jamnagar), Diary (Gujarat), Hand-tools (Nagur and Jalandhar), Foundry (Indore, Coimbatore,

Belgaum). Energy Management Centers are set up in all 12 clusters

Mkt Development of Solar Industrial Process Heat Technologies (Total project cost:

USD 23.75 m of which USD 4.4 m is GEF grant) aims to accelerate installation of solar concentrator

technologies. About 45,000 sq m of CST based system installed in 90 establishments resulting in 3.15

m litres of fuel oil saved annually.

coast, Maharashtra (Total project cost: USD 15.43 m of which USD 3.438 m is GEF grant)

Capacity Bldg for Strengthening the Implementation of BD Act with focus on

ABS (Total project cost: USD 9. 839 m of which USD 3. 561 m is GEF grant)

Capacity Building on Biosafety for Implementation of the Cartagena Protocol (Total project cost: USD 8.727 m of which USD 2.727 m is GEF grant)

Environmentally Sound Mgmt and Final Disposal of PCBs in India (Total project

cost: USD 66.4 m of which USD 14.1 m is GEF grant) aims to reduce / eliminate use and release of

polychlorinated biphenyls (PCB) to environment and disposal of at least 7,700 tons of PCB-

contaminated equipment, oil and other waste. The treatment facility is set up at Bhilai Steel Plant.

Environmentally Sound Mgmt of Bio-medical waste in India (Total project cost: USD

44.44 m of which USD 10 m is GEF grant) in Gujarat, Karnataka, Maharashtra, Odisha and Punjab.

Climate Resilient Coastal Protection and Mgmt in India (Total project cost: USD 56.15

m of which USD 1.818 m is GEF grant) in Karnataka, Maharashtra aims to strengthen resilience of

coast, coastal infrastructure and communities to the adverse climate impacts by preparing adaptation

guidelines and effective mainstreaming of CC into coastal protection and mgmt.

integrated urban planning, global best practices and pilot demonstrations on waste to energy plants in

Mysore, Jaipur, Bhopal, Vijayawada and Guntur.

Creating and Sustaining EE markets (Total project cost: USD 434.2 m of which USD 20.8 m is GEF

grant) focusing on installing 400 m of LEDs in domestic lighting, 8 million in street lighting, promoting

super efficient fans [70 to 35 W], developing market protocols for market scale up of tri-generation of

electricity, hear and cooling.

Secure Himalayas (Total project cost: USD 55.3 m of which USD 12.7 m is GEF grant) focusing on

illegal wildlife trade and snow leopard conservation with community initiatives.

Grid Connected Rooftop Solar PV (Total project cost: USD 625 m of which USD 25 m is GEF grant)

focusing on enabling 800 MW of rooftop solar power to come up through aggregators without subsidy

and establishing a system of net metering in 3 pilot DISCOMs as pilots.

Climate Smart Agriculture (Total project cost: USD 494 m of which USD 36.887 m is GEF grant)

focuses to treat 800,000 hectares of biodiversity rich land to address the environmental challenges

posed by agriculture as the driver, adoption of climate-friendly agricultural practices and systems,

promote evidence-based agrarian policy/ legislations, organic certification, skill building and

institutionalization.
