The human rights treaty bodies are committees of independent expertsthat monitor implementation of the core international human rights

treaties. Each State party to a treaty has an obligation to take steps toensure that everyone in the State can enjoy the rights set out in the

treaty.

There are ten human rights treaty bodies composed of independentexperts of recognized competence in human rights, who are nominated

and elected for fixed renewable terms of four years by State parties

it is obviously important that UN human rights instruments be assessed as to theirimpact on promoting and protecting the human rights of individuals who are thenationals of contracting parties.

Accordingly a number of mechanisms have been introduced in anattempt to monitor compliance with each human rights treaty. The maininternational human rights treaties have established special committees whichhave been specically entrusted with the task of supervising the way countries

abide by their treaty obligations. These treaty bodies, of which there are currentlynine, have been created pursuant to the relevant UN human rights treaties, asfollows:
