The Summer Undergraduate Internship in Non-proliferation Studies at the James Martin Cen-ter for Nonproliferation Studies (CNS) at the Middlebury Institute of International Stud-ies at Monterey (MIIS) is a paid internship. Interns will be compensated at the same rate as graduate research assistants and will work with CNS staff members on substantive issues for one of the following Nonproliferation Programs:

Eurasia

East Asia

Chemical and Biological Weapons

International Organizations and Non-proliferation

CNS's research interests also cover open source tools for nonproliferation, weapons of mass destruction (WMD) terrorism, export con-trols, and regional nonproliferation issues in-cluding the Middle East and South Asia. In addition to assigned research work, interns may develop their own research projects under the guidance of CNS staff. As part of the train-

ing aspect of the internship program, interns attend seminars and lectures held at CNS throughout the sum-mer. Interns may also have an opportunity to present re-sults of their independent research as appropriate at the

end of the program. The duration of the internship should be two to three months between early June and late August.

Requirements:

It is preferred that at the time of acceptance, appli-cants should at least be in their sophomore year of studies at an undergraduate institution

Is eligible to work in the United States

Has a strong interest in nonproliferation issues

Is knowledgeable of international security top-ics (desirable)

Has command of a foreign language (desirable)

Majors in the physical or biological sciences are also encouraged to apply.

Since 1997, CNS has offered a summer internship for un-dergraduate students. Interns at CNS have come from a wide variety of majors, including Biology, International Rela-tions, East Asian Studies and Peace Studies, and from colleges and universities throughout the U.S., including Brown University, Dartmouth College, Stanford University, Claremont McKenna College, Colby College, Carleton Col-lege, the University of Michigan, Columbia University, Cor-nell University, Middlebury College, Occidental College, Pomona College, Princeton University, Harvard University the University of Georgia, Georgetown University, Massa-chusetts Institute of Technology, Yale University, Emory University, the University of Pennsylvania, UC Berkeley, and UC Davis.
