1 Interview with Mr. Joe Di Clemente, Director of Integrated Communications Joe Di Clemente is the director of Integrated Communications. His department is responsible for marketing, media relations, box office, information, social media and design. Mr. Di Clemente started at Harbourfront Centre as a summer job. He had just graduated from art school and was planning to return to Italy in the fall to be a painter. When the summer ended, he was asked to stay on. Mr. Di Clemente accepted the offer and never left. After 30 years, Mr. Di Clemente has not lost interest or passion for his work at Harbourfront Centre. He enjoys the creative challenge and the variety of tasks, as well as the collaboration with his staff and the quality of innovation of the programmes. The liveliness of the site keeps everyone energized. One of the biggest changes Mr. Di Clemente has seen over 30 years was when Harbourfront Centre went from a Crown corporation to a not-for-profit arts centre. The physical site has changed dramatically and continues to do so. It has evolved from a series of warehouses to a jewel on the lakeshore. Volunteers help the Integrated Communications department in a variety of ways: they work at the information centre, distribute print material and gather media clippings. Some volunteers have signed on as designers to build experience for school programmes. Volunteers are a vital force in all facets of the Integrated Communications department and will continue to be. Thank you very much, Mr. Di Clemente, for giving the volunteer e-newsletter a bit of your time. We look forward to continuing our work with the Integrated Communications department in future. HarbourKIDS: Circus HarbourKIDS and Zero Gravity Circus presented the 11th annual Toronto International Circus Festival. Acrobats, clowns, magicians, puppeteers and other skilled performers converged on the HFC site for this free Victoria Day weekend festival. This year, the festival paid tribute to flight. Visitors were encouraged to learn real acrobatic skills either at the Natrel Tumble n’ Swing workshops or, for toddlers, in the Kindercirque area. Volunteers were kept very busy helping face painters and balloon artists in their popular tents. It was a wonderful weekend for everyone.

SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival From May 9 to 12, Harbourfront Centre hosted SING! The Toronto Vocal Arts Festival. It is Canada’s premier a cappella festival and is dedicated to celebrating Canadian and international vocal artists. Participants not only demonstrated that the voice knows no limits, but they also inspired and educated today’s youth while fostering a new and revitalized patronage for the vocal arts. Festival organizers brought together thousands of like-minded students, educators, enthusiasts, divas and “in-the-shower belters” to create a platform for some of the most innovative and exciting vocal presentations of music. Aaron Jensen was the artistic director.

Forest of Reading® Festival of Trees™ Forest of Reading® Festival of Trees™ is the largest children’s literary event in Canada. It returned to HFC this year with two days (May 15-16) of award ceremonies, fun workshops, author signings, and other exciting activities. The festival was presented by Authors at Harbourfront Centre in partnership with the Ontario Library Association. This children’s choice award programme welcomed more than 8,000 readers! The students on site were very enthusiastic about being at HFC and participating in the event. Many were back for a second or third time! It was a great event at which to volunteer!

Trivia Challenge In this issue of the volunteer e-newsletter, we want to see who has been paying attention! Here are some questions about the last issue of the e-newsletter (The April issue is here: http://www.harbourfrontcentre.com/images/volunteers/2013/vol_enews_2013apr.pdf). Good luck! 1. How many years has William Boyle worked at Harbourfront Centre? 2. How many hours did volunteers contribute at Harbourfront Centre in 2012? 3. Of the two volunteers profiled in the last issue, which one said: “It feels good to contribute towards a

more involved and vibrant city”?

Please submit your answers to: [email protected]

Harbourfront Mystery Spot Do you know the area around Harbourfront Centre?

There is so much forgotten history along the waterfront. This is just one of the sites that helps tie our history with that of another country. Can you name this location? The first person who can correctly identify the above mystery spot will have their name mentioned in the next issue of the newsletter. Good luck! Congratulations to Angie Rivers for correctly identifying February’s mystery spot as Shore Stories at Harbour Square Park!
