Summary
Smart Grid lightens Smart City, and Smart City makes life better.
International Symposium on Smart Grid for Smart City was
successfully held.
On November 20, 2017, the International Symposium on Smart Grid for Smart City was
organized by the Department of Electrical Engineering in School of Automation from
Guangdong University of Technology. The venue was in the Guangzhou National Integrated
Circuit Design Industrialization Center from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. The International
Symposium was opened by the Vice President of the International Activities of Guangdong
University of Technology, Professor Zhang Li. The Symposium Chair was 1000-talent
Programme of China, IEEE Fellow Professor Loi Lei Lai. The attendees consisted of invited
speakers & guests, government officials, decision makers, industrialists, academics,
researchers and postgraduates. The symposium was presided by Christine Tao. Professor
Zhang Li gave the welcome address of the Symposium too.
With the theme on "Towards a smart, clean, efficient and sustainable future" and
technical domain covers system Integration; intelligence & data analytics; management &
control; sensors & IoT and communication & security, this symposium aims to provide an
international forum for researchers and practitioners to report the latest innovations and the
state-of-the-art, and to share ideas in all aspects of smart grid, smart cities, emerging
technologies and data engineering & sciences. The symposium invited speakers were from
China, the United States, Australia and the United Kingdom. This event is an important
international event that promotes the development of the industry, enhance academic
exchanges and promotes the rapid development of smart grid smart cities. The co-sponsors
included DRPT International Inc., 1000-talent programme Data Centre, Shenzhen Clou
Electronics Co. Ltd., and Guangzhou National Integrated Circuit Design Industrialization
Center for Modern Service Industry. Technical Co-sponsors included IEEE Smart Grid and IEEE
Smart Cities. The support was from IEEE SMC Technical Committee on Intelligent Power and
Energy Systems, IEEE Beijing (Guangzhou) Section and IEEE PES Student Branch Chapter
(Guangdong University of Technology)
Academician of Chinese Academy of Engineering, Honorary President of State Grid
Electric Power Research Institute, Professor Yusheng Xue gave a report entitled Cyber-
Physical-Social systems in energy for Smart City, and after the report, Professor Yusheng Xue
discussed the future development trend with the delegates, and made lots of valuable
suggestions. IEEE Fellow, Changjiang Scholar, from North Carolina State University, USA,
Professor Mo-Yuen Chow delivered his talk titled Collaborative distributed control on smart
micro-grid energy management, which was inspiring. After the morning tea break, IEEE Fellow,
Distinguished Expert, 1000-talent Programme of China, SHaRP Professor from University of
New South Wales in Australia, Professor Joe Zhaoyang Dong gave a report entitled Experience
and lesion learned from demonstration project in Smart Grid for Smart City in Australia. After
lunch, IEEE Fellow, the Member of US National Academy of Engineering, Bodine Chair
Professor, from Illinois Institute of Technology, USA, Professor Mohammad Shahidehpour
talked about Smart Cities for promoting global sustainability. Follow to this, Distinguished
Expert, 1000-talent Programme of China, Deputy Chief Engineer of Electric Power Research
Institute in China Southern Power Grid, China, Dr Xuzhu Dong gave a report entitled
Demonstration of Smart Distribution self-healing control for Smart City at China Southern
Power Grid. After the afternoon tea break, Power System Laboratory Director of Hong Kong
Polytechnic University, Professor Zhao Xu shared with Emerging analytics for big data analysis
in Smart Grid. And Technical Expert and Group Leader in Ford Motor Company, Michigan,
USA, Dr Jianbo Lu gave a report entitled Smart mobility: The inevitable contributor of Smart
Cities. Finally, IEEE Smart Cities Publications Committee Secretary at the University of Oxford,
Chun Sing Lai brought us the speech about Data analytics and energy economics – Solar PV
and electrical energy storage, and made a lot of valuable suggestions in the Q&A time. At
6:30 p.m., the International Symposium on Smart Grid for Smart City had come to a successful
conclusion.
This symposium offered the delegates lots of opportunities and gains; they all believe
that these speeches have broadened their thinking as well as making them keep up with the
pace and directions of international mainstream research.
