CREAT I VE AND V IBRANTThe University of Sussex is just nine minutes by train from Brighton, one of the UK’s most vibrant cities. The city is famous for its beautiful seafront, unique shops and markets, and thriving music and art scenes. Each year, millions of inquisitive tourists and open-minded individuals visit this inspirational city to experience its friendly and creative atmosphere.

SEAS IDE ESCAPEBrighton’s pebble beach is perfect for meeting up with friends for fish and chips, or simply enjoying fresh air and sunshine. You can also go for a walk along the promenade or have a go at water sports, such as stand-up paddle boarding. The pier, dating back to 1823, is full of charm with its colourful fairground rides, games arcades and food stalls.

ROYAL TREASURESThe Royal Pavilion is a top visitor attraction, and an instantly recognisable symbol of Brighton. The original building was transformed in the 1820s by George IV, to become the exotic Indian palace we see today. You can go on a tour of the Pavilion to discover its flamboyant interiors, with gilded dragons, carved palmed trees and imitation bamboo staircases.

L I VELY LANESThe Lanes are home to countless independent cafés, restaurants and shops, selling everything from unique jewellery and modern art to musical instruments and quirky antiques. You will be spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out – try traditional afternoon tea at the Blackbird Tea Rooms, delicious Italian ice-cream at Boho Gelato or bangers and mash in a traditional British pub.

FAMOUS FEST I VALSCreativity is celebrated in Brighton throughout the year with colourful art, comedy, music, film and food festivals. Each May the city comes alive with music, theatre, dance, circus, art, film and literature performances as part of the Brighton Festival – the biggest arts festival in England.

PERFECT LOCAT IONOur campus benefits from a unique location – we’re surrounded by beautiful and peaceful countryside, yet we’re nine minutes by train from the lively city of Brighton. If you want to explore the rest of the UK, central London is within an hour of Brighton and Gatwick Airport is just 30 minutes away by train.

EVERYTH ING YOU NEEDIf you don’t like leaving the campus, at Sussex you won’t have to. You’ll find everything you need to live and study comfortably here, from modern classrooms and labs to cozy coffee shops, bars and restaurants. There’s also a supermarket, launderette, bank, bookshop, dentist, pharmacy, health centre and a whole range of sports and fitness facilities.

HERE TO HELPWe know that living and studying away from home can be challenging at times, which is why our student support staff at the International Study Centre are here to help. Whether you need advice about your course or you simply need to talk, we’ll be on hand to support you so that you can enjoy your Sussex student experience to the full.

SUPPORT NETWORKThe University of Sussex has excellent support services, such as the Student Life Centre where you can get advice and guidance on issues such as accommodation, fees, disabilities, mental health and learning needs. Friendly and experienced support staff also run groups and workshops to help you with university life.

HEALTH SERV ICESThere’s also a dentist, pharmacy and a health centre on campus, if you ever feel ill or need help with a health issue. You’ll also have access to a drop-in centre in central Brighton where you can get medical treatment.

PLACES OF WORSH IPSussex supports students from a range of different cultures and backgrounds. The Meeting House is the on-campus chaplaincy that hosts services for a range of faiths and religions, including the Jewish community. There’s also a Muslim Student Centre and Muslim prayer facility.

STUDENT INSURANCEWhile studying in the UK you will need to have personal insurance. Study Care is an insurance policy that covers you for loss of personal possessions. IMPROVE YOUR ENGL ISHIf you do not meet the English language requirements to study the International Foundation Year, International Year One, or Pre-Masters, you can improve your level of English by studying an English language course taught at the International Study Centre (ISC).

ENGL ISH LANGUAGE PREPARAT ION ( E LP )This one or two-semester course is designed for students who want to study the International Foundation Year or the International Year One course. The ELP course is taken before you start your academic studies at the ISC.

ENTRY REQU IREMENTS International Foundation Year If you have IELTS 4.0 (with 4.0 in all skills) or equivalent, you need to study one semester of ELP. If you have IELTS 3.5 (with 3.5 in all skills) or equivalent, you need to study two semesters of ELP.

International Year OneIf you have IELTS 5.0 or equivalent you need to study one semester of ELP. If you have IELTS 4.5 or equivalent, you need to study two semesters of ELP.

ENGL ISH FOR PRE -MASTERS ( EPM)This one or two-semester course is designed for students who want to study a Pre-Masters course. This course is taken before you start your academic studies at the ISC.

STAGE 2 : AT THE I SCAs part of your course at the ISC you will get an opportunity to develop key employability skills, such as leadership and organisation, that can easily be transferred to a professional working environment.

You will develop the skills to write a CV and a personal statement that will make you stand out from the crowd, and you will be able to improve your presentation and interview skills too.

We will also work with you in the classroom, small groups and on an individual basis, to build your personal career development plan – a unique set of assignments that are relevant to your chosen career.

STAGE 3 : A F TER YOU PROGRES S TO YOUR DEGREEDuring your degree studies at Sussex you will complete the assignments set out in your personal career development plan.
