Year of the Pond
Construction of the Iowa LICA pond started on July 13, 2015. Contractors working on
this project were: Gene Blazek, Doug Egeland, Mark Erpelding, and Dan Vorwald.
Each of these contractors hauled in their own machines and brought along some of their
men to install the pipe and core trench for the pond. They started around 10 AM on
Monday, July 13 and completed the majority of the pipe installation and core trench by
8 PM on Wednesday, July 15.
Equipment included: haul trucks, excavators,
dozers, backhoes, compactors, and shovels.
The work began with stripping the topsoil off
the sight and the borrow area.
Once the core trench reached the flow line of
the pipes, the pipes were installed.
The haul trucks were loaded with clay which
was then placed on the core trench.
Two pipes were installed. A 72” and a 24”.
The 24” was installed in the control structure.
The 72” pipe is the overflow pipe. The pipes
were backfilled with sand.
3
The sand was then compacted and after reach-
ing a certain level, clay soil was added.
The excavator is carefully adding clay to cover
the pipes in the core trench.
The men are working to make sure pipe is
compacted properly before clay is added.
Make no mistake, this is a “big one”. Our
pond has a 1000 acre watershed.
We knew the pond wouldn’t be completed this year so we installed
a pipe through the dam so the water from the creek could continue
to flow. Below a 24” plastic tube was installed. The pipe was cov-
ered and the water was allowed to flow through the dam. This pipe
will be removed when the pond excavation is completed during the
next field days.

With the core trench and pipes installed, the 2015 Midwest Construction Expo and Field Day can begin. Our associate members came through again. Dozers, excavators, backhoes, scrapers, haul trucks, tiling machines, backfillers, 25 booth displays, and other demonstrations were brought to the field day. Weather played a big role on this field day. With over 5 inches of rain coming the day before the event was to take place, it made for a lot of changes. As your executive director, I had spent several hours planning this event and making sure I had associates located in areas so they could best display their ma-chines and supplies. The weather threw all that plan-ning out the window. We were now doing what we could to get things done.
I can’t thank all the LICA volunteers enough for pulling this event off. I know I will miss some of those who helped. Tim Rasmussen and Tim Recker were out front making decisions on how to get machinery dis-played and off the trucks. They pretty much took over getting things where they could. Russ Peters was in charge of machinery unloading and getting them where they belonged. He worked with Merle Gronewold putting up fence and signs. When the show was over, Merle took down all the fences, took care of the trash, and got all trash cans back to the building. Doug Egeland helped with all the construction. and after he saw the mess I had at the last field day with all the plowed in trenches, he brought his tractor with ditch filler to get everything straighten out after the field day.
Mark Erpelding was in charge of the pond project. That is not easy. We have all kinds of contractors coming to field days. Some come just to run a machine and see what it can do and others come to help get a project done.
Victor Gingerich brought the whole Gingerich team to the field day to man the tractors with the carts to move people around the farm to the various activities.
Dan and Jake Vorwald do what they do best. They get on the dozers and got the site straightened out so it can be seeded. The most welcomed contractor who showed up just at the right time was Mike Needham. Mike has always told me that if I ever needed anything - give him a call. Well, I
didn’t call him but he sure showed up at the right time. Usually we clean the machines with a fire pumper truck late Thursday afternoon. The fire truck broke down! Friday morning the only people left to clean out all the machines were Tim Rasmussen, Russ Peters, and myself. There was no way we were going to get this job done. We knew the Hawkeye students were going to show up sometime but didn’t know when. Mike Needham stopped by and started helping. Then he said he would bring his portable washer down to get the cleaning done a lot better. He got the washer going and showed Merle Gronewold where to fill it up in Melbourne.
My brother, Tim, took over the washing job. About 9 o’clock; 14 Hawkeye students came walking across the dam and offered their help. What a life saver! With the help of Hawkeye students the entire cleaning job was done by noon.

Other LICA members who helped were: Kevin Hemeseth, Larry Vias, Glen Gronewald, Bruce Barnhart, Worthin Grattan,Tim Wahlert, Ricken Tiling, Nancy’s Blanket, and I am sure I have left out someone.
So many others helped with this year’s expo.
Bruce Mosier, Prins Insurance,
Inc., took over directing traffic.
Our State President Dave
Flewelling and Vice President,
Scott Bohle helped with in-
stalling pipes and core trench
and also took time to help dur-
ing the
As always, Mary Ann Evison took over the
registration desk with the help of Deb Tjaden
and Maretta Grattan.
Associate Members who came through with last minute donations:
Titan Machinery arranged to have the tractors brought in from the Grundy Center Farm Store. We needed
those tractors for the carts to get people moved around the farm. Also, thanks to Darren Brown for clean up help.
Alan Kruska, FRATCO, donated 160 feet of 24” pipe with one day notice so we could get the core trench fin-
ished.
Ziegler Cat donated the use of the Cat D6N equipped with Accugrade GPS to help construct the core trench
before the field day.
Northern Iowa Construction Products came through with a piece of 24” steel pipe at a moments
notice to keep the project going.
Star Equipment, LTD donated use of power tools.

Hawkeye Community College brought
their training trailer to the expo. The
climate controlled trailer holds ma-
chine simulators. Contractors spent
hours in the trailer checking out their
skills as machine operators. This
learning tool was a great addition to
the Midwest Construction Expo.
Mitchell Bohle (above) tries out the
simulator. Below—a more mature
operator, Leonard Drish checks out his
skills.

Visitors to the Midwest Construction Expo and Field Day
Even though the weather tried to put a damper on the Expo, over 500 peo-
ple attended the two day event. Among those visitors were Nordis Es-
trem, Region IV VP, and Gerald Biuso Sr., CEO of National LICA. Pic-
tured at the left, I don’t think either of them realized the size of Iowa corn.
Below, State Representative Pat Grassley, stopped by to see the equip-
ment and other displays. He was very impressed with all the conservation
projects on the LICA farm designed to keep our water clean. Representa-
tive Grassley is the Chairman Iowa House Ag Committee.

Upcoming Meetings
Bruce Barnhart, past National LICA President and Chairman of the Board, met with representatives
of Hertz Farm Management at the Iowa LICA farm on August 5. The representatives of Hertz were
looking at different ways they could advise their clients on the use of permanent conservation projects
to reduce the amount of nutrients in our water. Representatives from IDALS, NRCS, and Agribusi-
ness Association of Iowa were also in attendance.

Iowa DOT— “What’s wrong
with this load securement” One of the many highlights at this
year’s expo was the presentation
from officers of the Iowa Depart-
ment of transportation. LICA
members Dan Vorwald and Tim
Rasmussen had a trailer loaded
with a dozer. It was up to mem-
bers to find out what was wrong
with the load and the tractor trailer.
Winners of the “What’s wrong with this load securement” contest are:
Brett Reiter – Raymond
Jake Bagley – Ackley
Each one won a $50 prize.
Linda Moyna of Moyson Resources was responsible for setting up
this presentation.
