PLANNING FOR 2016 INT’L JAZZ DAY HAS BEGUN

International Jazz Day brings together communities, schools, artists, historians, academics, and jazz enthusiasts all over the world to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots, future and impact; raise awareness of the need for intercultural dialogue and mutual understanding; and reinforce international cooperation and communication. Each year on April 30, this international art form is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and human dignity; eradicating discrimination; promoting freedom of expression; fostering gender equality; and reinforcing the role of youth in enacting social change.

International Jazz Day is the culmination of Jazz Appreciation Month, which draws public attention to jazz and its extraordinary heritage throughout April. In December 2012, the United Nations General Assembly formally welcomed the decision by the UNESCO General Conference to proclaim April 30 as International Jazz Day. The United Nations and UNESCO now both recognize International Jazz Day on their official calendars.

What is International Jazz Day?In November 2011, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) officially designated April 30 as International Jazz Day in order to highlight jazz and its diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe. International Jazz Day is chaired and led by Irina Bokova, UNESCO Director General, and legendary jazz pianist and composer Herbie Hancock, who serves as a UNESCO Ambassador for Intercultural Dialogue and Chairman of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz. The Institute is the lead nonprofit organization charged with planning, promoting and producing this annual celebration.

Int’l Jazz 2015 In JapanHerbie Hancock leads stars playing in Japan for International Jazz Day as UK joins in the celebrations

Herbie Hancock, one of the star performers at the 2015 International Jazz Day on Thursday 30 April, says he is pleased the annual event is being held in Japan this year because of the country’s deep affection for jazz.

Hancock, 74, an American pianist, bandleader and composer, says he has performed more times in Japan than in his hometown of Chicago during his half century in music. He will headline an all-star concert at Osaka Castle Park, in a line-up that includes Wayne Shorter, Kenny Garrett, Terumasa Hino, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Gregory Porter, Roy Hargrove, Marcus Miller, Esperanza Spalding, Earl Klugh and John Scofield.

The concert will be streamed live on the Jazz Day website (11am GMT) and will also be shown in London on big screens at Ronnie Scott’s club in London

Hancock, a UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, says the event is an opportunity to show appreciation for Japanese jazz fans, who have been among the world’s greatest supporters of the music. He first performed in Japan with Miles Davis’ quintet in 1964, and has toured there with his own electric and acoustic groups for decades Esperanza Spalding will play at the special 2014 International Jazz Day concert

“Japanese audiences are very loyal,” Hancock told AP. “In Japan, art is really placed on a high level, and jazz is really honoured and accepted as being a fine music – much more in comparison to the States.”

Osaka played a leading role in the early days of jazz in Japan. During World War II, the government tried and failed to ban jazz, but the music flourished during the American occupation. There are more than 100 jazz clubs in the Tokyo area alone now.

Pianist-composer Toshiko Akiyoshi, who will be performing with her husband, saxophonist-flutist Lew Tabackin, at the Osaka concert, says: “I was introduced to jazz while playing in a dance hall as a teenager during the American occupation by a Japanese jazz fan and record collector. He played Teddy Wilson’s Sweet Lorraine, and I was hooked.”

UNESCO expect Jazz Day events to be held in all 196 member countries, in this the fourth year of the annual festival. In the UK, events range from record nights for fans to share jazz records, to concerts from Andy Sheppard and Kristian Borring.

Jazz has a diplomatic role of uniting people in all corners of the globe, according to the United Nations’ cultural organization (UNESCO).

Every year on 30 April, International Jazz Day brings together communities, artists, historians and jazz enthusiasts to celebrate and learn about jazz and its roots.

The musical genre is recognized for promoting peace, dialogue among cultures, diversity, and respect for human rights and dignity.

June 2015

Dear Doc Jones:

On behalf of UNESCO and the Thelonious  Monk Institute of Jazz, we thank you for helping to make the 2015 edition of International Jazz Day our most successful yet.

Due in part to your extraordinary efforts, this year’s celebration reached more communities than ever before, with partners from embassies and hotels to jazz clubs and cultural associations curating well over 700 individual events. These included concerts, jam sessions and showcases, but also many educational activities, aptly capitalizing on the ongoing observance of UNESCO’s 70th Anniversary celebration. The education and performance programs in the Global Host City of Paris, France were also a huge success. If you have not watched the All-Star Global Concert, filmed live at UNESCO Headquarters, we invite you to visit jazzday.com and have a look.

It is deeply inspiring to know that you and your fellow organizers have such passion for jazz and its positive message of peace and tolerance. International Jazz Day would simply not be the same without you.

If you haven’t already, please do let us know about your experiences on April 30. We welcome photos, videos and stories, as well as general comments and feedback, and anything else you might like to share. We would also love to hear about your plans for 2016. Be the first one from your state to confirm your participation for the 5th annual celebration!

Once again, thank you for all you do in support of this special day. We wish you a most happy and safe summer season.

Sincerely,

Herbie Hancock Tom Carter UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador President, Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz for Intercultural Dialogue Chairman, Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz
