Toronto International Horn Day, March 30th: A GREAT SUCCESS

A full day of activities was held at the Lakeshore Campus at Humber College and there were over 250 participants. Many said they would

like Horn Day to be held at Humber in the future because of the great facilities and convenient location. Ron George, our Artistic Director

led the morning warm-up on stage, and Janet Anderson, Neil Spaulding and Joan Watson comprised the jury for the Mock

Audition and follow-up session. Congratulations to the mock audition winner of $250: Matt Berliner! The runner-up was Natalie

Worden. The $250 Horn Day Service Award was presented to Natalie Worden for her significant contributions to the planning and

success of our event. The winner of the IHD logo contest was Alex Willms. His logo is featured at the top of this newsletter.

Several of Gary Pattison’s arrangements were played both in the concert and the reading session with Melba Lui, which were challenging and fun! There were two Wagner Tuben for the “petting zoo” courtesy of University of Toronto, and COC members Scott Wevers and Bardhyl Gjevori shared their expertise with all who wanted to try out an instrument. The student ensemble as well as the Advanced Horn Ensemble were led by Joanna Grace. James MacDonald led the Jazz Horn Session, which was very well attended. The afternoon concert in the Lakeshore Auditorium involved the Advanced Horn Ensemble, professional groups, and university players from U of T, Laurier, Western, and the Glenn Gould School. We didn’t see as many community horn groups this year, but hope that people will organize themselves to be able to participate at the next event. Joan Watson received a plaque and a photo book at her Tribute presentation, and Gary Pattison and Ron George each received a gift of appreciation. Our grand finale was “Zadok the Priest” for 6 solo horns and massed ensemble. Thank you to the TSO horn section plus guests David Quackenbush and Erin Cooper-Gay for their fine solo playing.

Outside of the musical schedule, there was also a sponsor/vendor area. Peter Samuelson from Toronto and Daniel Twigg from Montreal displayed their horns and supplies, the Canadian Music Centre, Mississauga Symphony, GP Music Repair Services, Humber College, and Interprovincial Music Camp were on hand as well to network and support our event. Special thanks to Victor Szabo (videographer) and Greg Robinson (photographer) who helped capture the event. We will be putting together a short video of the event for the website this summer. The Silent Auction (coordinated by Elke Eble) was very popular and raised almost $700, which ultimately helped us to balance our budget. Thank you to everyone who participated in donating items and for bidding on them as well! The day was a success because of the contributions of many. We have a thriving community of horn players in southern Ontario.

We are looking into options for future events, and the possibility of holding an event in Toronto every other year, with various cities running their own events between the Toronto dates.

Joan Watson is Canada's foremost French horn soloist, principal horn, lecturer and educator. Joan is highly regarded as a consummate musician and skilled virtuoso. Her contribution across the country includes Principal Horn of the award winning Canadian Opera Orchestra, founding member of the prestigious True North Brass quintet, Associate Principal Horn for the Toronto Symphony Orchestra for 14 seasons, and Principal horn of the Esprit Orchestra, Victoria Symphony, Pacific Opera and Vancouver Opera orchestras.

Joan is frequently heard on CBC as a chamber musician and with New Music Concerts. As well you will hear her on numerous commercials, television shows and movie scores. "Songs My Mother Taught Me" is Joan's solo CD and is a wonderful collection of favourite soothing tunes. A member of the University of Toronto's faculty of music, Joan teaches horn and lectures

on Performance Skills, audition preparation, practice tips, and creating a passionate and fulfilling life of music making.

Brott Music Festival Thursday, June 19th – Thursday, August 14th Hamilton, Ontario

Now entering its 27th season, the Brott Music Festival (est. 1988) is the largest non-profit orchestral music festival in Canada, and, the only festival with a full-time, professional orchestra-in-residence.

The Brott Music Festival is renowned for its extremely high artistic standard, world class soloists, its exuberant young orchestra and its eclectic mix of orchestral, chamber, jazz, pops and education concerts at various venues across Southern Ontario.

National Youth Orchestra of Canada Sunday, July 20th – Sunday, August 10th Cross-Canada Tour

For more than fifty years, the National Youth Orchestra of Canada has enjoyed an iconic reputation as Canada’s orchestral finishing school, providing the most comprehensive and in-depth training program available to our country’s best young classical musicians. As the bridge between music education and a music career, NYOC trains well-rounded and skilled orchestral musicians who are able to thrive in a variety of performance environments.

Members of the NYOC horn section include: Carlie Bigelow, Peter Clark, Ryan Garbett, Emily Lair, Ali Nizamani, and Tina Shapero, and they will be coached by Gabe Radford of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

Youth Summer Camps! Moving Forward: International Horn

Day – November 3rd At the Toronto International

Horn Day follow up meeting, it was agreed to promote

November 3, St.Hubert’s Day (Patron Saint of the Hunt), as the day every year when horns can be heard in performance all around the world, with concerts big and small. We want to work

with the International Horn Society to make this happen, and collect information and

photos from groups who have participated as well. Do you

have a group that will set up a lunchtime concert or a flash

mob? Let us know!

On March 2nd, Ronald George, Principal horn of Orchestra London, performed Howard Cable’s piece “Point Pelee”. His performance captured

critical acclaim. One online reviewer writes: “Alain likes to bring this man to the fore (as did

Tim Vernon before him) with good reason. He's a great player. A

few minutes of his work shows what sublime beauty his

instrument is capable of.”

Solo Spotlight:

Interprovincial Music Camp Saturday, August 23rd – Sunday, August 31st Camp Manitou-Wabing, Parry Sound

Interprovincial Music Camp (IMC) is a residential summer music camp that offers young musicians the unique opportunity to participate in orchestral, band, jazz, rock, musical theater, and songwriting programs while enjoying the wonderful setting of one of Canada's finest summer camp facilities. Founded in 1961 by Ben and Sheila Wise, IMC is a Non-Profit, Non-Sectarian Charitable Foundation serving young musicians ages 10 through 18. Horn players attending the camp will be coached by Ronald George of Orchestra London.

National Music Camp Junior Camp: August 16th- 22nd Senior Camp: August 23rd – 31st Camp Wahanowin, Orillia

National Music Camp (NMC) provides an extraordinary music and camp experience for young musicians aged 9-18 from beginners to advanced, and we've been doing it for 50 years. Campers have the time of their lives, making lifelong friends and learning in a challenging, supportive, family-like environment. Many campers now start their NMC life at age 9 or 10 and continue through the end of high school, at which point they get in line to be accepted on staff. Horn players attending the camp will be coached by Janet Anderson of the Canadian Opera Company Orchestra.
