IntroductIon

The National Arts Council (NAC) believes that the arts are an integral part of all Singaporeans’ lives and exposure should begin from a young age. NAC hopes that children can enjoy the benefits of learning in and through the arts. As such, NAC is committed to helping all pre-schoolers have access to quality arts education for expression, learning and reflection.

We all have fond memories of our first experiences with a piece of crayon or a favourite piece of music, and we believe that the arts are some of the best ways to nurture creativity in a child’s development; as children are naturally drawn to visuals, rhythms and movements. The programmes in this booklet are a database of 46 Arts Education Programmes (AEP) targeted specifically at pre-school children (Kindergarten 1 and 2, ages 5 and 6) as part of a larger suite of engagement strategies being piloted for this sector.

With this database of arts programmes, which is specially curated by NAC and representatives from the arts and early childhood sectors, pre-schoolers can now enjoy quality arts activities led by professional artists and arts educators with the relevant qualifications and experiences in delivering programmes for children.

Programmes accepted under this pilot span across 5 different art forms (Dance, Music, Theatre, Visual Arts and Literary Arts) and consist of 3 programme categories:

Arts ExposureChildren are introduced to a particular art form. Programmes are 30 to 40 minutes in duration and presented as performances. Each programme is accompanied by an explanation on the background and development of the art form or a talk-cum demonstration segment.

Arts Experience Programmes provide children with hands-on participation in the various art forms and are suitable for small groups of children. Programmes are interactive and encourage children’s enjoyment of the art form. Programmes typically last from 3 to 10 sessions.

Arts ExcursionProgrammes allow children to attend performances at purpose-built arts venues and visit museums, galleries, art centres, artists’ studios and theatres.

These programmes have been endorsed from July 2014 to March 2016. Programmes accepted under the Pre-School AEP will be reviewed every 2 years to ensure relevance and alignment to the curriculum framework for kindergartens in Singapore.

Early childhood educators are encouraged to purchase these endorsed arts programmes for children by contacting the arts provider directly. Please direct any questions or feedback to the NAC Arts Education team at [email protected].

The information contained in this booklet has been provided to NAC by the respective artists/arts groups who own the copyright of the programmes. This booklet must not be reproduced, copied, imitated, wholly or in part, or used in any way without the prior permission of the NAC.

“Where is my cat? Here’s my dog” is a tale of a little girl’s encounter with an abandoned dog. In this dance theatre, children experience theatre and dance movement in a story telling format. Children will also be exposed to 4 different styles of dance, namely ballet, contemporary, percussion dance and creative movement. The dance theatre also encourages compassion for animals, bringing awareness and reinforcement against “animal cruelty” and responsibility of pet ownership to the young generation.

My World Of Dance! introduces children to Hip Hop and Jazz dance style where dance is a magical art form, a form of non-verbal communication and storytelling. There is more than one way to dance, to tell a story, to express oneself. Children will view performances of different mood and pace, discover the use of body in dance, and explore rhythm and tempo.

Performances include:• Performers dressed like Dr Suess who will present a fast paced,

energetic hip hop dance performance that incorporates humour in movement

• A slow, soft, lyrical and imaginative jazz dance of the butterflies in which dancers don beautiful costumes and the dance is presented in the most magical and entertaining way

• Stepping is a form of percussive dance in which the participant’s entire body is used as an instrument to produce complex rhythms and sounds through a mixture of footsteps and hand claps Children are introduced to the use of props for dance through the sticks/canes that the dancers include during the step dance

• Good Bye Dance for Everybody. A fun goodbye song and dance for children to sing and move to a beat

‘Creative Rhythmic Body is specially tailored to young children (age 5–6). It targets developing their motion skills and rhythm/musicality, and creativity.

The programme focuses on 2 primary areas of dance: rhythm and creative movement. This programme employs props and musical percussions (ribbons, tambourines, and maracas) to engage the young students, which is an effective way to direct their focus as students this age generally have limited attention span.

The programme will also incorporate a series of ‘play and interactive games’ to ensure learning is engaging and fun, as this will encourage students to be more participative, and partake in the creative process.

outline of progrAmme

The Children’s Theatre Circle aims to provide children with a heightened experience of drama, the literary arts and of course, lots of fun! The children in the programme will go through a highly interactive and integrated arts experience, exploring and discovering the 4 art disciplines – dance/movements, music, theatre and visual arts.

The children will be introduced to the important elements of theatre arts. They will explore pantomime, mask theatre, improvisation, role/character dramatization and puppetry in theatre while they act, sing, dance and learn to create. They will also take on different r oles and inject their own ideas, exercise their voices creatively and confidently and work on building the script, characters, emotions and moods to enhance language skills and expressions.

TLC uses the “process approach” to develop performance skills in young children. We encourage children to progress at their own pace and enjoy the journey in a naturalistic manner. It is important to understand that using “process drama” in our lessons is not necessarily a performance-based method. The advantages of process drama is that it allows children to practice life and social skills, builds perspective-taking skills, understand characters in the story and relate certain situations to their own experiences. It is a very personable approach to teaching theatre arts and a method we, at TLC, find it to be most appropriate when working with preschool-aged children.
