E-mail or Electronic Mail
It is the most popular way to communicate
on the internet and is usually the first
internet application new users learn.
The Benefit of email
• E-mails personal & professional lives
• Keep in touch teachers via mailing lists and
discussion groups
• Target Language stimuli
• Communicate with our learners outside the
classroom (setting, receiving, marking and
returning homework /written assignments)
• Useful information and Communication Technology
(ICT) tools
ADVANTAGES
• Reading and writing emails in or outside class time
exposure to the target language
• The interaction is real.
• Make contact and interact with people from different
first language country and from other cultures.
• Skills acquired in participating in one activity
enhance a student’s ability to engage in others.
• The technology is relative simple to use
• It is easy to teach and is ubiquitous and free
COMMUNICATION SKILLS - NETIQUETTE RULES:
Not using only capital letters .
Being sure to respect others opinions.
Avoiding “flaming” –ongoing arguments which become
increasingly personalized and possibly public.
Files sent as email attachments may not be too large.
Advantage draft and edit before sending. -Fast
Netiquette = etiquette governing communication on the Internet

USING EMAILS WITH LEARNERS DURING CLASS

Requires learners to send emails to real
companies, individuals organization or
websites to solicit information

and a presentation or written report is

Data Collection Project:
Language courses in Australia
Theme: Language learning, study abroad, travel, culture
Aim: To collate information about English courses in Australia
Learners: Adults/teenagers learners intermediate and higher level
Suggested time frame:
5 lesson of 1 hour
Procedure
Lesson 1 a.-The teacher provides pairs of learners with one language school website in Australiab.-Pairs visit the website, read the information available, find an email address for further enquiries and compile a series of question to email to the school about the language courses on offer. (accommodation-transport-local sight- attractions)
Lesson 1 c.- Pairs write an email which can then be checked by another pair and/or the teacher, and send it to the language school
d.- Once all the pairs have received the answers to their enquiries, the learners are regrouped to share what they have found out.
e.-Follow up activities might include a spoken presentation on each language course to the class or a written report
USING EMAIL WITH LEARNERS OUT OF CLASS
Submit class work as attachments by email marked and returned by email
Send a summary of class work + homework / extra material
Send regular newsletters about the class Learners can use email to prepare before
class (role-plays--exposition-presentation) A class mailing list can be set up for general
discussion out of class time
