I heard about a new system that’s supposed to help! I think it’s called

ALMIS.

Yep, but there’s a lot more to the story than just ALMIS!

Okay, Let’s start at the TOP!

ALMIS is part of a new comprehensive ...

WHAT is this WIS? What does it do?

How is it going to help us share data?

Well, I know the acronym now but….

Hold On ….

One question at a time! You may be confusing things by getting ahead of yourself.

Let’s start with the WHAT.

The WIS contains a DataBase called ALMIS that provides an opportunity for states to store their labor market

information in a single place. BUT… WIS is much bigger than a simple

DataBase.

What do you mean “WIS is bigger than just a DataBase”?! I

thought that’s all there was to it... a way for us to track our

information and share it with other states.

No, it’s much more than that. It’s the realization of a comprehensive

workforce information delivery system.

WIS isn’t a single program but a multifaceted system.

WIS is an interactive system that ties together various state and

national applications.

It is designed to help organize all the tools and data sources used by

employers, trainers and jobseekers.

So, you see, WIS isn’t just about jobs or people or labor force

statistics, it’s about ALL those things!

It’s a complex system containing

many different programs. The

ALMIS DataBase is just one part of

it.

Why do we need all these parts?

Well, jobseekers and employers share a common frustration in

finding reliable information about jobs, training opportunities and

workforce demographics.

WIS helps streamline and integrate the maze of programs that serve the employment and training needs of Americans.

The WIS serves as the information delivery infrastructure which

supports the One-Stop Career Center System mandated by the

Workforce Investment Act.

The WIS isn’t really all that hard to understand.

The ALMIS DataBase is constructed and operates a little

differently from other WIS programs.

Do we have to go through all the other things in the WIS system just to use the ALMIS DataBase?

Nope, use only what you need.

Well, my boss wants a way to share our workforce information data between our state and other states. That would be the ALMIS

DataBase, right?

RIGHT! The ALMIS DataBase is designed to do just that.

Right now we store our stuff in a single place on our own computers. How will ALMIS

be different?

Let me give you an illustration…..

units in your division.

Once each unit produces its data it goes into data files for storage.

Right.

All the information is stored in different places….. Maybe on individual PCs, maybe on a LAN system or somewhere in a mainframe computer.

Different units store their data on their own private data bases and then other users can’t easily access it without winding their

way through the maze to find it!

So how does the ALMIS DataBase help?

It provides a “central warehouse” for record storage in each state. It

also standardizes the record layouts so that they are the same from state to state to state. It can help break

down barriers so that all customers can easily reach the data they need.

The ALMIS DataBase acts as an organizing unit.

So the ALMIS DataBase is kind of like a giant organizer for workforce information!!

You could say that. It puts everything in its proper order. Then it puts everything in its

proper place. It makes it easier to find and share data.

Wah-hooo! That sounds great. My boss is going to love this! How do we get one of these?

The ALMIS DataBase isn’t exactly a product that you buy… it’s a system that each state will

build and maintain. The file layouts and structure have been

designed for you by a consortium of states.

It has already been distributed to the various states. They have

begun to populate the data fields.

ALMIS provides the file structures and the “warehouse”

layout so that it is the same from state to state. You still have to build and populate the system

yourself.

ALMIS isn’t an option

but rather a requirement.

All states will use the same file structure.

ALMIS lets you stop trying to push over the brick wall ...

… and lets you build a city instead!

The ALMIS DataBase will be a vital part of implementation of the Workforce Investment

Act.
