EDITION 11, 7 JULY 2017 Dear Families, Staff and Friends of Cardijn FROM THE PRINCIPAL NAIDOC WEEK The last week of this term was focused on celebrating NAIDOC Week. It was a week that celebrated the history, culture and achievements of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC is not only celebrated in Indigenous communities but by Australians from all walks of life. NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islanders Day of Observance Committee. The 2017 theme - Our Languages Matter, aims to emphasise and celebrate the unique and essential role that Indigenous languages play in cultural identity, linking people to their land and water and in the transmission of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, spirituality and rites, through story and song. Some 250 distinct Indigenous language groups covered the continent at first (significant) European contact in the late eighteenth century. Most of these languages would have had several dialects, so that the total number of named varieties would have run to many hundreds. Today about 120 of those languages are still spoken and many are at risk of being lost as Elders pass on. Australian Business Week The Year 10 students were very busy with Australian Business Week. This year the program involved manufacturing of sporting goods. Teams of 12 students were put through a very challenging and demanding five days of a business simulation, team work, decision making, production of materials and development of a trade display, company written and oral reports and a video commercial. Ms Susan Watt, a team of senior school teachers and ESO staff were the driving force behind this endeavour and we extend our grateful thanks to Susan for her fantastic organisation and leadership of the program and congratulations to all Year 10 students. Around the College This week has also seen our Year 11 students on Work Experience and our Year 12 students completing their mid-year exams. Our reports for Year 8 and 9 will be distributed on Friday 7 July with Year 10 -12 reports distributed at the end of week 1, next term. Congratulations to many students involved in so many endeavours in sport, drama and music. I am particularly looking forward to the Year 12 production, My Sister Violet early next term. Communications at the College Cardijn Newsletter and our online presence using social media and our website has been a discussion at the College for the last 12 months. Cardijn College is very excited to increase and streamline our information and sharing of news using a range of different media such as Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Principal’s Blog and LinkedIn. We know that there is an increasing desire to have access to more than printed media, to include short video. We believe we can create a more dynamic and exciting connection with families and the community through our new approach. As such we are trialing this next term with the introduction of more items on Facebook, sharing our events in a more immediate and purposeful way, the use of a Principal’s Blog on our website, to engage the community in what is happening at the school other than events (matters about our Catholic faith, learning, pastoral care, policy and administration), Instagram where you will see more about the school and have access to short video clips, including a tour of the school, SMS and email regarding immediate information about school matters, reminders for events at school and TWO newsletters a term with each having a specific focus. In August, it is a focus on pathways to University, Training, Marcellin Technical and TAFE and our 2018 subjects selection process. Our September issue will be focussed on Pastoral Care and Transition with a special focus on our 2019 Year 7 transition. At Cardijn, we are keen to have our families and extended community engaged in what is happening in the rich life of Cardijn. JOSEPH CARDIJN MASS MONDAY 24 JULY St Francis Xavier's Cathedral

FROM THE PRINCIPALStaff NewsAt the end of this term we sadly say goodbye to a dedicated and talented staff member, Saraya Kennewell. Saraya was employed at Cardijn in early 2007 as a Graphic Designer and Marketing Officer. She was instrumental in the development and publication of our marketing materials, but more importantly the work into our branding.

Saraya has also managed much of the “Cardijn Book” project which is still in its early stage of production. Saraya is an outstanding event manager, coordinating the 2009 National Joseph Cardijn Conference which was held at Cardijn College. We are going to miss Saraya very much, apart from her many skills and talents, she is a wonderful

colleague, amazing energy, ideas and always supportive of her colleagues. We wish Saraya well as she takes on a new challenge as the Marketing Officer at Mary MacKillop College.

MARIST CENTRE NEWS

Special Olympics Basketball CarnivalStudents from the Marist Centre participated in the Special Olympics school Basketball Carnival at Pasadena High School in June. After several practice sessions provided by our coaches, Heath Anderson and Zack Bennett, the team felt more confident in their basketball expertise.

All students displayed fantastic ball skills and team- work on the day. Cardijn competed against 8 schools in a “round robin” competition. Our team was undefeated on the day with every player contributing to the overall success. There was even several 3 pointers scored!

