Edmonton International Airport (EIA) is the fifth busiest airport in Canada by passenger traffic. EIA provides non-stop connections to 60 Canadian, US and international destinations, including major international air hubs such as Amsterdam-Schiphol, London-Heathrow, LAX, Dallas/Fort Worth and San Francisco. EIA is North America’s northernmost major airport, located at the intersection of existing polar air routes. It is also the fastest-growing major airport in Canada over the last 10 years, having nearly doubled in passenger numbers since 2004.

The airport’s proximity to the Leduc-Nisku Business Park (the largest energy-focused industrial park in Canada) positively influences growth in and around the airport. A 25 per cent cargo volume increase over the last five years can be attributed in part to rapid development and expansion of various facilities on site.

One of only two Canadian airports designated as an emerging aerotropolis, EIA’s focus on cargo and commercial development has had enormous impacts on its operations and the region’s prosperity. Revenue generated from these sources gets re-invested into further developments at the airport, creating a virtuous cycle business model. Over $500 million in private investment has been committed already, and phase 1 of aerotropolis development is slated for completion in Q4 2017.

Phase 1 includes Ivanhoé Cambridge‘s Outlet Collection at EIA, featuring 415,000 square feet of retail outlets offering value from over 100 renowned brands. In addition, EIA is developing a 210,000-square-foot ground transportation facility with the intention of expanding it far beyond that size.

Recently, EIA also announced a Boeing 737-Classic simulator in partnership with Canadian North, operational in 2015, and an AS350 Level 7 Flight Training Device helicopter simulator in partnership with Canadian Helicopters, operational in 2015 as well. With these two projects, the Edmonton region will be firmly established as a flight simulation hub, and draw international interest.
