There were lots of trains running and everyone had a good time. It was still kinda ruff running those little trains, even though they were long. I thought Bob had water trouble and I figured his trains would swell to their normal size (HO)! But they didn't? Bob made a lot of changes and did more scenery work. Bob made alot of things even better. I want to thank Bob and Gail for the great they served. And everyone who brought something. Especially Bobby Ginter for that great FATTENING peanut butter fudge! He had to know that I wouldn't stop at ONE p e i c e . I also want to mention that we (the division) are losing a good member and great host for our March meetings. Destination America: The Alaska

Railroad

Written by William C. Vantuono, Editor-in-Chief

The television network “Destination America,” which is part

of the Discovery Communications group of networks (TLC,

Animal Planet, etc.), will be premiering a new series,

“Railroad Alaska,” on Saturday, Nov. 16.

Destination America describes the series:

“Following an elite crew of workers—brakemen, engineers,

construction crews, mechanics and train drivers—Railroad

Alaska illustrates the battle against ferocious weather and

treacherous terrain to keep the State of Alaska’s critical 500-

mile long railroad rolling to deliver life sustaining supplies.

From controlled avalanches to prevent catastrophe, to fasci-

nating characters like Jim James, the one-handed handy man,

learn what it takes to keep this train on track.”

For a full schedule (each episode will be aired multiples

times) and video clips from each episode:

access Railroad Alaska’s website.

Twas the night before Christmas

and all thru the house

Not a creature was stirring

Except Galon's pet mouse

Galon was tucked in his bed sleeping sound

Dreaming of trains going round and round

All of a sudden

A little round man did appear

Sitting side saddle on a broke back deer

Landing atop Galon's shingled roof

It was Little Billy & his Elf "Poof"

Billy grabbed his sack

and the chimney he found

The chimney was skinny and he is round

He huffed and he farted

Not sure he could finish

What he just started

He found Galon's cars

All nice and pristine

I'll Anti Rock them all

He got a head of steam

The crispies and details

They fell just like snow

Billy said to himself

Galon will never know

Billy grabbed his sack

up the chimney he flew

Off to Bob's and Al's

and that mean Gary too

I'll slide down their pipe

I ain't talking tripe

Anti Rockin's my game

And Billy's my name.

Merry Christmas?

A CHRISTMAS TALE BY

HONEST AMOS

Answer to last month's puzzle:

philadelphia and erie railroad company

That's now the B&P line, Johnsonburg to Erie and

the branch Ridgway to St Marys.

NS owns the part from Emporium to Sunbury, op-

erates east of Driftwood itself, leases the Driftwood

to Emporium piece to WNY&P.

This month's puzzle:

7 words

AAAAA CCC DDD EEEE FFF II J LLL M

NNNNN OOOO P RRR S Y

Clues:

It wasn't a railroad company, but there were cars

lettered with its name. Two of the words in the

name are the names of counties in the Allegheny

Plateau Division.

The Short Line: Modeling Tips by Jeff Damerst I think it is time for me to share some of the things I have learned that might help you in your modeling and garden railroading. This will be a monthly feature and I will accept any tips anyone has to offer as we are in this together.

What to Do When You have Duplicate Trains Numbered the Same

Find an old typewriter eraser that architects and draftsman used back before the computer really arrived on the scene that looks like a white pencil with a solid core eraser and where a pencil eraser would normally be, there are blue or green bristles used to wipe away residue. You might find these erasers at your Tax accountant or a small local print-

ing shop or a friend that works in a factory as a draftsman. Otherwise you can try one of those school erasers that is gray on one side and white on the other. The eraser I use has not been made since 1999. You will also need an old rag. I like old dishcloths that are rough. I also use Walther’s Solvaset decal softening solution which comes with a tiny brush in the bottle cap. This is used as the medium to help erase the painted ink used to letter the trains. Please note a regular eraser will not work in large scale, but will work in HO and N scales.

Place a drop of Solvaset on the number you wish to remove. GENTLY ERASE THE NUMBER and take your TIME. I am getting a customer’s well used NYC GP7 ready to be repainted into the original B & O paint scheme, so I will show you how I erase lettering and numbers.

The original number boards are painted in a way most folks wouldn’t expect. The company first pad prints the number in white on the clear plastic, then the black is printed on top with a clear number, and finally the number is again reprinted. This makes the number stand out. The tendency is to just erase the numbers to the white plastic and quit. But you have to go to solid clear plastic or a hidden number will show up. When one erases, DO NOT DO IT FORCILY. Do it GENTLE and take your TIME. If you push too hard on the number board, the glue will loosen and the number board will be inside the body shell which means you will have to

take out about 20 screws including the fuel tank on a GP7/9 to get the shell apart . Then you will be able to reglue the number board back in place. The pictures above show the original number board before erasing and the one on the right shows a partial erasure and the tall pic-ture shows one partially erased.

The picture on the left shows me erasing the cab number as in this case I was just cleaning up what I missed last night. The picture on the right shows the right number board erased down to clear plastic. When both number boards are erased, one should be able to hold the unit up to the light and see through to the opposite number board. I will decal the number board first with a solid white decal followed by a black decal with clear numbers and the number will show through. My Alps and most Alps can’t print black well on white ink. The Alps by the way use a resin ribbon.

