Page 2: Introduction to Genesis part II

The creation of Man is given in more details in chap 2 compared to chap 1

Chap 1

27 So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;  male and female he created them.

Chap 2

7 Then the LORD God formed a man from the dust of the ground and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life, and the man became a living being.

21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

An important question …. Is Man special or is he just another animal?

Why is this question important?

Morality. Value of life.

Relationship with God

Relationship with each other

Page 4: Introduction to Genesis part II

What is special about Man in creation?

We bear the image of God

We have BOTH a Spirit and a Body

o Gen 2:7 “… and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life.”

o “neshamah” - breathe, spirit of man (Prov 20:27) “ruach” - Spirit of God or spirit of man

Rom 8:16 – Spirit of God and spirit of Man

Angels – Spirit Animals – Body (Hebrews 1:14) (1 Corinth 15:35-39)

Gen 1:27

So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them;  male and female he created them.

Created in God’s Image – How so?

Man = Body + Spirit + Soul (Heb 4:12)

In God’s Image?NO

God is Spirit. We are created in his spiritual image.

God = Spirit ( John 4:24)

Genesis 2 : 20,21But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

Do men have 1 less rib than women? Ans : No. Each has 12 pairs …… usually

Woman Man

Genesis 2 : 20,21But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

God did not make Eve and walked away!

It is a relation that God initiated

Genesis 2 : 20,21But for Adam no suitable helper was found. 21 So the LORD God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep; and while he was sleeping, he took one of the man’s ribs and then closed up the place with flesh. 22 Then the LORD God made a woman from the rib he had taken out of the man, and he brought her to the man.

1 Corinthians 11 7 A man ought not to cover his head, since he is the image and glory of God; but woman is the glory of man. 8 For man did not come from woman, but woman from man; 9 neither was man created for woman, but woman for man. 10 It is for this reason that a woman ought to have authority over her own head, because of the angels. 11 Nevertheless, in the Lord woman is not independent of man, nor is man independent of woman. 12 For as woman came from man, so also man is born of woman. But everything comes from God.

PRECEDENCE First born - set apart and belongs to the Lord (Num 3:11-13) - given back to parents and substituted by Levites (Num 3:45) Precedence = pre-eminence? Col 1:18

Pre-eminence • Appointed authority (Rom 13:1) • assigned role & RESPONSIBILITIES!!

INTERDEPENDENCE The superior is dependent on the subordinate and vice versa

- both with assigned roles and neither will be successful

without the other.

KJV ..”separate”

God’s mandates for mankind including “be fruitful and multiply” cannot be fulfilled unless this interdependence is played out

Page 12: Introduction to Genesis part II

There are ALWAYS consequences when the order of things put together by God is circumvented and the authorities He has established is usurped and degraded

When the above happens in context of interactions between man and woman, man will be alone – NOT good!