VISUAL ARTS NEWSThe Visual Arts department has had a busy term with excursions and community art projects on the go! Senior classes visited the SACE Year 12 Art Show, attended the Year 12 Visual Arts forum and the Art Gallery of SA to broaden their understanding of both contemporary and traditional art. Sophie Horseman (12 Chisholm) reflected on her day:

“The excursion to the SACE Art Show and the Art Gallery of South Australia was an amazing trip for me. It was wonderful to see all the different types of artworks people my age had created and see the standard which we had to be meeting. I observed the different techniques artists had used and read through their folios for inspiration. It was a very informative experience. The art gallery was even better. I had never been before, so I was experiencing all the art for the first time. It was amazing to see all the beautiful types of art that had been collected from all different places and time periods. The experience helped me to gather references and inspiration, and further my understanding of what is expected of me.”

We currently have an exhibition at the Catholic Education Office showcasing work by our staff from a wide variety of faculty areas. Staff created the artworks during a Faith Formation session that focused on our spiritual

connection to our environment. The artworks are wonderfully creative, exposing some hidden talents! Next term is the students turn to exhibit at the CEO, with a selection of outstanding portraits making their way there in the next few weeks. The collection of drawings, paintings, prints, photos, and even embroidery, will be on display for Term 3.

Lastly, we are excited to have two community art projects under way at present. We have been working in conjunction with St Luke’s Church, the Religious Education faculty and local artist Connie Giacoumis to design a public art piece that will feature in the car park adjoining the church and the school. It has been a great opportunity to deepen our understanding of our faith through looking at the connections between our College community and the parishes of the local area.

The second community project we have been working on has been a collaboration with Service Learning at the College. A group of volunteer students have been working with local artist Richard Lavender to produce a mural for the Noarlunga Railway station, as part of the DPTI Rail Care initiative. The mural depicts aspects of the local Onkaparinga environment; installation of the mural will occur in the near future. The wonderful students who have been involved are Abby Jackson, Ari McGregor, Amber Leaney, Alyssa Lynch, Reuben Azevedo, Jade Tanucan, Brad Baldago, Julia Woodcock and Emily Richardson – they have all done a fantastic job of bringing the mural to life!

Hello, Music family and friends!

Your Music Captains are back to tell you what’s been going on in music. The Catholic Schools Music Festival auditions were held a little over a week ago. Our ensembles gave their best on the day. All of the ensemble directors were very happy with their performance and fingers crossed we look forward to hearing good news about successful auditions in the near future. Recently we also we had our Music Instrumental and Junior Ensemble Night. This was an opportunity for all students to put their name down and perform in front of their family and friends. We had lots of students put their hand up to do a solo on the night and it turned out to be a great success. The ensembles that performed that night (Concert Band, Percussion Ensemble, String Ensemble and our Year 8 Advanced Music class) did an amazing job and they were a joy to watch and listen to. Our SACE 2 ensemble students have worked very hard to complete their ensemble moderation for the first semester. This is where they have to perform in their senior ensemble and then part test (perform a section of their own part solo) to show they actually know their part. They all did extremely well and they all should be proud! Coming up next term is our Music Night! This is happening on Thursday in Week 3 of next term and we are all looking forward to it! All of our ensembles will be performing on the night including some Year 12 solo acts. We are also having our feeder school join us to do a performance which is very exciting. Make sure you come down and share an wonderful night with all of us!

Year 10 Science and Engineering ChallengeOn Wednesday of Week 8 a gifted group of Year 10 scientists competed in the regional Science and Engineering Challenge at Flinders University. Each group of three demonstrated excellent teamwork as they carried out challenging and extremely tricky activities, such as ‘Confounding Communications’, ‘Helter Skelter’, and ‘Mission to Mars’. At the end of the day all students watched the participants from each school test a model bridge. Cardijn bravely stepped up first, and our team of Caleb Woodhall, Nick Zadow and Jordan Payne managed to come second. It was a magnificent effort from all of our students and overall Cardijn College came an impressive third. A massive thank you to the following students who demonstrated superb resilience and commitment.

FROM THE COUNSELLORS

Over the past few weeks our Year 11 Business and Enterprise students have been learning about entrepreneurs. As part of their study, the students have researched famous entrepreneurs such as Bill Gates and Steve Jobs, whilst also spending time identifying the skills and qualities of a successful business owner. Last week, our students were fortunate to have a guest speaker for one of our lessons, Keith Clements. Keith is an electrician, who has started his own business in the last year. Keith spoke about the challenges he has faced in establishing his own business, but also highlighted some of the advantages to being your own boss. It was great to see our students so eagerly engaged in his presentation, and it provided a great learning experience to see that not all entrepreneurs are billionaires. We thank Keith for taking time out of his busy schedule to speak with our class.
