Project title: Production and commercialization of long products of stainless steel and alloy steels.

Cuban part: Business Group of the Iron and Steel Mechanical Industry. (GESIME).

General description of the project: Creation of manufacturing capacities for long products of stainless steel and alloy steel, up to a nominal capacity of 180,000 tons per year, through the modernization and acquisition of equipment at the ACINOX Las Tunas steelworks company and the installation of a new rolling mill, in order to meet the domestic market demand and to promote exports.

Investment modality: Joint Venture

Proposition of contributions by the foreign part: Funding Know how. Technology transfer. Training of the Cuban technical force in the use of new technologies. Technological equipment. Foreign market.

Foreseen microlocalization: Empresa Aceros Inoxidables de Las Tunas (Stainless Steel Company of Las Tunas, trade name: ACINOX Las Tunas).

General market (demand): The production will be destined to cover the national demand and exports, anticipating that 97% of the production will be destined to the external market.

Proposed technology: The technology that was installed in the ACINOX Las Tunas company for the manufacture of stainless steel and special steels is based on a DUPLEX Process, which is made up of an electric arc furnace and a VOD (vacuum decarburization equipment) for the refinement of steel. Currently, the main producers of stainless and special steels use the TRIPLEX Process, which is made up of electric arc furnace, AOD (oxygen converter to remove large amounts of carbon) and VOD. This project proposes to replace the currently in use DUPLEX Process with the TRIPLEX Process: to add a new converter to the process. In addition, the project provides the assembly of a new rolling mill for long products, as well as the updating and modernization of the equipment currently in use.
