Kath Oldale Chair of Governors

My name is Kath Oldale and I am the Chair of Governors for the International Food & Travel Studio. First of all, thank you for considering the International Food & Travel Studio. It is a unique learning experience for young people aged between 14 and 19.

The Studio is backed by the McMillan Education Trust which was developed by Bradford College to oversee a group of Academies and Studio Schools throughout West Yorkshire. The Trust also includes Appleton Academy, Samuel Lister Academy and will soon include two more Studio Schools specialising in Film, Theatre & Costume and Health Occupations opening in 2014.

All of us at the College have very high aspirations for the International Food & Travel Studio and we work very closely with the Executive Headteacher, Dwayne Saxton, to improve the learning outcomes for the young people of Bradford so that they all achieve their goals.

Dwayne Saxton Executive Headteacher

The International Food & Travel Studio provides an outstanding learning environment, bringing together employers and education, to ensure every one of our students has the greatest opportunity to succeed in life.

Our approach at the International Food & Travel Studio is to combine key academic and vocational qualifications with real work experience and employability skills in order to give each student the best possible chance of future success. We seek to better engage students in their learning and help them to understand how what happens at school relates to the wider world.

Why internatiOnal fOOD anD travel? There are many reasons to choose international food and travel, especially in Bradford due to its diversity of food and cultures. With Leeds/Bradford Airport next door and Bradford’s regeneration strategy to become a ‘City of Food’, the International Food & Travel Studio is ideally specialized for those wanting a career in the food and travel industry. In addition to this, employment opportunities in the industry are plentiful with 1 in 4 vacancies remaining unfilled.

whaT iS a STudiO SChOOl?The Studio School is an innovative concept in education, which seeks to address the growing gap between the skills and knowledge that young people require to succeed, and those that the current education system provides.

Studio Schools are designed for 14-19 year olds of all abilities. They are small schools for 300 students; and with year-round opening and a 9-5 working day, they feel more like a workplace than a school.

Studio Schools have 6 essential elements:

PrOject BaSeD learning

Project based learning lies at the heart of the Studio Schools’ curriculum model. We believe it is essential that all students understand why they are learning what they are being taught. Students will apply their learning to a variety of projects which may combine more than one subject. For example, students will create a dish themselves and then learn how to package, price and market that product for general sale.

This project combines both Food Technology, Maths and Business. Year 10 and 11 students study a vocational qualification at level 2 alongside core and optional GCSEs, whilst Year 12 and 13 students specialise in a vocational qualification at level 3 and possibly an ‘A’ level or two as well.

The International Food & Travel Studio offers a unique style of education based on personalised learning and the combination of vocational BTEC diplomas with academic GCSE and A Level subjects in a work related environment supported by local employers. The Studio believes in coaching, developing and supporting individual students to achieve maximum success in whatever a student wishes to do.

This is a fantastic opportunity for my son to focus his learning in a targeted way linked to his choice of career. The added bonus is the link to work placements which is a completely different approach to work experience in schools. My son is excelling being part of something unique in Bradford and I would recommend any parent to consider this as an option for their son or daughter. mohammed khan Father of Year 10 student

The Studio School offers students the chance to gain real work experience on a weekly basis throughout the school year. This is essential to the Studio’s vision of developing individuals with the experience and skills they need to enter the workplace. A significant portion of all students’ weekly time will be spent working in local businesses across the City and local area.

This goes far beyond the typical two week work experience offered by traditional schools and gives our students a first-hand insight into the working world resulting in work ready individuals for the UK and International job market.