Don’t try to make a decal with your ink jet or laser printer unless you are applying it to a light color piece. Laser decals will work while ink jet decals will dissolve in water, but a laser yellow decal will not show up on a dark engine as color decals have to been underplayed with white to make them opaque. The Alps printer is the only printer in the world that can do this and they went out of production in 2007. The chances of you finding one on E-bay that really works is rare. The printers will also not work with Vista, Win 7, or Win 8 as drivers were last written for Windows XP.

To renumber a car, one must chose which number to erase. In the case of my ERIE 2 bay hoppers, I will most likely erase both the farthest right number on 5 of the cars and on the other 4, I will erase the number 2

nd to the right.

The catch is matching the right size and height number decal to be in line with the other numbers. The other option is to remove all the numbers after noting the number series and just dropping a new number decal in place, which is the easiest. ERASE GENTLY or you will have gray spot as you will have removed the paint too.

This picture shows the GP7 ready for paint. I did remove the entire coupler mechanism from each end after the picture was taken. The unit will be airbrushed first into Poly Scale SP LIGHT gray which hides everything and allows the paint to stick better. The gray section top of the unit will be painted with my airbrush using Poly Scale CSX gray. Using a hair drier, I will dry and cure the paint. Then in an hour or 2, I will mask all the gray areas. Then the black stripe will be painted in place and after it is dry (5-10 minutes using a hair drier), I will mask off the black stripe. Last I will paint the unit with Poly Scale B & O Royal Blue. Then when dry I will unmask the tape ( always pull tape toward yourself at a 45 degree angle and PULL SLOWLY ! ). With care, if all goes well, there will be no runs down the cracks. Then the unit is ready for decaling, which I will print the sheet up on my Alps 5500 Micro Dry printer. The yel-low stripes, lettering, and logos will be done with decals. But before you can apply them, you need to clear coat the piece. I find Testors Glosscote #1261 works best.

As you erase the letting or numbers, you use the rag to wipe away the residue. It helps to have several old rags as they do get dirty. You might wish to wear rubber gloves while doing the process.

Meeting minutes, Allegheny Plateau Division, Division 11,

NMRA, November 10, 2013, held at Bob McKay’s at

Treasure Lake. Meeting was started with a clinic by Bob

McKay on information on our members layout(s)/projects

that we have at home, by all members present.

The meeting was called to order by our Superintendent

Rolly Miller at 14:09 with reports of officers. Treasurer:

$29.00 cash on hand with all else remaining the same.

There were no bills presented. Bob noted that the banquet

will be December 7 at Hoss’s in DuBois at 12:00 p.m. and

that the January meeting will be at Gary’s.

The minutes were approved as written in the newsletter by

a motion by Howdy and a second by Galon. Rolly ac-

knowledged Bob and Gail for hosting the meeting today.

Paul’s mother in law has passed away. Gary reported on

the Corsica Fire Hall train show upcoming in December

with set up on the first of December at 2:00 p.m. Make and

Take Scenery modules are available that were left over

from the Jamboree, and blue box kits can be utilized as

well. The dates and times for the train show are in the

newsletter.

New Business: There was discussion of 501C3 status.

There was discussion on the Jamboree and nothing will be

known till after the first of the year. Some blue box cars are

available for our use at the Christmas and the jamboree.

Committees: Rolly suggested that Paul find a possible train

trip for this next summer. Editor: Bill needs information for

the newsletter as soon as possible for publishing prior to the

Christmas dinner on the 7th of December. Bob reported on

possible new members as listed by National…. A host for

the March meeting will be needed. Webmaster: Bob –

keeping updated and correct…. Build and Bring for the

banquet December is anything that has the word “box” in it.

50-50 won by Alan.

Good of the order: The Brown’s layout in Clearfield now

going to a club in Altoona, and there will be a train show in

Clearfield Wednesday through Saturday morning, and Ni-

agara Frontier home layout tours on the 17th of November.

Adjourn: Alan 2nd Galon

Respectfully submitted: Steve Waltman, Chief Clerk

The Friar brought up a few interesting subjects this last

meeting. Since I am on a tight schedule I will allot my

space to have him expand on programs he was unable to

explain during the meet, due to the time spent cataloging

the various members efforts at modeling or plans for the

future. OK boB:

Thanks Bill,

I enjoyed every minute of our meet here in Tresure

Lake. Gail and I thank you, as both of us had a wonder-

ful experience and enjoy our friendships.

It has been several years since we have published a divi-

sion directory or model railroad information pamphlet.

My hope is to produce something with color photos, and

stories of why you model your present layout, and how

you model your vision. The input from the circle ses-

sion before the meeting gave me a good start.

We need to update our Division Promo Flyer. What

would you like to see included?

Lastly, I want to drop a bomb shell of a suggestion, and

do a feasibility study of a Regional Convention HERE

in 2019. We now have a venue—the new hotel & con-

vention complex behind Walmart. I’d like to see a com-

mittee formed to look at this. But first, need to finish

my work for this summer’s nationl in Cleveland.
